    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Motor Networks in Perinatal Stroke

    Perinatal stroke is a focal brain injury that causes lifelong disability, including hemiparetic cerebral palsy. Arterial and venous strokes can both damage motor pathways. However, they differ in location and timing, potentially leading to distinct mechanisms of developmental plasticity that determine motor outcome. Existing models of post-stroke neuroplasticity lack an understanding of the functional networks that ultimately determine motor function. This study used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine motor network functional connectivity patterns in perinatal stroke patients and to determine if there is a relationship between the functional connection strength and motor outcome. Significant differences in motor network connections were observed between stroke patients and healthy control subjects. No significant relationship was observed between functional connection strength and motor outcome scores. The results of this study serve as a foundation to better understand how resting-state functional imaging can assess motor function and the effects of interventional post-stroke therapies

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Corticospinal Tract Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Motor Function in Children following Perinatal Stroke

    Perinatal stroke causes most hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Understanding developmental motor plasticity after perinatal injury is key to developing new therapies. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) facilitates this by interrogating functional white matter tracts (e.g. corticospinal tract, CST) but is not well studied in perinatal stroke. Our aim was to quantify CST integrity following perinatal stroke with DTI, evaluating different methodologies and correlations to motor outcome. Twenty-six children (Alberta Perinatal Stroke Project) underwent standardized DTI. Fiber tracking across different CST sections and ROI analysis compared CST diffusion variable (FA/AD/RD/MD) ratios (lesioned/non-lesioned). Correlations with validated motor outcome measures (AHA, MA, PSOM) were sought. DTI quantified differences in all CST diffusion parameters. Decreased FA and increased RD in the lesioned CST demonstrated the most robust correlations with motor outcomes. Analysis of defined CST subtracts may offer advantages over traditional DTI techniques. CST DTI carries both clinical and research utility in perinatal stroke

    The Impact of Perinatal Stroke on Parents and Families

    In this dissertation, I examined the parental and familial impact of raising a child with perinatal stroke. This was accomplished through three carefully planned studies that used a population-based perinatal stroke research cohort and survey methodology. In the first study, the APSP Parental Outcome Measure (POM) was developed to assess the psychosocial impact of raising a child with perinatal stroke, including quantifiable measures of guilt and blame. The results provided strong evidence for the POM’s psychometric properties among a sample of parents of children with perinatal stroke. More specifically, evidence was gathered for the POM’s internal consistency, test-retest reliability, concurrent validity, convergent validity, incremental validity, and factor structure. In the second study, the psychosocial impact of raising a child with perinatal stroke was examined. Mothers of children with perinatal stroke were compared with mothers of children with typical development and fathers of children with perinatal stroke on measures of well-being. The results illustrated that the majority of mothers of children with perinatal stroke were indistinguishable from controls. However, mothers of children with moderate and severe conditions had worse outcomes on measures of depression, quality of life, marital satisfaction, and family functioning. Furthermore, mothers of children with perinatal stroke had similar or slightly worse outcomes than fathers with the most pronounced differences in their anxiety symptoms and feelings of guilt. In the third study, predictors of parent and family outcomes were examined, along with mediators and moderators, in order to better understand the process of adaptation to raising a child with perinatal stroke. The results showed that child and psychosocial variables predicted parent and family outcomes. Mores specifically, condition severity, social support, anxiety symptoms, and blame independently predicted caregiver depression, while condition severity, stress levels, and marital quality independently predicted family functioning. An evaluation of mediators and moderators yielded evidence that parental blame mediates the relationship between condition severity and caregiver depression. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that raising a child with perinatal stroke increases parents’ risk for psychosocial morbidity. However, a large portion of parents demonstrate resiliency, and a complex interplay of factors contribute to the condition’s parental and familial impact

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
