Bisher gibt es jedoch nur wenig empirische Forschung über den Schutz und die Verletzung der akademischen Freiheit weltweit. Der vorliegende Band adressiert diese Forschungslücke, indem er Forschungsrichtlinien für Länderfallstudien sowie vier beispielhafte Studien vorstellt. Neben den Kapiteln zu akademischer Freiheit in Ägypten, Brasilien, Irland und Russland enthält das Buch auch eine Bestandsaufnahme der verfügbaren Datenquellen und gibt Anleitungen zur Nutzung und Kontextualisierung dieser Daten. Die hier vorgestellten Forschungsrichtlinien und Fallstudien sind das Ergebnis einer internationalen Zusammenarbeit. Gemeinsam versuchen die Autoren, die systematische und vergleichbare empirische Forschung zur akademischen Freiheit zu fördern. No full textInternational human rights law protects the freedom indispensable for scientific research – a prerequisite for innovation and the pursuit of knowledge. However, empirical research on the protection and violation of academic freedom remains scarce. This volume seeks to fill that gap by introducing case study guidelines as well as four sample case studies in which the authors applied these guidelines in their research on academic freedom in Brazil, Egypt, Ireland, and Russia. The book also includes an inventory of available data sources on academic freedom, providing guidance on how to utilize and contextualize these data in country-level assessments.
The research guidelines and case studies presented here are the result of an international, collaborative endeavor. Schutzbedürftige oder Sicherheitsrisiko? Anfechtungen des Asylrechts im deutschen Diskurs über russische Deserteure und Kriegsdienstverweigerer
No full textThis study examines the contestations of asylum law in Germany with regard to Russian deserters and conscientious objectors. This study utilizes Contestation Theory, which suggests that even internationally recognized norms such as human rights can be challenged and contested by various actors, for example when security policy and human rights considerations are weighed against each other. A corpus analysis of texts from the German media, published between February 24, 2022, and December 31, 2023, reveals a complex landscape of contestations, including both discursive and behavioral challenges to the asylum law. Discursive contestations include statements and arguments made by politicians and civil society organizations that challenge the asylum law or its application to Russian deserters and conscientious objectors. Behavioral contestations, on the other hand, refer to actions and decisions taken by relevant actors, such as the German government, that affect the asylum process or the protection of Russian deserters and conscientious objectors. The study shows that the low rate of positive asylum decisions for male Russian nationals of military age since February 2022 has significant implications for the protection of Russian deserters and conscientious objectors in Germany. By including behavioral contestations, such as actions and decisions of relevant actors, this study provides a comprehensive picture of the contestations of asylum law in Germany. The study also highlights the importance of affirmations, which are statements or actions that support and reinforce the asylum law and its application to Russian
deserters and conscientious objectors. Affirmations are often made by human rights organizations and individuals who advocate for the protection of Russian deserters and conscientious objectors. By examining both contestations and affirmations found in the texts from the German media, this study provides a nuanced understanding of the various contestations regarding the asylum law in Germany. The results of this study suggest that the asylum law in Germany is not challenged in its validity, but rather that there are challenging perspectives on the implications of the asylum law for Russian deserters and conscientious objectors. The study also highlights the need for further research on the discourses in other EU member states to provide scientifically sound statements on the protection of Russian deserters
and conscientious objectors within the EU. Ultimately, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics surrounding asylum law and the protection of individuals who are fleeing persecution or war

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
