Özgören, Simge (Dogus Author)The purpose of this study is to examine the gender issues in rewriting in Jeanette Winterson's Sexing the Cherry. Rewriting is the act of reexamining, rewording, reconceptualizing the classics with a certain perspective in contemporary world. In literary history, there are a lot of examples for rewriting and the writers all have different purposes in their acts. Political, postcolonial and feminist rewritings are the most popular techniques to be employed by writers. Among these, feminist rewriting with its gender and identity concerns can be taken as the most popular since it deals with both the physicality and the psychology of the self. In general, the inferior position of women in a patriarchal society is criticized in feminist theory. In order to achieve such criticism, rewriters like Winterson use the classics to give a different perspective and place to the women in society. In building up this argument, the concept of rewriting will be explained in detail in the light of the theories of Saussure, Kristeva and Bakhtin. After giving the theoretical background of rewriting, this thesis will specifically focus upon the gender issues in rewriting under the guidance of the feminist theory. Along with the theoretical discussion, Jeanette Winterson's Sexing the Cherry which is the rewritten version of the popular German fairy tale the Twelve Dancing Princesses will be examined in depth. On iki Dans Eden Prenses masalından yola çıkarak yeniden yazdığı Vişnenin Cinsiyeti adlı kitabı ele alınacaktır.TABLE OF CONTENTS, ii -- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, iii -- ABSTRACT, iv -- ÖZET, v -- INTRODUCTION, 1 -- CHAPTER 1. Ocean literacy (OL) refers to the ability of citizens to understand and explain the concepts and phenomena related to the oceans, and leads them to positive behavioral change for the protection and sustainability of the oceans. The study presents a bibliometric analysis of ocean literacy-based studies published between 2017 and 2021, in order to provide more meaningful information about (a) the academic journals that mostly publish ocean literacy studies, (b) the content analysis of the articles, (c) country rankings over the years (d) the keywords mostly used and (e) the funding source. The Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases were used to find ocean literacy-based articles. Seventy-nine articles from forty ocean literacy academic journals covered by WoS and Scopus were carefully selected using predefined criteria. The results revealed that most of ocean literacy-based articles were published in the Frontiers in Marine Science journal (n=23). The countries that published the most ocean literacy-based articles were UK, Italy, Canada, USA, and Portugal. Most of the studies were supported by governmental budgets (n=44). The most popular concepts in ocean literacy-based studies included “Global OL Perspectives’’, “Sustainability”, “Citizen Science”, “Students’ OL Improvement”, “Measuring and Evaluating Students and Teachers’ OL”, “Stakeholders’ Effects on OL”, “OL Based Books-iBooks-Textbooks” and “Individuals’ Affective Domain on OL”. By considering the large number of ocean literacy-based articles published in academic journals indexed in WoS and Scopus, this article can contribute significantly to ocean literacy studies and informed and responsible research, as well as to citizen input to policy development on ocean literacy.</p

Why does tension band wiring fail in transverse patellar fractures? Radiographic insights from a 10-years retrospective cohort

No full text
Background The aim of this study was to identify the radiographic parameters associated with failure of tension band wiring (TBW) in the treatment of transverse patellar fractures, with the goal of guiding surgical decision-making. Materials and methods A total of 76 patients underwent surgical treatment for patellar fractures at Trakya University between January 2013 and December 2022. We retrospectively analyzed 32 patients who met the study's inclusion criteria for transverse fractures (AO Type 34- C1) treated with TBW. Radiographic parameters assessed included patellar width, inter-K-wire distance, K-wire-to-patella ratios, knot configuration, and K-wire length, all evaluated for their potential association with fixation failure. Failure was defined as cerclage wire slippage or breakage. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS and Jamovi software. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, chi-square or Fisher's exact tests, logistic regression, and ROC analysis were performed. A p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results The mean age was 50 years +/- 15.8 (range 26-80), with 8 women (25%) and 24 men (75%). Nine patients (28.1%) experienced TBW failure. Notably, single-knot constructs had significantly higher failure rates (66.7% vs. 19.2%; OR = 0.119, 95% CI [0.017-0.843], p = 0.038). Increased K-wire length was associated with failure (p = 0.008; cutoff 69.1 mm, AUC = 0.785). Patella-K-wire length ratio was higher in failures (p = 0.035). Lateral K-wire to articular distance and lateral K-wire to articular distance surface to patella thickness ratio were also significant predictors in slippage group (p = 0.046 and p = 0.031). Conclusion The number of knots, K-wire length, and specific radiographic parameters are important predictors of TBW failure. Attention to construct configuration and K-wire placement is crucial to minimize failure risk

Elias Canetti confronts with the local culture and the daily life of the famous city Marrakech during his travel to Morocco in 1954. The impressions he got from his experiences in the city of Marrakech are reflected in his work The Voices of Marrakesh which covers the main subject of the present study. The aim of the present study is to analyze how the author, who is protagonist and narrator as well, understands, perceives and reflects the local culture. A number of literary concepts which have an effect on Canetti’s literature are useful for the current analysis: the “acoustic mask”, the “metamorphose”, the “death” and the “power”. Canetti does not take any specific standpoint towards the foreign culture he confronts, rather his position changes depending on the situation. From that perspective his confrontation with the traditional and authentic life styles becomes more understandable under the light of his own terms. The present study consists of four chapters. The first chapter covers Elias Canetti’s life, authorship, relation to the languages – especially to German – and the terms “metamorphose”, “acoustic mask”, “death” and “power”. The second chapter discusses whether The Voices of Marrakesh can be described as a work of travel literature. The third chapter dwells on otherness and confrontation with the foreign culture. The fourth chapter, which introduces the work The Voices of Marrakesh and gives information about its writing-process, provides empirical data based on analysis conducted under the light of the theoretical framework introduced in third chapter. This part covers city images and analyzes how the images of the city are perceived by the author strolling around the streets, bazaars and squares. The last chapter marked as conclusion summarizes approach of the character towards the city and discusses authenticity of the images. It concludes the fact that Canetti does not stand a fixed point of view towards the foreign culture he confronts with, rather he holds an inconsistent approach towards the alien object. In case Canetti confronts with a foreign cultural element which he describes as strange and he cannot perceive, he ennobles that element of culture.Elias Canetti 1954’te Fas’a yaptığı seyahatte ünlü kent Marakeş’in gündelik yaşamıyla ve yerel kültürüyle karşılaşır.

The need for an antibiotic stewardship program in a hospital using a computerized pre-authorization system

No full text
Objectives: Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) have an important role in the appropriate utilization of antibiotics. Some of the core strategies recommended for ASPs are pre-authorization and prospective audit and feedback. In Turkey, a unique nationwide antibiotic restriction program (NARP) has been in place since 2003. The aim of this study was to measure the effect of a prospective audit and feedback strategy system along with the NARP. Methods: A prospective quasi-experimental study was designed and implemented between March and June 2017. A computerized pre-authorization system was used as an ASP strategy to approve the antibiotics. During the baseline period, patients with intravenous (IV) antibiotic use >= 72 h were monitored without intervention. In the second period, feedback and treatment recommendations were given to attending physicians in the case of IV antibiotic use >= 72 h. The modified criteria of Kunin et al. and Gyssens et al. were followed for appropriateness of prescribing. Days of therapy (DOT) and length of stay (LOS) were calculated and compared between the two study periods. Results: A total of 866 antibiotic episodes among 519 patients were observed. A significant reduction in systemic antibiotic consumption was observed in the intervention period (575 vs. 349 DOT per 1000 patient-days; p < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, prospective audit and feedback (odds ratio 1.5, 95% confidence interval 1.09-2.04; p = 0.011) and pre-authorization of restricted antibiotics (odds ratio 1.7; 95% confidence interval 1.2-2.31; p = 0.002) were the predictors of appropriate antimicrobial use. Mean LOS was decreased by 2.9 days (p = 0.095). Conclusions: This study showed that the antimicrobial restriction program alone was effective, but the system should be supported by a tailored ASP, such as prospective audit and feedback. Development of a deep wavelet pyramid scene parsing semantic segmentation network for scene perception in indoor environments

No full text
In this paper, a new Deep Wavelet Pyramid Scene Parsing Network (DW-PSPNet) is proposed as an effective combination of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), inception module, the channel and spatial attention modules, and PSPNet. Improved semantic segmentation via the combination, to our best knowledge, is not yet reported in the literature. The paper has two main contributions: (1) a new backbone network into PSPNET introduced by a combination of DWT, inspection modules, and attention mechanisms; (2) a new and improved version of PSPNet base structure. Further, three new modifications are introduced. First, the drop activation function is used to increase validation and test accuracy of the segmentation. Second, a skip connection from the backbone is applied to increase validation and test accuracies by restoring the resolution of feature maps via full utilization of multilevel semantic features. Third, Inverse Wavelet Transform (IWT) and convolution layer are applied to obtain the segmented images without information loss. DW-PSPNet was implemented via our own data generated by using a Robotis-Op3 humanoid robot to detect objects in indoor environments and and benchmark data set. Simulation results show higher performance of the proposed network compared with that of previous successful networks in handling semantic segmentation tasks in indoor environments. Moreover, extensive experiments on the benchmark Ade20K data set were also conducted. DW-PSPNET achieved an mIoU score of 45.97% on the ADE20K validation set, which are new state-of-the-art results. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature

This study was supported by I\u015F\u0131k University . The author thanks colleagues Bet\u00FCl Ozar and Simge G\u00FClbahar for their guidance in the design development of the two signage designs, and research assistant Meri\u00E7 Dik for dedicated support in developing the virtual environment. Gratitude is also extended to the volunteer students who participated in the VR experience for their valuable time and contributions. This study explores how alternative wayfinding signage designs influence user experience within immersive virtual environments during early-stage architectural evaluation. A 3D model of a university building's ground floor was developed and experienced through head-mounted displays (HMDs) to simulate spatial conditions. Eighteen participants completed structured navigation tasks in two signage settings, followed by post-task surveys and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data—task completion times and circulation paths—were analysed alongside thematic evaluations of user feedback. Findings reveal that signage design affects spatial perception, navigational efficiency, and user satisfaction. The study shows that early-stage VR testing supports user-informed design decisions, especially for evaluating signage-based spatial strategies and related user experience considerations. VR emerges as a practical tool for integrating user-centred feedback into the pre-occupancy phase of spatial planning.Işık UniversityPublisher's Versio
