The role of E plus A and post-starburst galaxies - I. Models and model results
Different compositions of galaxy types in the field in comparison to galaxy clusters as described by the morphology-density relation in the local universe are interpreted as a result of transformation processes from late- to early-type galaxies. This interpretation is supported by the Butcher-Oemler effect. We investigate E+A galaxies as an intermediate state between late-type galaxies in low-density environments and early-type galaxies in high-density environment to constrain the possible transformation processes. For this purpose, we model a grid of post-starburst galaxies by inducing a burst and/or a halting of star formation on the normal evolution of spiral galaxies with our galaxy evolution code galev. From our models, we find that the common E+A criteria exclude a significant number of post-starburst galaxies, and propose that comparing their spectral energy distributions leads to a more sufficient method to investigate post-starburst galaxies. We predict that a higher number of E+A galaxies in the early universe cannot be ascribed solely to a higher number of starburst, but is a result of a lower metallicity and a higher burst strength due to more gas content of the galaxies in the early universe. We find that even galaxies with a normal evolution without a starburst have an H delta-strong phase at early galaxy ages
The role of E plus A and post-starburst galaxies - II. Spectral energy distributions and comparison with observations
In a previous paper, we have shown that the classical definition of E+A galaxies excludes a significant number of post-starburst galaxies. We suggested that analysing broad-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is a more comprehensive method to select and distinguish post-starburst galaxies than the classical definition of measuring equivalent widths of (H delta) and [O ii] lines. In this paper, we will carefully investigate this new method and evaluate it by comparing our model grid of post-starburst galaxies to observed E+A galaxies from the MORPHS catalogue. In the first part, we investigate the UV-optical-NIR (near-infrared) SEDs of a large variety in terms of progenitor galaxies, burst strengths and time-scales of post-starburst models and compare them to undisturbed spiral, S0 and E galaxies as well as to galaxies in their starburst phase. In the second part, we compare our post-starburst models with the observed E+A galaxies in terms of Lick indices, luminosities and colours. We then use the new method of comparing the model SEDs with SEDs of the observed E+A galaxies. We find that the post-starburst models can be distinguished from undisturbed spiral, S0 and E galaxies and galaxies in their starburst phase on the basis of their SEDs. It is even possible to distinguish most of the different post-starbursts by their SEDs. From the comparison with observations, we find that all observed E+A galaxies from the MORPHS catalogue can be matched by our models. However, only models with short decline time-scales for the star formation rate are possible scenarios for the observed E+A galaxies in agreement with our results from the first paper
New active galactic nuclei detected in ROSAT all sky survey galaxies - II. The complete dataset
Aims. The ROSAT ALL Sky Survey Bright Source Catalogue (RASS-BSC) has been
correlated with the Catalogue of
Principal Galaxies (PGC) to identify new extragalactic counterparts.
550 reliable optical counterparts have been detected. However there existed
no optical spectra for about 200 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) candidates
before the
ROSAT ALL Sky Survey (RASS) was completed.
Methods. We took optical spectra of 176 X-ray candidates and companions at ESO, Calar Alto observatory and McDonald observatory. When necessary we used
a line profile decomposition to measure line fluxes, widths and centers to
classify their type of activity.
Results. We discuss the redshift-,
linewidth-, as well as optical and
X-ray luminosity distribution of our ROSAT selected sample.
139 galaxies of our 166 X-ray counterparts
have been
identified as AGN with 93 being Seyfert 1 galaxies (61%).
Eighteen of them (20%) are
Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies.
34 X-ray candidates (21%) are LINERs and only eight candidates (5%) are Seyfert 2. The ratio of the number of Seyfert 1 galaxies
to Seyfert 2 galaxies is about 11/1. Optical surveys result in ratios
of 1/1.4. The high fraction of detected Seyfert 1 galaxies is explained by
the sensitivity of the ROSAT to soft X-rays which are heavily
absorbed in type 2 AGN.
Two X-ray candidates are HII-galaxies and 25 candidates
(15%) show no signs of spectral activity. The AGN in our RASS selected sample
exhibit
slightly higher optical luminosities
(MB = (-20.71 ± 1.75) mag) and
similar X-ray luminosities
(log( [ erg s-1] ) = 42.9 ± 1.7)
compared to other AGN surveys. The Hα line width distribution (FWHM)
of our newly identified ROSAT AGN sample is similar to the line widths
distribution based on SDSS AGN.
However, our newly identified RASS AGN have rather
reddish colors explaining why they have not been detected
before in ultraviolet or blue excess surveys
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
