The Greening of Theology: The Ecological Models of Rosemary Radford Ruether, Joseph Sittler, and Jürgen Moltmann
This volume examines the contributions of three contemporary theologians -- Rosemary Radford Ruether, Joseph Sittler, and Jurgen Moltmann -- to the development of Christian ecological theology. Against the charge that the Christian tradition is ecologically bankrupt, the author demonstratesthe intellectual and spiritual resources available within Christianity for addressing ecological issues. Of particular interest are Ruether\u27s doctrine of God and her emphasis on ecojustice, Sittler\u27s cosmic Christology and reconception of the relation between nature and grace, and Motlmann\u27sdoctrine of the Holy Spirit and argument for social trinitarianism. Beyond evaluating the issues raised by Ruether, Sittler, and Moltmann, the author presents sixteen theses or desiderata for any adequate Christian ecological theology
Ákall um nýjan alheimssáttmála: Guð, maður og náttúra í vistguðfræðilegum skrifum Rosemary Radford Ruether
In this article the focus is on the feminist eco-theology of Rosemary Radford Reuther (1936–2022). According to the author, Ruether attempts to create a new Covenant between God, humanity, and nature in her eco-theological contributions, initiating very different relations between the three entities above. This covenant is simultaneously the way forward for humanity when facing the threatening situation that exist in our world today in a climate changed world.Í þessari grein er sjónum beint að femínískri vistguðfræði Rosemary Radford Ruether (1936 –2022). Litið er svo á að Ruether setji fram nýjan sáttmála milli Guðs, mannkyns og náttúru í skrifum sínum. Hún boðar umbreytt tengsl milli aðilanna þriggja og að þau tengsl séu jafnframt sú leið sem mannkyni bjóðist út úr þeim hættulegu aðstæðum sem loftlagsbreyt-ingarnar valda nú um stundir

Cataract surgery and the development or progression of age-related macular degeneration: A systematic review
Bockelbrink A, Roll S, Ruether K, Rasch A, Greiner W, Willich SN. Cataract surgery and the development or progression of age-related macular degeneration: A systematic review. SURVEY OF OPHTHALMOLOGY. 2008;53(4):359-367.Age-related macular degeneration and cataract are the most frequent eye disorders of elderly people worldwide. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effect of cataract surgery on the development and progression of age-related macular degeneration. Data were collected by means of a systematic literature search in 28 databases and an additional update in Pubmed. Search results were evaluated using pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. All relevant publications were rated in terms of scientific quality and analyzed regarding their results. The literature search generated a total of 2,827 hits. Seven publications on five observational studies and two non-randomized clinical trials were eligible for analysis. The observational studies provided some evidence for an increased incidence of late age-related macular degeneration, respectively, for a promoting influence of cataract surgery on the progression of early types of age-related macular degeneration. The clinical trials did yield inconsistent results. In conclusion, only a small number of published studies investigated the development or progression of age-related macular degeneration following cataract surgery. The scientific level of evidence of these articles was not high and results were inconsistent, nevertheless a promoting influence of cataract surgery on the progression of early age-related macular degeneration can be assumed
Reconsidering ecclesiology: feminist perspectives
The predominant model in feminist theologians' critique of theology and praxis of the church has been that of women-church based on the concept of base ecclesial communities developed by liberation theology. The first part of this thesis challenges the women-church model by arguing that even though women-church asserts that women are church, its shortcomings lie in its lack of use of the ecclesiological tradition as well as its unawareness of the dimension of gender for ecclesiology. A feminist reader-response critique of four traditional ecclesiologies shows that women have so far not participated in the process of writing ecclesiology, but that women need to reclaim the ecclesiological tradition because they participate in the church. An analysis of the use of liberation theology for feminist ecclesiology demonstrates that the ecclesiology of liberation theology, even though it points out that the reality of human beings being church shapes the theology of the church, remains unaware of the dimension of sexual difference. Chapter five discusses 'gendered ecclesiology’ as pointing to the importance of sexuality for the rewriting of ecclesiology. In order to write an ecclesiology conscious of the fact that the church consists of sexuate human beings feminists need to reclaim the communion of saints, Mariology and most importantly the relationship between Christ and the church. Chapter six concludes that feminist theologians are not to develop one particular ecclesiological model as the most apt one, but to redefine the ecclesiological debate from the perspective of women being church. In order to do that it is necessary to reclaim the power centres of patriarchal ecclesiological discourse: sacramental celebration, the word of God and the presence of Christ. The church as the community that embodies the body of Christ becomes the space where the stories of women’s lives tell and perform the story of Christ

Ph.D.This dissertation contends that the theological address of ecological issues is of necessity for two purposes: one, to construct an ecological theology that is an adequate belief system with environmental concerns; two, to offer an understanding of the etiology of and possible prescription to the pressing ecological crisis basing on the religious belief and value system. This dissertation conducts a synthetical study of the ecotheologies of John Cobb, Jr. and Rosemary Radford Ruether, the former is established with reference to the Whiteheadian process philosophy, and the latter employs the ecofeminist criticism. Whiteheadian process philosophy as a philosophy of organism provides a metaphysical foundation which emphasizes the interconnectedness and interdependence of all entities. Cobb’s process theology adopts this philosophy of organism, and brings forth an ecological consciousness through the interpretation of panentheism, interconnected God-human-world relations. Ecofeminist criticism draws a noteworthy connection between the domination of women and the domination of nature and claims that the ecological issues and feminist issues are interconnected. The ecofeminist theology of Ruether exposures the patriarchalism and dualism of the Judeo-Chrisitan tradition for they reinforce an ideology of domination of the Western culture and society. The ecofeminist criticism assists Ruether to envision a new consciousness and spirituality that liberates both women and nature from the ideology of domination by the of the doctrine of God and other biblical traditions, such as the prophetic God and the covenantal tradition. With the recognization of the contrast between and the distinctiveness of the ecotheologies of Cobb and Ruether, this dissertation utilizes the idea of creative synthesis in process thought as a method to fusion the two ecotheologies into one possible process-feminist ecotheology, which synthesizes the metaphysical conceptualization of process theology and the social-political analysis of ecofeminist theology. Creative synthesis is entrusted with the spirit of seeking growth, and the theological task of process ecofeminism is the refinement of religious language and the stretching of imagination; therefore this dissertation is expected to contribute a betterment for both the ecologies of the Cobb and Ruether as well.Furthermore, as a study triggered in the context of China, this dissertation extends the discussion over process-feminist ecotheology to Chinese Christian research. In regards to the scenario of the state-led sinicization of religions in China, the conclusion of this thesis suggests that the inclusion of process theology and ecofeminist theology may evoke the concerns of Chinese Christian theology on social issues and may also inspire the development of a more justice-focused Chinese Christian theology that embraces proper criticism of China’s patriarchal culture and authoritarian political regime regarding environmental and feminist issues. Xie, Caihong.Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2019.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 200-220).Abstracts also in Chinese.Title from PDF title page (viewed on 21 May, 2021).Xie, Caihong
Spatial cone activity distribution in diseases of the posterior pole determined by multifocal electroretinography
AbstractThirty patients with a reduced central vision due to diseases of the posterior pole were examined with the VERIS system developed by Sutter and Tran (Vis Res 1992;32:433–446) to characterize the topography of electroretinographic (ERG) changes in comparison to the results in 30 normal volunteers. Diagnoses included Stargardt’s macular dystrophy (SMD, n=10), age-related macular degeneration (AMD, n=5), cone dystrophy (CD, n=5), central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO, n=5), and autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA, n=5). The 61 local responses obtained from each subject were grouped by eccentricity to form five concentric rings. The foveal ERG, originating from a central area of 2° radius, was non-recordable or markedly diminished in all patients except those with optic atrophy, where amplitudes were found to be in the normal range. In patients with advanced stages of SMD, functional defects were larger and involved more peripheral areas than in patients with early stages of SMD or with AMD. A reduction of response amplitude even in the most peripheral ring (17–30.5° eccentricity) was found in cone dystrophies and—moderately—in patients with advanced SMD and central retinal vein occlusion only. Prolonged implicit times were found in all but the patients in early stages of SMD and they were maximal in patients with CRVO. This study shows that the multifocal ERG (MFERG) can contribute to differential diagnosis of retinal diseases of the posterior pole especially in cases with a normal photopic Ganzfeld ERG
PKCα Is Essential for the Proper Activation and Termination of Rod Bipolar Cell Response
PURPOSE. Protein kinase (PKC)-alpha is abundant in retinal bipolar cells. This study was performed to explore its role in visual processing. METHODS. PKC alpha-knockout (Prkca(-/-)) mice and control animals were examined by using electroretinography (ERG), light microscopy, and immunocytochemistry. RESULTS. The Prkca(-/-) mice showed no signs of retinal degeneration up to 12 months of age, but ERG measurements indicated a decelerated increase in the ascending limb of the scotopic (rod-sensitive) b-wave as well as a delayed return to baseline. These results suggest that PKC alpha is an important modulator that affects bipolar cell signal transduction and termination. Confocal microscopy of retinal sections showed that PKC alpha co-localized with calbindin, which indicates a PKC alpha localization in close proximity to the horizontal cell terminals. In addition, the implicit time of the ERG c-wave originating from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the recovery of photoreceptors from bleaching conditions were substantially faster in the knockout mice than in the wild-type control animals. CONCLUSIONS. These results suggest that PKC alpha is a modulator of rod-bipolar cell function by accelerating glutamate-driven signal transduction and termination. This modulation is of importance in the switch between scotopic and photopic vision. Furthermore, PKC alpha seems to play a role in RPE function.
