On Folk and Linguistic Etymology of Selected Toponyms in the District of Tomaszów Lubelski
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono etymologię ludową i naukową kilku nazw miejscowych powiatu tomaszowskiego. Szczegółowej charakterystyce poddane zostały następujące toponimy: Lubycza Królewska, Korczmin; hydronimy: Huczwa, Wieprz, Tanew; oraz mikrotoponimy: Gołda i Zamczysko. Analiza semantyczno-strukturalna wykazała znaczne różnice między tzw. etymologią naiwną a badaniami stricte naukowymi. This paper discusses folk and linguistic etymology of selected toponyms in the district of Tomaszów Lubelski. In particular, the author focuses his analysis on the following place names: Lubycza Królewska, Korczmin; hydronyms: Huczwa, Wieprz, Tanew; and microtoponyms: Gołda and Zamczysko. The semantic and structural analysis of the names in question reveals considerable discrepancies between the so-called naive etymology and the linguistic etymological analyses
On the Toponymy of Roztocze
The author presents a semantic and structural analysis of several puzzling toponymies from the south-east Lublin region. They are the following names of villages: Teniatyska, Podrusów, and parts of villages and hamlets: Sikliwce, Rebizanty, Koszele. Probabilistic research, studies on their history and settlement, a reconstruction of the starting forms of toponymies have made the author to arrive at the following conclusions:
Teniatyska is a cultural name connected with the Ukrainian appelative teneta. Primarily, it most probably defined a place where traps or nets were laid. It cannot be excluded that such a place was a water mill of which mention has been made in the notes. Another interpretation allows for the starting form Teniatyn. Then the personal name would be included in the toponym Teniata (Pol. Tenięta). A change in the from of the toponym Teniatyn > Teniatyszcze would be linked with the establishment of a new settlement in place of the deserted one, once inhabited.
Podrusów refers to the topographic or water name Rusiec, one that is analogous to the names of the proximate settlements, cf. Susiec.
Sikliwce is an ethnic name, most probably primarily referring to a water environment - a near-by stream. With, the name would change its category from the category of ethnic names to the family ones. The process of anthroponimization had taken place in another local name of that area - i.e. Rebiznaty, primarily,
Koszele is a typical family name from the personal name Koszel, and the latter is derived from kosz (basket), “a vessel woven from straw and straw.
On the Issues of Onomastic Grammar and the Culture of Language – Łunia Street
This paper seeks to analyse the street Łunia from the historical and linguistic point of view. The author came up with several general conclusions: 1. The contemporary name of the street is derived from the personal name Łuń. 2. The patron of the lubycka street is Andrij Łuniw (Andrzej Łuniów). 3. The second component of the personal Ukrainian was inadequately transposed onto the Polish language.
The proper name of the street’s name in accord with the Polish language norm should read Łuniowa or else Łuniwa
On the Place Name Wierszczyca – a Town in the District of Tomaszów Lubelski
The paper contains a semantic and structural analysis of the place name Wierszczyca. Relying on the earliest records available, the author has proved that the primary form of the place name – Wierzchrzeczyca – was a hydronym that was structurally an endocentric compound made of wirzch > wierzch + rzeczyca. The variant Wierszczyca is a historical development, created through reduction (haplology) of the phonological sequence chrze, with the fricative rž > rsz retained before -czyca. Two later variants of the place name under discussion were: Werszczyca – with the syllable wer-, representing the Ukrainian syllable pattern; and Wereszczyca with the unmotivated sequence -ere-, potentially coined through analogy to the nearby place name of Wierzchrachanie > Werechanie, or otherwise created through wordplay on the Ukrainian names of the type weres, wereszczaty, etc
Some remarks on the microtoponymy in the 18th century region of Chełm
This paper presents selected issues related to the 18th century toponyms in the region of
Chełm. Manuscript sources report microtoponymic formations that display inconsistency in the implementation
of the then-contemporary standards of spelling and frequent alternations in the spelling
of the particular names. The causes need to be sought in language interferences, limited language
competence and the bilingualism of the authors. Searching for the appropriate classification of the
analysed toponyms, the author created his own classification, which is mostly based on modifications
of the existing proposals. This choice is dictated by the specificity and diversity of the microtoponymic
system under analysis. It is also evoked by the lack of a universally accepted and uniform
system of toponyms.Wydane z udziałem środków dziekana Wydziału Filologicznego U
Obscene, Offensive or “Funny”? On the Social Perception of Several Types of Local Place Names in the Polish-Eastern Slavic Borderland
This article examines local place names which may, due to their form or their use in a wider context of a speech act, be considered to be obscene, offensive or funny. The first group includes names that evoke troublesome associations, even though they are not, etymologically speaking, connected with the taboo sphere (e.g. Gacie, Hujsko, Podupce). The second group consists of place names whose obscene or humorous character is recognisable only by those with relevant linguistic knowledge and awareness (e.g. Przedrzymiechy, Pukarzów, Tarzymiechy). The third and final group contains names whose potentially ridiculous and humorous character is present only when accompanied by a broader text and context of an utterance (e.g. Nielisz, Niemce, Cyców)
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
