Open destinies : modern American women and the short story cycle
Get PDFThis thesis examines the juncture between the short story cycle form and gender politics. It explores how twentieth-century women from the United States have been using the form to represent and question gender identity. The introduction outlines commentaries on the story cycle and considers definitions of the form. It includes case studies of earlier twentieth-century cycles by American women: cycles such as Mary McCarthy's The Company She Keeps that have been passed over by critics of the form.
Chapter One presents Eudora Welty's The Golden Apples as a cycle paradigm, examining conventions such as the form's metafictional dimension and its preoccupation with communal identity. Chapter Two argues that Grace Paley's scattered Faith narratives set a standard for more dispersed versions of the form. Chapter Three considers how Joyce Carol Oates uses the sequential cycle to represent gender identity as a social construct. Chapters Four and Five examine the macrocosmic cycles of Gloria Naylor and Louise Erdrich and consider changes in their form and gender politics. The final 'composite' chapters explore postmodern versions of the form such as Susan Minot's Monkeys. The prose works of Sandra Cisneros stretch across the story cycle continuum, whilst Toni Morrison's Paradise is universally regarded as a novel. Readings of contemporary cycles by Melissa Bank, Elissa Schappell and Emily Carter demonstrate that American women are re-invigorating the form to facilitate the plural identity of the postmodern heroine
Experiencing the armed struggle : the Soweto generation and after
No full textIncludes bibliographical references (p. 354-369).This study explores the experiences of the rank-and-file soldiers of Umkhonto we Sizwe and the Azanian People's Liberation Anny. Extensive interviews by the author and other researchers reveal the voices of the soldiers themselves. The African National Congress and Pan African Congress archives at the University of the Western Cape and the University of Fort Hare supplement and verify these oral testimonies, as do some published sources. Most previously published materials about the armed struggle against apartheid have already focused on diplomacy, strategy and tactics, operations, leadership, and human rights abuses to the neglect of the soldiers' actual experiences. This study complements these with significant new oral history materials from the Soweto generation of soldiers and their successors. When dealing with MK, many authors have documented issues of the camp structure in Angola, and operations inside South Africa, so much of this detail is only addressed briefly, leaving space to explore the soldiers' experiences. In the case of APLA, very little has been written on its history, and more detail is provided on these subjects. This study therefore deals with the soldiers' politicisation and motivation for joining the armed struggle, their experiences in leaving South Africa and training in exile, the crises in exile which limited their effectiveness for a time, their return to fight in South Africa, and their difficulties in the "new" South Africa. These materials reveal that vast problems remain facing these veterans of the struggle against apartheid, and that they have the potential, if properly supported and employed, to contribute substantially to the development of present day South Africa. Conversely, if their neglect continues, they also have the potential to bring vast harm to the country. Further use of the investigative tools of oral history, especially if extended to the former soldiers' vernacular languages, is necessary to augment the history of South Africa, and these soldiers' contributions

Coralline P/CA: development and application of a novel surface ocean phosphate proxy
No full textThe supply of limiting nutrients to the low latitude ocean is controlled by physical processes linked to climate variations, but methods for reconstructing past nutrient concentrations in the surface ocean are few and indirect. This thesis presents the first calibration and downcore application of a new surface ocean phosphate (PO4 SW) proxy derived from coral skeleton P/Ca ratios. Skeletal P/Ca cycles tracked variations in past PO4 SW synchronously with temperature variations associated with seasonal upwelling in a 4-year Gulf of Panamá Pavona gigantea coral. P/Ca records in co-located Gulf of Panamá Pavona gigantea and Porites lobata colonies were strongly correlated to a contemporaneous time-series record of PO4 SW, supporting application of multi-colony calibration equations to down-core records. The P/Ca proxy was applied downcore to reconstruct an 18-year history of central equatorial Pacific PO4 SW. The PO4 SW record decreased during El Niño warm phases, resulting from decreased upwelling. In addition, a large 6-fold decrease in PO4 SW occurred from ~1982-1990, distinct from sea surface temperature changes in the central Equatorial Pacific. The decadal scale nutrient regime shift likely occurred in response to the observed decreases in wind stress and equatorial upwelling with possible linkages to the 1976/77 climate shift and changes in mid-latitude upwelling source water. The reliability of P/Ca was tested in low nutrient environments (Gulf of Eilat, Israel and Florida Keys, USA). Downcore P/Ca variability is low on centennial timescales in the Florida Keys record, implying that other possible influences on P incorporation (i.e. biological vital effects) are minimal and that the P/Ca proxy is not subject to major diagenetic alteration. With further development, the coralline P/Ca proxy could be applied to reconstruct PO4 SW on millennial timescales and be used to place modern tropical and subtropical nutrient distributions and dynamics in a paleoceanographic perspective.Ph.D.Includes abstractVitaIncludes bibliographical referencesby Michèle Gloria LaVign

Informal gold mining and mercury pollution in Brazil
Get PDFThe Amazon region has been responsible for a major share of Brazilian gold production in recent years. The region has witnessed a sizable gold rush comparable only to the California gold rush last century. The gold rush has spawned a powerful informal mining sector and has attracted many people - some who have come to the region in search of wealth and some who were already there but were displaced from other, unsuccessful economicactivities. What these people encounter at the mining sites are dreadful living and working conditions. Gold mining also causes substantial environmental problems, which may persist whether gold deposits do or not. The author discusses the environmental effects of gold mining in the region, focusing on mercury pollution. Mercury, an important input in gold extraction, is being discharged into the atmosphere and the rivers at alarming rates. The environmental costs of the present extraction, is being discharged into the atmosphere and the rivers at alarming rates. The environmental costs of the present extraction technology will be faced primarily by future generations, because of natural chemical processes. Although removing the mercury already discharged from the Amazonian environment may be an enormous task, at least future discharges should be curtailed through the use of appropriate technology, environmental education, and a combination of command and control measures and market-based incentives. The author describes the gold extraction process and the extent of mercury use and contamination. He analyzes key elements of the environmental problem, especially the informal miner and the fish economy. Finally, he suggests a combination of command and control regulations and market-based incentives adapted to the informal gold mining economic environment.
