Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Success factors in switching to open source software
No full textThe task of the Master Thesis is to find and analyse success factors in order to help companies in switching to OSS. During operating period companies use various software. Due to rapidly growth of open source as well as its demand many companies make decision to switch from commercial software to open source. However, both big and small-sized organisations often do not know how to conduct the switching in a proper way, how to choose from the beginning an appropriate open source software and many other aspects. Due to lack of information companies have plenty of doubts regarding moving to open source. In this case they need recommendations and advices that can help them to choose right open source software to succeed with it in future. In order to solve these problems, reasonable recommendations will be proposed in a guideline as the final result of the Master Thesis. The guideline is created in form of tables with a textual description of the aspect, importance and approach for each success factor. It contains basic recommendations in order to switch to OSS properly. The Master Thesis’s goals were achieved by using such scientific methods as literature analysis and systematic review of factors in switching OSS. Literature analysis included reviewing of different scientific sources, aimed at finding scientific works, researches and case studies regarding issues in switching to OSS. Systematic review of factors in switching to OSS consists of detailed analysis of research questions of this work, thus was focused on uncovering results of the found scientific researches, and on deeper analysis of them, which allowed the further proceeding to the final results of the work. Having conducted the research and analysed the collected results, important factors were sorted out and examined in view of their most influencing aspects in switching process to OSS. The concluding part includes creation of the success factors guideline comprised of received results throughout the whole work. The guideline is represented as a set of tables, which comprises of brief description of success factors in switching to OSS. Additionally, the importance of those factors as well as recommendations and advices on how to switch to OSS properly is also encapsulated in the tables.Die Aufgabe der Master Thesis besteht darin, Erfolgsfaktoren zu finden und zu analysieren, um Unternehmen bei der Umstellung auf OSS zu helfen. Während der Betriebszeit verwenden Unternehmen verschiedene Software. Wegen des rapiden Wachstums von Open Source sowie deren Nachfrage entscheiden sich viele Unternehmen, von kommerzieller Software auf Open Source zu wechseln. Allerdings wissen sowohl große als auch kleine Unternehmen oft nicht, wie man die Umstellung sachgemäß durchführt, wie man von Anfang an eine geeignete Open Source Software wählt, und viele andere Aspekte. Aufgrund des Mangels an Information haben Unternehmen viele Zweifel bezüglich der Umstellung auf Open Source. In diesem Fall benötigen sie Empfehlungen und Ratschläge, die ihnen helfen können die richtige Open-Source-Software wählen, um mit ihr in Zukunft erfolgreich sein. Um diese Probleme zu lösen, werden sinnvolle Empfehlungen in einer Richtlinie im Schlussergebnis der Masterarbeit vorgeschlagen. Die Richtlinie wird in Form von Tabellen mit einer Textbeschreibung des Aspekts, der Bedeutung und des Ansatzes für jeden Erfolgsfaktor erstellt. Die Richtlinie enthält grundlegende Empfehlungen, um auf OSS ordnungsgemäß umzuschalten. Die Ziele der Masterarbeit wurden durch die Anwendung von solchen wissenschaftlichen Methoden wie Literaturanalyse und Systematische Übersichtsarbeit von Faktoren bei der OSS-Umstellung erreicht. Die Literaturanalyse umfasste die Überprüfung verschiedener wissenschaftlicher Quellen wie wissenschaftliche Arbeiten, Forschungen und Fallstudien zu Fragen der OSS-Umstellung. Die systematische Überprüfung der Faktoren bei der OSSUmstellung beim Umstieg auf OSS besteht aus einer detaillierten Analyse der Forschungsfragen dieser Arbeit und konzentrierte sich daher auf die Aufdeckung der Ergebnisse der gefundenen wissenschaftlichen Forschungen und auf eine tiefere Analyse von ihnen, die das weitere Fortschreiten der endgültigen Ergebnisse ermöglichten die Arbeit. Nach Durchführung der Untersuchung und der Analyse der Ergebnisse wurden häufigen Faktoren in Anbetracht ihrer am meisten beeinflussenden Aspekte des Schaltprozesses zu OSS aussortiert und untersucht. Das abschließende Teil enthaltet die Erstellung der Erfolgsfaktorenrichtlinie, die aus den erhaltenen Ergebnissen während der gesamten Arbeit besteht. Die Richtlinie wird als Tabellen dargestellt, die aus einer kurzen Beschreibung der Erfolgsfaktoren der häufigen Faktoren bei der Umstellung auf OSS besteht.
