Brillouin nonlinearity characterizations of a high refractive index silicon oxynitride platform [Invited]
Full text linkSilicon oxynitride (SiON) is a low-loss and versatile material for linear and nonlinear photonics applications. Controlling the oxygen-to-nitrogen (O/N) ratio in SiON provides an effective way to engineer its optical and mechanical properties, making it a great platform for the investigation of on-chip optomechanical interactions, especially the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). Here, we report the Brillouin nonlinearity characterization of a SiON platform with a specific O/N ratio (characterized by a refractive index of n = 1.65). First, we introduce this particular SiON platform with fabrication details. Subsequently, we discuss various techniques for the on-chip Brillouin nonlinearity characterizations. In particular, we focus on the intensity-modulated pump-probe lock-in amplifier technique, which enables ultra-sensitive characterization. Finally, we analyze the Brillouin nonlinearities of this SiON platform and compare them with other SiON platforms. This work underscores the potential of SiON for on-chip Brillouin-based applications. Moreover, it paves the way for Brillouin nonlinearity characterization across various material platforms
Yvan Goll ed il crollo del mito d'Europa
Full text linkThe objective of this work is to investigate the meaning of myth in the work of Yvan Goll (1891-1950), a Franco-German, bilingual and Jewish poet. In his poems, characters of the classical tradition alternate with biblical and historical figures: among all stands out the topic of the myth of Europe, understood as a geographical space and universal homeland for all those who, born in a borderland like Goll, feel “heimatlos”, that is stateless. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate how the artist's dialogue with the myth follows precise and constant rules with a clear goal: to send a strong message to the contemporary world. Taking into consideration the works dedicated to the mythical heritage, it is observed how after the Mythisierung (mythisation) of the old continent, the author deconstructs his own creation through a systematic Entmythisierung (demythisation)
“I myself am the author”: Gve Flaubert, or writer-manuscript
Full text linkThe article attempts to present and discuss the juvenile works of Gustave Flaubert. Though the writer never allowed these juvenile works to be published, being extremely critical of their aesthetic value, the works such as November, Memoirs of a Madman or the diary-form Cahier intime de 1840–1841 still make important texts that provide a sizeable amount of information on the writer’s literary workshop. Interestingly enough, these early works show the writer’s attachment to the manuscript (tantamount to the dislike to the written word) and the author’s tools (pen, ink and paper). These juvenile attempts, in the main autobiographical in nature, are thus penetrated by the metatext element that is a key input in providing an opportunity for a reflection on the way the text itself does exist: this element also informs us on Flaubert’s growing maturity that ultimately defined his role of a fully-fledged author. The paratext elements (epigraphs, dedications, inscriptions, dates and signatures) in his juvenile works seem to be just as important as they allow us to follow, step by step, the way to the birth of a writer-manuscript and thus a writer who gets his fulfillment and the very existence exclusively in a text of a manuscript character.</p
L'évolution du groupe des ouvriers dans l'agglomération parisienne (1962-1975)
No full textHaving analysed the overall evolution of this group between 1962 and 1975, the author stresses the following transformations which took place between these two dates -an increase in the number of males, foreigners and the average age -while underlining the fact that these worker's standard of professional qualification was maintened in the metropolitan area.
The second part of the article explains the «geographical» evolution of the working class in the area under study : this evolution is caracterised by a weakening of existing working class strongholds and by the spatial dilution of working class homes. As far as age groups and the standard of professional qualification are concerned geographical disparities hardly changed at all between 1962 and 1975.Après avoir analysé l'évolution globale du groupe entre 1962 et 1975, l'auteur souligne certaines transformations intervenant entre les deux dates retenues -masculinisation, vieillissement, progression d'étrangers -tout en rappelant le maintien du niveau de qualification des ouvriers de l'agglomération.
La deuxième partie de l'article expose l'évolution de la «géographie» du groupe ouvrier à l'intérieur de l'espace considéré : celle-ci se caractérise par l'affaiblissement des bastions ouvriers existants et par la dilution spatiale de la résidence ouvrière. Brillouin- and Kerr-mediated parametric light sources in scalable photonic platforms
Full text linkThis thesis investigates Brillouin- and Kerr-active light sources in scalable silicon nitride platforms. We design waveguides that support both Brillouin scattering, a nonlinear optical process mediated by an acoustic wave, and the Kerr nonlinearity, an intensity-dependent refractive index. Using these waveguides, high spectral purity Brillouin lasers and broadband microcomb sources are realized by forming optical microresonators. In this work, we demonstrate an enhancement of Brillouin strength by several orders of magnitude, present multiple Brillouin photonic applications, realize Brillouin lasers and microcomb sources, and theoretically examine the interaction of competing Brillouin and Kerr gain in a single microcavity.Chapter 2 establishes the theoretical and technical background, covering nonlinear optics in integrated photonics, microring resonators, microcomb generation, and the principles of Brillouin scattering.In Chapter 3, we evaluate silicon nitride geometries including thick, symmetric dual-stripe, and asymmetric dual-stripe waveguides for SBS and Kerr nonlinearity. Optimized symmetric dual-stripe designs enabled low-loss fabrication (7 dB/m) and supported both Brillouin lasing and Brillouin-induced Kerr frequency combs.Chapter 4 introduces a numerical model of competing Brillouin and Kerr gain in microresonators. Simulations show that Brillouin microcombs can form in forward or backward directions depending on the free spectral range (FSR) and pump conditions. Acoustic detuning was found to be critical, as FSR values slightly below the Brillouin shift prevent suppression of Brillouin lasing by Kerr induced cross-phase modulation.In Chapter 5, we enable enhanced Brillouin gain by integrating silicon nitride with tellurite glass and coupling to surface acoustic waves (SAWs). This hybrid approach improved Brillouin strength by over two orders of magnitude, enabling demonstrations of a 10-dB optical amplifier, a tunable microwave notch filter with 2.2-MHz linewidth, and a Brillouin phonon laser with a record-low 7-Hz acoustic linewidth.Together, these results demonstrate that Brillouin and Kerr nonlinear sources can be integrated in silicon nitride, offering scalable routes to high-coherence lasers, frequency combs, and multifunctional microwave photonic devices. This establishes a foundation for applications ranging from optical frequency division to coherent phonon sources and advanced signal processing.<br/
Unterwelt\'s figuration in Yvan Goll\'s work from the reading of the poems \'Unterwelt\' (1917) and \'Unterwelt\' (1918)
No full textEsta dissertação se propõe a contextualizar e analisar as imagens de \"Unterwelt\" presentes na obra de Yvan Goll a partir da interpretação de dois poemas de mesmo título: \"Unterwelt\" (1917), publicado na revista Die Aktion, e \"Unterwelt\" (1918), publicado no ciclo de poemas Der neue Orpheus: eine Dithyrambe (1918). Partimos do pressuposto de que há uma diversidade de figuras na poesia de Goll que são mobilizadas para dar forma a uma concepção de Unterwelt própria, calcada nas experiências poéticas e biográficas do autor. Na busca por compreender como tais figuras se mobilizam, será importante, por um lado, recuperar a trajetória do poeta, suas relações literárias e os temas que lhe foram caros durante a vida, e, por outro, sondar as razões pelas quais a imagem do Unterwelt se assenta tão bem à representação desse estágio de Modernidade. Consideramos, sobretudo, que é relevante entender como Goll se apropria do topos da descida aos infernos para criar uma concepção original de Unterwelt, fazendo parte de uma tradição de recuperação do mito e ao mesmo tempo dela se diferenciando. Por fim a proficuidade da imagem do Unterwelt na obra de Goll nos permite circular pelos textos do autor e considerar também outros textos do autor a fim de dar suporte à análise dos dois poemas escolhidos.This dissertation intends to contextualize and analyze the images of \"Unterwelt\" present in Yvan Goll\'s work from the interpretation of two poems of the same title: \"Unterwelt\" (1917), published in Die Aktion magazine, and \"Unterwelt\" (1918), published in the cycle of poems Der neue Orpheus: eine Dithyrambe (1918). We assume that there is a diversity of figures in Goll\'s poetry that are mobilized to form a Unterwelt conception of his own, based on the author\'s poetic and biographical experiences. In the quest to understand how these figures mobilize, it will be important, on the one hand, to recover the poet\'s trajectory, his literary relations and the themes that were dear to him during his life, and, on the other hand, to probe the reasons why the image of the Unterwelt fits so well with the representation of this stage of Modernity. Above all, we consider it important to understand how Goll appropriates the topos of the descent into hell to create an original conception of Unterwelt, part of a tradition of myth recovery and at the same time differentiating from it. Finally, the proficiency of the image of Unterwelt in Goll\'s work allows us to circulate through the author\'s texts and also consider other author\'s texts in order to support the analysis of the two chosen poems
Go green or stay on red: critical time in humanitarian action
No full textThis dissertation focuses on humanitarian action and security in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the DRC and the Central Africa region. Using the humanitarian-security-development paradigm, I tackle the problem of the ineffectiveness of the traditional approach to humanitarian intervention in Africa, and provide a critical path to a systemic shift towards long-term stability and security by developing innovative institutional and operational mechanisms for peace recovery.On the security front, I argue that peace recovery through humanitarian action requires that the anchors of traditional security in indigenous Africa, based on sociological factors such as ethnicity and cultural dynamics, be integrated into the modern security framework. In addition to the security factor, I contend that addressing the issue of identity crises that are engendered and fueled by displacement during violent conflicts is equally important for long-term recovery. I argue that this could best be accomplished by applying an overarching ideology, such as Pan-Africanism, to aid in the victims’ construction of a more inclusive identity. Additionally, to further ensure effectiveness in humanitarian operations and delivery, I argue that the crisis of institutional deficits should be addressed through the empowerment and participation of local actors such as church leaders, organizations in civil society, traditional leaders, and other local authorities who are currently excluded or ignored in the design and implementation of humanitarian policies and strategies, despite their influential roles in local communities. I further emphasized that such an effort by itself would not be successful if sustainable solutions to the problem of post-conflict military integration are not provided. Hence, I suggest the use of transitional public security principles, focusing on rebuilding trust within the military ranks, professionalization of the defense forces, and the restoration of civilian-military relations as critical elements. To the above systemic and structural efforts, I argue for the adoption of practical solutions that address the issue of refugees and IDPs who are living in the camps. These strategies should be people-centered, with the victims making any decision regarding their readiness to return or reintegrate into their old communities. This readiness must be followed by an assessment of factors such as the institutional viability and legitimacy of actors in the country or communities to which refugees or IDPs might return. I conclude that it is only when these factors are considered and implemented under one integrated humanitarian framework that security will be recovered and peace guaranteed, both in the DRC and in the broader region.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference
