Office characteristics and dry eye complaints in European workers–The OFFICAIR study

    No full text
AbstractObjectivesOcular discomfort is a prevalent health complaint in offices. It is hypothesized that, in addition to individual and occupational factors, the buildings' indoor environment may affect eye complaints. However, insight in potential building-related causal factors, needed to allow development of effective prevention strategies in building design, operation and maintenance is limited. This study aimed to investigate the relations between modern office building characteristics and dry eye complaints.MethodsComprehensive characteristics of 167 office buildings in eight European countries, were linked to questionnaire data from 7441 office workers. Multilevel modeling was applied to explore relations between building characteristics and self-reported dry eye complaints, in a cross-sectional study.ResultsAmong office workers investigated, 34% declared dry eye complaints during the past four weeks. Majority of workers (91.2%) experiencing these symptoms, reported improvement on days away from the office. After full adjustment, the regression model revealed a significant increased risk for: proximity (<100 m) to potential sources of outdoor air pollution (OR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.06–1.88), absence of operable windows (OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.34–2.16), portable humidifiers in the offices (OR: 1.58, 95% CI: 1.18–2.11), exposed concrete and/or plaster (OR: 1.29, 95% CI 1.02–1.62) and dispersion and/or emulsion paint as wall covering in offices (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.01–1.41). A negative association was found for cleaning surfaces at least once per week (OR: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.61–0.91).ConclusionsBuilding characteristics were associated with dry eye complaints of office workers. Focused studies are recommended to investigate underlying causes to prevent these symptoms

he convenient, metal-free reduction of imines that contain an inexpensive and removable chiral auxiliary allowed for the synthesis of the immediate precursors of chiral active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). This protocol was carried out under batch and flow conditions to give the correspoding prod- ucts in high yields with almost complete stereocontrol. In the presence of trichlorosilane, an inexpensive and nontoxic reduc- ing agent, and an achiral Lewis base such as N,N-dimethyl- Introduction The pharmaceutical industry is gradually progressing towards enantiopure formulations. Most newly introduced drugs are chiral, and it is expected that approximately 95 % of pharma- ceutical drugs will be chiral by 2020. [1] In this context, chiral amines are considered a class of paramount importance, be- cause they are found in a plethora of compounds such as those of pharmaceutical interest as well as those developed for agro- chemicals, fragrances, and fine chemicals. [2] The reduction of the C=N group is one of the most widely used approaches to synthesize chiral amines, and over the last ten years, successful catalytic enantioselective methods based on both metal-pro- moted [3] and organocatalyzed [4] strategies have been devel- oped. When an industrial synthesis of a chiral pharmaceutical prod- uct must be planned, however, issues such as the chemical effi- ciency and robustness of the procedure, its general applicabil- ity, and economic considerations become crucially important. For these reasons, the applications of many chiral catalytic sys- tems are often not feasible, and the use of inexpensive and readily available chiral auxiliaries becomes an attractive and economic alternative. Indoor environmental conditions (thermal, noise, light, and indoor air quality) may affect workers’ comfort, and consequently their health and well-being, as well as their productivity. This study aimed to assess the relations between perceived indoor environment and occupants’ comfort, and to examine the modifying effects of both personal and building characteristics. Within the framework of the European project OFFICAIR, a questionnaire survey was administered to 7441 workers in 167 “modern” office buildings in eight European countries (Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain). Occupants assessed indoor environmental quality (IEQ) using both crude IEQ items (satisfaction with thermal comfort, noise, light, and indoor air quality), and detailed items related to indoor environmental parameters (e.g., too hot/cold temperature, humid/dry air, noise inside/outside, natural/artificial light, odor) of their office environment. Ordinal logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the relations between perceived IEQ and occupants’ comfort. The highest association with occupants’ overall comfort was found for “noise”, followed by “air quality”, “light” and “thermal” satisfaction. Analysis of detailed parameters revealed that “noise inside the buildings” was highly associated with occupants’ overall comfort. “Layout of the offices” was the next parameter highly associated with overall comfort. The relations between IEQ and comfort differed by personal characteristics (gender, age, and the Effort Reward Imbalance index), and building characteristics (office type and building’s location). Workplace design should take into account both occupant and the building characteristics in order to provide healthier and more comfortable conditions to their occupants. © 2016 by the authors; licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland

Implantação do projeto CRQ verde: a A3P promovendo responsabilidade socioambiental no Conselho Regional de Química da 1a Região (PE - Brasil)

As well as other activities, public agencies are also major consumers of natural resources in their routine activities, being major consumers of paper, cartridges, light bulbs and electronic waste. As a way of minimizing the impacts resulting from this consumption, it is often necessary to implement environmental programs, such as the Public Administration Environmental Agenda (A3P), initiative of the Ministry of Environment, which allows the integration of public agencies with a purpose of many of their usage patterns in six thematic axes. In this sense, aiming at a new administrative organizational culture the Conselho Regional de Química (CRQ-1), a special federal autarchy, with administrative and patrimonial autonomy, whose function is to supervise the work of professionals and companies in the field of Chemistry, which operates throughout the territory of Pernambuco and the territory of Fernando de Noronha and author, also a workplace, adhered to the aforementioned agenda with the objective of implementing and disseminating socio-environmental practices using an A3P as a tool. For the development of this research, the action-research method was used, since the author is a participant in the process. A3P was used as a guidance tool. A socio- environmental diagnosis was carried out by completing a checklist, subsequently, the development of the green CRQ manual was carried out using digital media and and bringing connections of the suggested action plans with the pillars of A3P and with 2030 Agenda. From this, it was possible to identify the existing environmental actions both adopted by the management of the CRQ and by the Charles Darwin Entrepreneur, building where it is based and which already adopts several sustainable practices. In addition, initiate the implementation of new actions, such as: sending invoices by email, inserting sustainable criteria in product purchases, distributing sustainable items at events, among other actions. It was also possible to plan new environmental actions, which are described and detailed in the Sustainable Logistics Plan, technical product of this work that will serve as environmental benchmarking for other organizations. It was possible to verify, through a comparative study, that approximately 87% of the performance indicators suggested by A3P has a direct connection with the goals set out in SDG 12, thus highlighting the importance that although the A3P is voluntary for public agencies, its implementation works as an important tool in directing the insertion of socio-environmental actions and contributing to the achievement of the SDGs provided for in the 2030 Agenda. As products of this research, highlights that the CRQ-1 was the first Conselho Regional de Química and the second in a total of 535 Conselhos Regionais to join the A3P, starting December 8, 2021, the beginning of the insertion of sustainable practices in the routine activities of the CRQ-1 in a conscious way by the management and by the servers and also the elaboration of the green CRQ manual.

Marguerite Yourcenar: a quest for ataraxia; a locus amœnus hindered by absence and presence

    No full text
The birth in 1903 of Marguerite Yourcenar, the acclaimed French writer who was the first immortelle to be admitted to the centuries-old male bastion of the Académie française, was followed ten days later by the death of her mother, Fernande. Accordingly, she received an unconventional education almost uniquely at the hands of her father, Michel, whose erudition and passion for history underpinned his persona and heavily influenced the literary corpus of his daughter. Yourcenar’s oeuvre was initiated in her teens with two collections of poetry, the foundations of which lay in myth — a reflection of her father’s influence. Following subsequent collaboration with her father, the creation of a pseudonym to replace her birth name of Marguerite Cleenewerck de Crayencour allowed her rebirth as Marguerite Yourcenar, in which guise she would create an expansive corpus. Her final text was truncated by her death in 1987, providing testament to her tireless literary vitality and drive. Yourcenar’s novels are replete with an atmosphere of pervading death and darkness, and suffused with the motifs of antithesis: birth and death, absence and presence, past and present. Recent scholarship has concentrated on Yourcenar’s torment concerning the circumstances of her birth which suggest the aura of longing, guilt and loss, and maternal abandonment apparent in her texts. Women are portrayed as often mute and pale reflections of the male protagonist, whilst male homosexual liaisons and incest portray unconventional romantic themes, which distance the author’s writing from societal norms. Maternal absence has been suggested as the major catalyst for the spectres which underlie Yourcenar’s texts, whilst paternal absence and/or presence have been overlooked as a motivating force of her corpus. We contend that this is a significant omission in Yourcenarian scholarship which demands the investigation and analysis to be found in the following thesis. This will provide a valuable insight into paternal absence and presence in Yourcenar’s corpus which has until now remained neglected. An investigation of the life of the author and its influence on her self-reflexive style of penmanship, evidence which insistently underlines her texts but which was vehemently denied by Yourcenar, will reveal her literary struggles for liberation from her memories. A study of memory will follow and reinforce the extent to which it acts as a prominent, yet often subconscious catalyst for literary endeavour, whilst an analysis of Denier du rêve, replete with evidence of the author’s torment and resultant quest for ataraxia,1 will demonstrate unrecognised paternal influence in Yourcenar’s oeuvre, heretofore overshadowed by the maternal spectre, and provide the climax for this thesis manifesting the extent to which absence and presence afford powerful inspiration for the Yourcenarian corpus

Cancer risks for MSH6 pathogenic variant carriers

    No full text
Introduction: Lynch syndrome (LS) is a hereditary cancer syndrome caused by pathogenic variants (PVs) in DNA mismatch repair genes, including MSH6. Although MSH6-associated LS (MSH6-LS) is known to increase the risk of several cancers, precise risk estimates-particularly for non-colorectal cancers-remain uncertain. This limits personalised clinical guidance for MSH6-LS. This study aims to refine cancer risk estimates for individuals with pathogenic or likely pathogenic MSH6 variants. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from 360 Dutch families, comprising 1117 MSH6 PV carriers identified between 1995 and 2020. Pedigree data were collected from multiple clinical centres. Cancer diagnoses were confirmed through medical records where available. Age- and sex-specific hazard ratios (HRs) and cumulative risks (CRs) were calculated using segregation analysis, adjusted for ascertainment bias. Results: By age 80, the cumulative CRC risk was 36 % for males (95 % CI: 25-48 %) and 21 % for females (95 % CI: 13-32 %). For endometrial cancer, the CR was 23 % in females (95 % CI: 15-43 %). At age 40, CRC risk remained low: 0.2 % in males and 0.9 % in females. Elevated lifetime risks were observed for ovarian cancer (6.4 %; HR 5.58), urinary tract cancers (10.1 % in males, 4.1 % in females; HR 2.52), and biliary tract cancers (4.9 % in males, 4.2 % in females; HR 2.76). No increased risk was found for prostate or breast cancer. Conclusion: These refined, age- and sex-specific risk estimates for MSH6 PV carriers inform tailored surveillance strategies, supporting delayed CRC screening and individualised counselling on risk-reducing surgery for women
