Hydrodynamic interaction between coaxially rising bubbles in elasto-visco-plastic materials: Bubbles with a wide range of relative sizes
We consider the buoyancy-driven rise and interaction between two gravity-aligned bubbles of wide radii ratio and constant volume in an elasto-visco-plastic (EVP) material, extending our previous work on equal bubbles [Kordalis et al., Phys. Rev. Fluids 8, 083301, (2023)]. Primarily we consider a 0.1% aqueous Carbopol solution and model it with the Saramito-Herschel-Bulkley model. Initially, we investigate the dynamics for a specific initial separation distance in a wide range of bubble radii and we determine the conditions leading to three distinct patterns: bubble approach, bubble separation and establishment of a constant distance between them. Specifically, when the leading bubble (LB) is smaller than the trailing bubble (TB), the bubbles approach each other due to the smaller buoyancy of the LB. Strong attraction also occurs when the ratio of buoyant over viscous force of both bubbles is considerable. On the other hand, when the size of the TB is such that this ratio is moderate or small, the pattern is dictated by the size of the LB: A significantly larger LB compared to the TB causes separation of the pair. On the contrary, an only slightly larger LB may result in the bubbles rising with the same terminal velocity establishing a constant distance between them, the magnitude of which is mainly determined by the elastic response of the surrounding medium. The coupling of a negative wake behind the LB with a slight modification of the stresses exerted at its rear pole generates this dynamic equilibrium. The same equilibrium may be achieved by other specific pairs of bubble sizes for different initial distances of the pair, if a critical initial distance is exceeded. Below this critical value, the bubbles approach each other. Finally, we construct maps of the three patterns with TB radius versus bubble radii ratio for different initial separation distances and material properties.36 pages, 18 figure

The role of transcatheter renal sympathetic denervation on target organ damage in patients with resistant hypertension
Objective: This study investigated the effect of renal denervation (RDN) on target organ damage (TOD), especially cardiac adaptations, in patients with resistant hypertension (RH). We also performed a systematic review and metaanalysis of the literature regarding RDN and regression of TOD. Methods: Cohort study: Eighteen patients with RH [age: 56±10 years, 12 men, BMI: 33.6±5.4 kg/m2, office blood pressure (BP): 182±19/97±18mmHg and ambulatory BP:153±16/87±15mmHg receiving 4.5 antihypertensive drugs/day and left ventricular hypertrophy underwent RDN. Metaanalysis: We searched literature for studies with eligible content and performed random-effect meta-analyses for the following outcomes: left ventricular mass index (LVMI), left atrial volume index (LAVI), E to A wave velocities of trans-mitral inflow (E/A) and E wave velocity to Em velocity from tissue Doppler imaging (E/Em), central augmentation index (AIx) and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV).Results: Cohort study: RDN contributed to regression of LVMI from 140.0±17.0 g/m2 (57.9±7.9 g/m2.7) to 126.7±19.2 g/m2 (52.6±8.4 g/m2.7) (P<0.01 for both) and left atrial diameter from 42.4±4.3 to 40.6±3.6mm (P=0.004) at 6 months. Mitral lateral E/E’ ratio decreased from 14.8±6.1 to 12.0±3.2 (P=0.016); isovolumic relaxation time shortened from 109.8±16.2 to 100.8±17.1 ms (P=0.003); and N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide levels reduced from 84.9±35.9 to 57.2±38.8 pg/ml (P<0.001) at 6 months post-RDN. At 24 months after RDN, the LVMI reduced significantly by 15.5% and the mitral lateral E/E’ by 29.7%. Meta-analysis: Seventeen studies (n=698 patients) were incorporated in the present meta-analysis. RDN led to a regression of LVMI by 14.17 g/m2 (95% CI -18.33 to -10.01, P<0.001) and by 4.75 g/m2 (95% CI -7.83 to -1.67, P=0.003) for echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance, respectively. The pooled effect of RDN to E/A was not significant [0.04 (95% CI -0.03 to 0.12, P=0.252)], whereas a decline of E/Em [-0.73 (95% CI -1.38 to -0.08, P=0.03)] was observed. The pooled effect to LAVI [-1.67 ml/m2 (95% CI -4.60 to 1.27, P=0.266)] reached statistical significance only in sensitivity analysis. RDN had beneficial effects in both AIx [-7.05 (95% CI -9.12 to -4.98, P<0.001)] and PWV [1.54 m/s (95% CI -2.16 to -0.92, P<0.001)]. Metaregression analysis revealed an independent effect of RDN on TOD regarding baseline blood pressure and blood pressure reduction. Conclusion: RDN contributes to the regression of TOD in patients with RH, independent of BP reduction.Σκοπός: Σε αυτή τη μελέτη διερευνήθηκε η επίδραση της νεφρικής απονεύρωσης (RDN) στις βλάβες στα όργανα στόχους (TOD), ειδικά τις καρδιακές προσαρμογές, σε ασθενείς με ανθεκτική υπέρταση (RH). Η RDN οδήγησε σε υποστροφή της LVMI κατά 14.17 g/m2 (95% CI -18.33 to -10.01, P<0.001) και κατά 4.75 g/m2 (95% CI -7.83 to -1.67, P=0.003) για την εκτίμηση με υπερηχοκαρδιογράφημα και με μαγνητική, αντίστοιχα.

Thesis (M.Eng.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2000.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 94-96).This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. This thesis investigates peak-to-average ratio (PAR) reduction techniques for multicarrier modulation systems, such as discrete multitone (DMT) modems and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) terrestrial broadcast transmitters. Through simulation and test implementation on a state-of-the-art programmable ADSL development platform, this thesis pursues a suitable solution for minimizing PAR given the resources of a programmable platform. This solution is integrated as a prototype implementation into a fully-functional ADSL modem and optimized for maximum PAR reduction performance within modem complexity constraints.by Athanasios Dimitri Dousis.M.Eng
Homophobic Statements, a Bishop, and the Limits of Freedom of Expression. An In-Depth Commentary on ECtHR 31.08.2023, Amvrosios-Athanasios Lenis v. Greece, no. 47833/20
Dichiarazioni omofobe, un vescovo e i limiti della libertà di espressione. Un commento approfondito su CEDU 31.08.2023, Amvrosios-Athanasios Lenis v. Greece, no. 47833/20.
ABSTRACT: The decision of the ECtHR of 31.08.2023, Amvrosios-Athanasios Lenis v. Greece (no. 47833/20), is a further step toward an increasingly dense jurisprudence on “hate speech” and the limits of freedom of expression. The public proclamation of religious doctrines that are in conflict with the values of the contracting States enshrined in the ECHR is protected to a certain extent by the fundamental right of freedom of religion and belief. However, the qualification of a statement as religious does not justify “hate speech.” The AUTHOR shows the tension between freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and protection against discrimination, and analyzes the decision against the backdrop of Article 17 of the ECHR (prohibition of abuse of rights).

La tomba III di Haghios Athanasios e il valore semantico dell'incarnato
The tomb III at Haghios Athanasios stands out among the Macedonian tombs for the exceptional painted decoration of the temple-like façade. Excavated in the '90s by M. Tsimbidou-Avloniti it has been published by the scholar in full detail and the iconographic program of the monument has been the object of many publications. This article re-examines the different ways of reproducing the skin color (το ανδρείκελον) in the figures of the miniature frieze and in the megalographic figures beside the door. The realistic rendering of the megalographic figures of armed men in Macedonian attire, showing their sorrow for the lost of an etairos, is contrasting with the pale color of the participants to the symposion in the frieze above the door, a scene whose illusionistic overtone has been yet perceived by the critics. This symposion is articulated in three scenes and it can be interpeted as a necrodeipnon, but in the same time as a celebration of the Macedonian banquet style, centered on the royal court. The author suggests that the first figure on the right of the frieze, related to the group of armed men looking towards the banqueters feasting in the center of the frieze, can be read as the dead himself, for the particular rendering of his ανδρείκελον, showing the typical ochròtes or necròdes face color, according to the contemporary medical lexicon. The pathetic stance assumed by the same figure, the sole in the group which is not bearing arms, seems to confirm his role in the context of the scene
Systemic immune inflammation index as a predictor for atrial fibrillation recurrence after catheter ablation
Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is a common arrhythmia with significant public health implications, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Catheter ablation (CA) is an established treatment for drug-resistant Afib, yet recurrence remains a major concern, impacting quality of life in a significant portion of patients. Inflammation plays a critical role in the recurrence of Afib after ablation, with systemic inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein being linked to higher recurrence rates. In this editorial, we discuss the study by Wang et al, published in the latest issue, which investigates the predictive role of the systemic immune inflammation index (SII) in Afib recurrence following radiofrequency CA. Elevated pre-ablation SII levels are identified as an independent predictor of recurrence, significantly enhancing the predictive power of the APPLE score. Integration of SII improved the APPLE score’s predictive performance, as shown by enhanced area under the curve, net reclassification improvement, and integrated discrimination improvement. This combined model highlights the importance of both structural and inflammatory factors in Afib recurrence, offering a more personalized approach to patient management. Additionally, the affordability and accessibility of SII enhance its practicality in clinical workflows. The study by Wang et al underscores the potential of integrating SII with existing scoring systems to refine risk stratification and optimize treatment strategies. Future research should validate these findings across diverse populations, explore limitations such as the potential influence of comorbidities on SII reliability, and investigate additional biomarkers to enhance predictive accuracy. ©The Author(s) 2025. Computational Modelling of Compaction in Asphaltic Mixtures and Geomaterials
Asphaltic mixtures are heterogeneous composite materials consisting of aggregates coated and bound by asphalt binder. The long term performance of asphaltic pavements is highly dependent on the mechanical behaviour of the asphaltic mixture during construction (mixing and compaction) and operation; inadequate mixture compaction leads to faster moisture and oxygen diffusion, ravelling, rutting and poor fatigue life
