    Absence-Presence: Kos

    No full text
An exhibition that coincides with the BBC News' World on the the Move' day. This show narrates the story of Kos refugees and the work of Kos-Solidarity through spectral artefacts and images. The Summer of 2015 witnessed the man migration of people seeking refuge, safety and security in Europe. Over 1 million people, including 250,00 children made the perilous sea crossing to the Greek islands of Lesvos, Chios, Leros, Samos and Kos. At its peak, the island of Kos was receiving 200-500 new arrivals each day. With no official reception facilities in place at the time, Kos-Solidarity, with the support of donators, volunteers and groups such as Flying-Help, HulpKaravaan Naar Greenland, Jetzt and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Ireland, provided much needed frontline aid, food and clothing. In February 2016, Kos-Solidarity was nominated along with 16 other Greek volunteer groups for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of their humanitarian work. Since October 2016, Dr David Swann has been collaborating with Kos-Solidarity. A planned trip to advance a project unexpectedly coincided with the date that the EU/Turkey agreement came into force. This game-changing event, that turned refugee reception into rejection was the catalyst for Absence-Presence: Kos. Keywords: Refugee, Migrant, Kos-Solidarity, Artefact

We derive several implications of incentive compatibility in general (i.e., not necessarily quasilinear) environments. Building on Kos and Messner (2013), we provide a (partial) characterization of incentive compatible mechanisms

Tourist development impacts on the spatial transformation of the Greek islands. The case study of Kos insular area

The paper context is dealing with the changes in the spatial structure, within small island areas of Greece, caused by the rabbit tourist development of the last thirty years. In the early seventies, tourism was a new direction for the island rural communities and economies, having a complicated and multileveled spatial organization, knowing that it involves effectively: 'international', 'national', 'territorial' and 'local' level, over the island space, which was mostly believed as a 'closed' system ('closed' local society, local economy etc). In these terms tourism has become today the main factor of regional and local growth, affecting to: the evolution and agglomeration of the population, the function of the local labour market and the distribution of labour, land uses and the location of services and central activities, the role of small towns and settlements and their 'connectivity' level with 'autonomous' (how much?) tourist areas. We examine -as a case study- the above matters in a 'fully' tourist developed area of the greek islands space: Kos and Nisyros spatial unity, located in South Aegean (totally about 30,000 resident population and 32,000 hotel beds in 2000). Our research was based in empirical/ qualitative information but also in secondary/ quantitative data, comparatively presented. At the beginning we attempt to build a 'scenario' describing the process of the development. We detect the development phases by checking the spread sequence of the tourist units (and activities) compared with the existing spatial structure of the island/ rural case study area ('how'). At the same time we try to explain and connect this process with the changes within the local economy, the local community and the basic 'rules' of the land market ('why'). This 'scenario' is used as a framework for (the) following specific investigations referring to: -the differentiated evolution of the population in each island town/ settlement, due to a number of reasons related directly to the agglomeration of the tourist activities, -the changes in the location and the categories of labour and its increasing mobility, as a result of the special characteristics of tourism, -the role of the transportations and the spatial forms of the retail sector in a tourist environment, -the functional relations and the networking between a tourist area and a small town/ rural settlement, investigating whether the tourist areas are functionally embodied with the surrounding settlements. Finally the paper comes to some schematic types of spatial relations according to the size of each settlement and the spatial relations it develops in general. These spatial types contain the main conclusions of the above analysis and they describe how the area is transformed and reshaped under the changing developing procedures.

Zaradi množične razširjenosti fotografije v sodobnem svetu, jo lahko podjetje izkoristi za prvi stik s potencialnimi kupci in za lastno promocijo. Vendar vsaka fotografija v poplavi vizualnih dražljajev ne doseže zastavljenega cilja enako učinkovito, kajti upoštevati moramo njen namen in dojemanje, dovršeno kompozicijo in tehnično kakovost. V diplomski nalogi smo preučili razširjenost fotografije in njen pomen v družbi. Due to mass diversification of photography in a contemporary world any company may use it for their first interaction with their potential customers and for their own promotion. However, in the flood of visual stimulations not every photography reaches its goal with equal effect, because we must take into consederation its puprose, its perfect composition and technical quality. In this diploma paper we studied a diversification of a photography and its meaning in the society. We focused on the advertising and on the photography as an element of communication on the market. To explain the thesis of the diploma paper we had to explore the psychological aspect of perception - with an element of acquiring attention and the role of the colors. Apart from this, we also researched and studied the design and the correct composition of the photography, which is one of the more important elements of quality in a photography. The last part of the diploma paper presents an example of Mizarstvo Kos company, which uses all of the above in theory and practice, and uses photography to present and promote its craft
