A hierarchical set of indicators in the production organization to tune entrepreneurial activities

Summary form only given. The aim of indicators in the production organization is to increase employee motivation. It is expected that this will lead to a higher quality of products and processes if the indicators are derived from the overall business goal and if no suboptimalisation takes place. From studies of the use of indicators in different production environments it appears that it is difficult to avoid: redundancy, suboptimalisation and calling every indicator a performance indicator. In this paper a more theoretical approach is followed to derive an hierarchical set of indicators avoiding mentioned drawbacks or misinterpretation. Customer satisfaction is taken as business goal followed by four 'information transformation' steps to specify and complete the wanted physical product: the observation of customer wants, the choice of the product concept and processes, the structuring of product and production system and the completion of the production function. To control the quality of these 'information transformation' steps, three decision levels are defined: strategy, tactics and execution with measurable indicators or ratios at each decision level. These ratios are respectively productivity, performance and effective use of capability, materials, energy and environment. The ratios at the three decision levels are used to control the planned production activities. In the event of observed deviations, the emphasis is on the analysis of the effective use of capability and material to find possibilities for improvements. Failure mode and effect analysis is used by improvement teams to set priorities

The technology vicinity: a location based view on technology

The issue of technology transfer has been viewed from many different perspectives. In this case the focus is on the process of (production) technology transfer. One of the difficulties in studying international technology transfer is the definition of technology. The many technology definitions that exist are either too ‘loosely’ formulated or they require thorough expert knowledge. This results in difficulties with measuring technology and comparing different studies meaningfully. This study on technology transfer used technology as a sensitizing concept. Four case studies were performed and during these case studies a definition of technology was developed and refined, to obtain a meaningful representation of the technology at hand. The model enables the researchers on the transfer of technology to measure what is transferred. The research also showed that a technology can not be viewed in isolation but organizational factors and environmental factors influence the productivity of a technology. Therefore the functioning of technology should be viewed as dependent on its location

    Management of e-technology in China

"e" technology is bringing about many challenges for companies, in particular for their managers. This concerns a vast range of business processes in many sectors of the economy and in nearly every country of the world. In rapidly industrializing China, companies and other organizations are actively finding their way by adapting, developing and exploiting new e-technologies. The paper's focus is the identification of the management issues in implementing e-technology in China. The paper reports on research into difficulties of establishing and operating e-business in China. In particular, it discusses management related to e-technology sharing and application. A brief review of literature is followed by the analysis of three recent case studies: an international IT services alliance, a financial services provider and an international manufacturing joint venture. All case companies are applying e-technology in China, but the role of e-technology differs in the three cases: adding a service line to the existing business processes; developing a new business process; and increasing efficiency and effectiveness in business processes. The conclusions present the emerging management issues: cooperation is a key asset in networking; the choice of business models plays an important role; adequate management attention for details such as a training program is require

Knowledge-based view on internationalization and effect of product/service types

Small Infocom firms often show fast international growth. However, there are also differences in attitudes, speed and scope of internationalization within the industry and these can partly be attributed to differences in knowledge related variables like level of knowledge, its tacitness and path dependency. Results from our survey of 171 Finnish SMEs show that product or service type may act as a moderator in the relationship between the knowledge variables and internationalization.</p
