The role of self-healing coatings on soft polymer fibers

This study designed a synthetic system modeled after the byssal thread structure in order to isolate the origins of their unique self-healing mechanical properties. PDMS fibers were coated with metal-coordination bonds crosslinked PEG gels and their mechanical properties were tested with uniaxial tension tests. The synthetic system achieved a similar behavior to that of the natural mussel fibers, showing that a thin stiff coating on a soft polymer fiber can have a dramatic effect on its mechanical behavior. The coated fibers were much stiffer at small strains than the uncoated PDMS. The linear elastic region was followed by a distinct yield stress, which indicated the coating beginning to fracture. At high strains, when the coating had failed catastrophically, the PDMS behavior dominated. The coatings were healed though hydration in a humid environment and were then able to recover their stiffness similar to mussel byssal threads.by Inbar Yamin.S.B

Hochschild homology for C_n -equivariant things

    No full text
After an overview of Hochschild homology and topological Hochschild homology, I will talk about about the twisted versions of these that can be defined in the presence of an action of a finite cyclic group. I will discuss joint work with Adamyk, Gerhardt, Hess, and Kong in which we develop a theoretical framework and computational tools for these twisted Hochschild homology theories.Non UBCUnreviewedAuthor affiliation: Columbia UniversityPostdoctora

Isovariant homotopy theory and fixed point invariants

    No full text
An isovariant map is an equivariant map between GG-spaces which strictly preserves isotropy groups. We consider an isovariant analogue of Klein--Williams equivariant intersection theory for a finite group GG. We prove that under certain reasonable dimension and codimension conditions on HH-fixed subspaces (for HGH\leq G), the fixed points of a self-map of a compact smooth GG-manifold can be removed isovariantly if and only if the equivariant Reidemeister trace of the map vanishes. In doing so, we study isovariant maps between manifolds up to isovariant homotopy, yielding an isovariant Whitehead's theorem. In addition, we speculate on the role of isovariant homotopy theory in distinguishing manifolds up to homeomorphism.Comment: 28 pages, fixed a gap in a previous proof and revised the paper according to referee comment

Equivariant nonabelian Poincar\'e duality and equivariant factorization homology of Thom spectra

    No full text
In this paper, we study genuine equivariant factorization homology and its interaction with equivariant Thom spectra, which we construct using the language of parametrized higher category theory. We describe the genuine equivariant factorization homology of Thom spectra, and use this description to compute several examples of interest. A key ingredient for our computations is an equivariant nonabelian Poincar\'e duality theorem, in which we prove that factorization homology with coefficients in a GG-space is given by a mapping space. We compute the Real topological Hochschild homology (THRTHR) of the Real bordism spectrum MURMU_\mathbb{R} and of the equivariant Eilenberg--MacLane spectra HF2H\underline{\mathbb{F}}_2 and HZ(2)H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{(2)}, as well as factorization homology of the sphere S2σS^{2\sigma} with coefficients in these Eilenberg--MacLane spectra. In Appendix B, Jeremy Hahn and Dylan Wilson compute THR(HZ)THR(H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}).Comment: Appendix by Jeremy Hahn and Dylan Wilso

The following article presents some reflections on the relationship between the school system and LGBTQ+phobic violence practices in schools, using as a basis for reflection the author\u27s experience as a primary school teacher, as well as thoughts articulated from debates and speeches within and outside the LGBTQ+ movement.O artigo a seguir traz algumas reflexões a respeito das relações entre o sistema escolar e as práticas de violência LGBTQ+fóbica na escola, usando como base para reflexão a experiência da autora como docente do ensino básico bem como pensamentos articulados a partir de debates e falas dentro da militância LGBTQ+ e fora dela

Bamboo in the Circular Economy: The potential of bamboo in a zero-waste, low-carbon future

    No full text
In short, bamboo offers an available, scaleable circular solution to current, linear models of production and consumption. This report should provide policy makers, donors and business investors with a greater understanding of bamboo’s huge potential in the circular economy.Environmental Technology and Desig

    Elizabeth Bowen: Impressionism and Characterization

    No full text
[missing pages 34-45]Elizabeth Bowen's merit as a writer lies in her style. She depicts people and places and British upper middle class life impressionistically. The impressionistic quality of her characterization and description is the central concern of this thesis. Bowen's use of the subject of love and marriage as a theme is explored and is approached by dividing the broad topic into certain more specific themes. The author's use of death as an impressionistic tool, her description of environment, and the uniqueness of her language, provide additional topics for investigation. Although the small body of criticism on Elizabeth Bowen deals extensively with her treatment of character and her descriptive style, nothing to my knowledge has been said about how her impressionistic technique relies on a sense of isolation. The way characters, author, and reader function in isolation from each other is a consideration that underlies this dissertation's examination of Bowen's fiction.Master of Arts (MA
