Kiss of the Death in Czech fine Art 1895-1918

In this bachelor's thesis, I will present theme of a kiss in different perspective other than classic kiss of love, between a man and a woman. I will deal with the kiss as a sign of death. I focus on Czech modern art in the years 1895 - 1918. Kiss, in this unusual meaning, we can find, for example in the form of the so called angel's kiss, signifying the departure of the soul to the other world. We observe this scene in the painting Světice by Josef Mandl from 1905, besides the painting itself, we will explain the symbol of the deadly angel's kiss as such. The second chapter of the work refers to the key topic related to the kiss of death, the subject of Judas kiss. In Christianity, specifically in the New Testament, Judas Iscariot marks Christ with his kiss, thereby condemning him to death. This theme can symbolize not only death but especially betrayal. In Czech modern art, it can be analyzed in the painting of the same name by Jan Konůpek from 1912. I dedicate the last chapter of the work to a frequent symbolic theme, the kiss of death in the form of a kiss by skeleton. This theme, also popular in Edvard Munch's work, resonates in Czech art in the work of Bohumil Kubišta, The Kiss of Death, from 1912. The method of my work will be the description and analysis of the mentioned works and their..

Poslední kapitolu práce věnuji častému symbolistnímu motivu a to polibku smrti v podobě políbení smrtkou. Tento motiv, oblíbený i u Edvarda Muncha, v českém umění rezonuje v díle Bohumila Kubišty, Polibek smrti, z roku 1912. Metodou práce bude popis a analýza uvedených děl a jejich komparace s dobovými uměleckými vlivy a výtvarnými historickými paralelami.Ústav dějin křesťanského uměníInstitute of Christian Art HistoryCatholic Theological FacultyKatolická teologická fakult

Armament and Society in the Mirror of the Avar Archaelogy The Transdanubia-Phenomenon Revisited

    No full text
One of the most significant problems of the A var archaeology is the question of Germanic (mainly Gepidic) continuity in Transdanubia. In my paper I would like to make some comments on the so-called Transdanubia-phenomenon of the Early A var Carpathian Basin based on the analysis of weapon-combinations found in six cemeteries of Eastern Transdanubia. I intend to answer the following questions: I. How far the weapon-combinations of the East-Transdanubian cemeteries of the early Avar Period (568-650) are identical or similar to the general picture of Avar armament drawn by contemporary cemeteries? 2. Are the weapon-combinations or armament of these cemeteries similar to that of the earlier Gepidic and Langobardic sites from the early 6th centuries or to the contemporary Germanic (Alemannic, Frank or Bavarian) cemeteries of the present-day Germany? As a result, the early A var cemeteries of Transdanubia are characterized by the relatively high number of close-combat weapons compared to other sites of the Avar Khaganate. However, comparing to Merovingian sites the burials containing only close-combat weapons are very low and in most of the cases the weapon-combinations characteristic to this culture is missing
