Behaviour of RC Beams with non-bonded flexural reinforcement:A numerical experiment
The present work is concerned with a numerical investigation of the behaviour of reinforcedconcrete beams with non-bonded flexural tension reinforcement. The numerically-established behaviour of such beams with and without transverse reinforcement is compared with its counterpart of similar beams with bonded reinforcement. From the comparison, it is found that the development of bond anywhere within the shear span inevitably leads to inclined cracking which is the cause of 'shear' failure. On the other hand, the lack of bond within the shear span of the beams is found, not only to prevent cracking within the shear span, but, also, to lead to a flexural type of failure preceded by the formation of horizontal splitting of concrete in the compressive zone. It is also found that delaying the extension of horizontal splitting through the provision of transverse reinforcement in the beam mid span can lead to flexural failure after yielding of the tension reinforcement. Yielding of the tension reinforcement before the horizontal splitting of the compressive zone may also be achieved by reducing the amount of the latter reinforcement.</p
Shear failure criterion for RC T-beams
The paper is concerned with the development of a failure criterion capable of accurately predicting the shear capacity of reinforced concrete T-beams while correctly accounting for the beneficial effect of the increase of the compressive zone due to the presence of flanges. The development of the subject criterion is based on an alternative design method (the compressive force path method) that leads to predictions of reinforced concrete structural behaviour and design solutions considerably different compared to those of the current design codes without however compromising structural performance requirements (mainly associated with ductility and strength). The validity of the proposed failure criterion is verified through a comparative study of the calculated values with their experimentally-established counterparts obtained from an extensive literature survey. Through this comparative study it is demonstrated that the predictions of the proposed criterion provide a closer fit to the available experimental data than their counterparts obtained from the design codes considered
Assessment of design methods for punching through numerical experiments
The work is intended to demonstrate that the loss of bond between concrete and flexural steel which led in recent years a number of flat-slab structures to punching collapse under service loading conditions is also relevant to ultimate limit-state design. It is based on a comparative study of the results obtained from numerical experiments on flat slab-column sub-assemblages. The slabs were designed for punching either in compliance with the EC2 code requirements, which do not allow for such loss of bond, or in accordance with the compressive force-path method which considers the loss of bond between concrete and the flexural reinforcement in tension as the primary cause of punching. The numerical experiments are carried out through the use of a nonlinear finite element analysis package for which, although ample published evidence of its validity exists, additional proof of its suitability for the purposes of the present work is presented.</p

Behaviour of reinforced concrete beam-molumn joints under cyclic loading
The main scope of this thesis is the development of a new method for the seismic design of external beam-column joints by considering that the load transferred from the linear elements to the joint is predominantly resisted by a diagonal strut mechanism. For this purpose two test series are carried out on full-size beam column joint sub-assemblages which are subjected to cyclic loading. The first test series is concerned with the investigation of the validity of the current code provisions for the earthquake design of RC external beam-column joints; from the results obtained, it became clear that there is an urgent need for the development of a new method for the earthquake-resistance design of RC external beam-column joints. The second test series investigates the validity of the proposed method, with further evidence for the verification of the proposed design method being obtained from a comparative study of the method’s predictions with already published experimental information on the behaviour of a wide range of exterior beam-column joints sub-assemblanges under cyclic loadinΓρηγορία Μ. Application of strut-and-tie models for assessing RC half-joints not complying with current code specifications
The work described is concerned with an investigation of the effectiveness of the use of strut-and-tie models for the structural assessment of half joints. Such elements form a part of many existing bridges which, although not complying with current code specifications, have not as yet displayed any significant signs of distress in spite of the increase in traffic volume and loads over the years. The work is based on a comparative study of the predicted and experimentally established values of load-carrying capacity and location and causes of failure of half-jointed beams with reinforcement layouts that replicate those found in structures designed in accordance with previous code specifications. The results obtained show significant shortcomings of the assessment method as this is found not only to underestimate load-carrying capacity by a margin ranging between 40 % and 65 %, but also to often fail to identify the location and causes of failure. Therefore, there is a need for an alternative assessment method that will be based on concepts capable of both providing a realistic description of structural-concrete behaviour and identifying the causes of failure leading to the loss of load-carrying capacity
Assessment of RC exterior beam-column Joints based on artificial neural networks and other methods
A database on the behaviour of reinforced concrete external beam-column joint sub-assemblages established from the results of over 150 tests is developed and used for the development, training and validation of an artificial neural network (ANN) based model. The ANN model predictions on the mode of failure and load-carrying capacity of the joints, together with the predictions of widely used code methods and those of a recently proposed method, which does not require calibration through the use of test data, are compared with their counterparts stored in the database developed herein. The comparison confirms the already reported shortcomings of current code methods and demonstrates that both ANN model and the recently proposed method can provide reliable alternatives to the code methods
