Covid-19, inequality and the media
The coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating effect on the UK economy as well as on the health and well-being of the nation. The series of lockdowns, which began in March 2020, shut down large parts of the economy and caused the largest fall in economic activity since records began. The media have played a key role in mediating the understanding of the crisis, as politicians and the press alike wrestled to stay ahead of the evolving situation. Wealth inequality, already much higher than income inequality, also increased as a result of the pandemic. This chapter looks at public attitudes to media coverage of the economic effects of the pandemic
Introduction: the media and inequality
Inequality has become the defining economic issue of our time. Growing public concern about inequality has also led to populist revolts against political elites that have swept America, Britain and parts of Europe. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines the way inequality in its various dimensions have evolved over the past 20 years. It shows that certain ethnic minority groups have suffered disproportionally from poverty and falls in real income. The book reflects the fact that poverty rather than its structural roots in inequality has been the main focus of media attention and research. It shows that the public has an intense interest in understanding the economic consequences of the pandemic but is highly critical of how well media has done its job
'There is no alternative'? The role of the media in shaping public understanding about the economy
In the context of the ‘cost of living crisis’, building a more inclusive economy in the UK is more important than ever. The news media plays an important agenda-setting role in
any effort to reshape the economy, especially during crises, by deciding which experts will frame debates, and shaping views on economic policies (Knowles 2020a; Schifferes and
Knowles 2022). However, low economic literacy is a significant barrier to a better informed and engaged public in the UK, as elsewhere. This chapter responds to a central
paradox: as the global economic system is becoming more complex, the public is consuming more mainstream news, but, at the same time, journalism is increasingly under-resourced and the public trusts journalists less (Schifferes and Knowles 2022). This paper evaluates a range of (academic and industry-based) surveys of the public and journalists to evaluate how their views overlap and what strategies might improve the engagement and quality of economic news
The Four Forces Behind Knowles\u27 Andragogy
The career of the father of adult education in the U.S., Malcolm S. Knowles, was a phenomenon in itself. Although Knowles is the most referenced adult educator of his time (Sopher, 2003a), he has, at times, also been the most misunderstood adult educator in the U.S. Knowles\u27 (1989b) autobiography provided some in sights into his writing styles, his highly successful career, and his theory of adult education -- the introduction of andragogy in the U.S. -- nor did it provide context for a deeper understanding of the times, what influenced his thinking and his contribution major forces that influenced Knowles, which Knowles most likely influenced as well
