The comparison of room acoustic simulations with experimental data is essential to verify the reliability of simulation models used for the development of vehicle and aircraft cabins. Applying energy based simulation techniques, such as ray tracing, it is possible to predict the impulse response and thus main acoustic characteristics of an enclosure. The results, however, are strongly influenced by input parameters, such as the acoustic absorption coefficient. Practice has shown that the absorption of real technical systems may differ sig-nificantly from those which can be determined by measurements using reference test samples (eg. Kundt´s tube). Thus it is not trivial to use the “right” material properties in acoustic simulation models. It is therefore necessary to develop a systematic procedure to reduce the deviation between measured and calculated room impulse responses data and thus update and/or improve numerical simula-tion models. Room Absorption Property Optimizer (RAPO) is a tool developed in this study to solve this issue. This tool is able to optimize the absorption coefficient of room materials by adjusting a ray tracing based simulation to a measured room im-pulse response. To make this possible RAPO stores and processes the ray tracing information. Creating several matrices and being able to recreate the simulation mathemati-cally, RAPO changes the room absorption parameters in an iterative way using a non-linear least squares optimization algorithm until the simulated Energy Decay Curve (EDC) fits as good as possible to the EDC taken from measured impulse responses. However, the appropriate handling of additional simulation parameters, such as order of reflection and the number of rays, as well as the number and size of each material surfaces are crucial to reduce the number of possible optima and thus to improve the reliability of the optimization. There issues are discussed in detail in this study and open new topics for further investigations

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

With the rapid development of virtual reality technologies, the simulation of acoustics in virtual environments also became increasingly important. While innovative methods for physically based audio reproduction in a VR environment have been developed in the academic field, no major developments have been made in this area in commercial VR systems. In this thesis, a concept is developed for the realistic reproduction of a sound field in the low-frequency range in the virtual environment of the commercial Unity game engine. The concept is based on combining the results of a finite element method simulation with the virtual environment from Unity. Based on performed mapping measurements, it is shown that the sound distribution generated with the developed concept matches a real sound distribution

Development of a simulation framework for dynamically loaded multifunctional composite structures and evaluation of vibration control performance

Within the framework of this master’s thesis, a dynamically loaded multifunctional polymer electrolyte coated carbon fibre (PeCCF) composites structure is investigated. The PeCCF composite structure is a multifunctional structure, which provide the load bearing function simultaneously can store and transport electric energy. Due to electric resistance in the composite structure, the structure interior temperature rises which reduces the stiffness of polymer electrolyte coating, so that the structural stiffness is significantly reduced. Moreover, the structural stiffness depends on fibre orientation and fibre volume fraction. With this multi-physical material behavior, this composite structures can be used for sound reduction and vibration control since the natural frequency of structure depends on its stiffnesses. In this thesis a simulation framework of PeCCF composite structure in COMSOL and Matlab is developed to analyse its vibration reduction potential. Furthermore, suitable design parameters are identified to optimize the vibration reduction for exemplary application scenarios. Furthermore the developed PeCCF composite structure is able to withstand the load during the flight
