    Theology in suspense : how the detective fiction of P.D. James provokes theological thought

James provokes her readers to think theologically. I present evidence from the body of James’s work, including her detective fiction that features the Detective Adam Dalgliesh, as well as her other novels, autobiography, and non-fiction work. I also present a brief history of detective fiction. This history provides the reader with a better understanding of how P.D James is influenced by the detective genre as well as how she stands apart from the genre’s traditions. This dissertation relies on an interview that I conducted with P.D. James in November, 2008. During the interview, I asked James how Christianity has influenced her detective fiction and her responses greatly contribute to this dissertation. However, James’s novels should be interpreted and explored in the manner that they are received by the reader. How the reader receives and responds to the novels, not only how James writes the novels, is what causes her stories to provoke theological thinking. By examining Christian symbolism that is present in setting, character, the Detective Adam Dalgliesh, and plot, this dissertation seeks to assert that James contributes to a theological conversation through her popular detective fiction

    Exploring the plutonic-volcanic link: a zircon U-Pb, Lu-Hf and O isotope study of paired volcanic and granitic units from southeastern Australia

    The relationship between plutonic and volcanic rocks is central to understanding the geochemical evolution of silicic magma systems, but it is clouded by ambiguities associated with unravelling the plutonic record. Here we report an integrated U-Pb, O and Lu-Hf isotope study of zircons from three putative granitic-volcanic rock pairs from the Lachlan Fold Belt, southeastern Australia, to explore the connection between the intrusive and extrusive realms. The data reveal contrasting petrogenetic scenarios for the S- and I-type pairs. The zircon Hf-O isotope systematics in an I-type dacite are very similar to those of their plutonic counterpart, supporting an essentially co-magmatic relationship between these units. The elevated ?18 O of zircons in these I-type rocks confirm a significant supracrustal source component. The S-type volcanic rocks are not the simple erupted equivalents of the granites, although the extrusive and plutonic units can be related by open-system magmatic evolution. Zircons in the S-type rocks define covariant ?Hf -?18 O arrays that attest to mixing or assimilation processes between two components, one being the Ordovician metasedimentary country rocks, the other either an I-type magma or a mantle-derived magma. The data are consistent with models involving incremental melt extraction from relatively juvenile magmas undergoing open-system differentiation at depth, followed by crystal-liquid mixing upon emplacement in shallow magma reservoirs, or upon eruption. The latter juxtaposes crystals with markedly different petrogenetic histories and determines whole-rock geochemical and textural properties. This scenario can explain the puzzling decoupling between the bulk rock isotope and geochemical compositions commonly observed for granite suites

    U-Pn geochronology of deformed metagranites in central Sutherland, Scotland: evidence for widespread late Silurian metamorphism and ductile deformation of the Moine Supergroup during the Caledonian orogeny

    Within the Caledonides of central Sutherland, Scotland, the Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Moine Supergroup record NW-directed D2 ductile thrusting and nappe assembly, accompanied by widespread tight-to-isoclinal folding and amphibolite-facies metamorphism. A series of metagranite sheets which were emplaced and penetratively deformed during D2 have been dated using SHRIMP UâPb geochronology. Zircon ages of 424 8 Ma (Vagastie Bridge granite), 420 6 Ma (Klibreck granite) and 429 11 Ma (Strathnaver granite) are interpreted to date emplacement, and hence regional D2 deformation, during mid- to late Silurian time. Titanite ages of 413 3 Ma (Vagastie Bridge granite) and 416 3 Ma (Klibreck granite) are thought to date post-metamorphic cooling through a blocking temperature of c. 550â 500 8C. A mid- to late Silurian age for D2 deformation supports published models that have viewed the internal ductile thrusts of this part of the orogen as part of the same kinematically linked system of forelandpropagating thrusts as the marginal Moine Thrust Zone. The new data contrast with previous interpretations that have viewed the dominant structures and metamorphic assemblages within the Moine Supergroup as having formed during the early to mid-Ordovician Grampian arcâcontinent orogeny. The mid-to late Silurian D2 nappe stacking event in Sutherland is probably a result of the collision of Baltica with the Scottish segment of Laurentia

    Isotopic modelling of Archean crustal evolution from comagmatic zircon-apatite pairs

    Available online 14 September 2021The composition of Earth's early crust is challenging to assess as only a fragmented record remains. As a consequence, deciphering the composition of early crust as a means to understand early processes on our planet often relies on the isotopic composition of resistive minerals. Here we present a new tool for investigating igneous petrogenesis and crustal evolution by combining 87Sr/86Sr measurements of apatite inclusions with U–Pb and Hf isotope analysis of their host zircon crystals. This approach takes advantage of the complementary inverse fractionation behaviour of Rb/Sr and Lu/Hf, and the cogenetic host/inclusion relationship, to link the three isotopic systems and construct an evolution model in triple isotope space. By applying this triple isotope system modelling to Mesoarchean igneous rocks from the Akia terrane in SW Greenland, we reconstruct a bulk SiO2 composition of 63-68 wt% for the precursor source crust and infer an average crustal residence time of 300–350 Ma. Our modelling implicates involvement of intermediate to felsic Paleo-Eoarchean crust in the genesis of voluminous 3.0 Ga magmatic rocks of the Akia terrane, one of the largest components of the Archean North Atlantic Craton. A further outcome of this approach is the ability to place more robust empirical constraints on the Lu/Hf ratio of the precursor crust by comparison of the modelling output to a global whole-rock dataset.     O presente projeto pretende apresentar uma proposta de tradução de dois contos integrados na obra de P.D. James Sleep No More: Six Murderous Tales, publicada em 2017, e procura desenvolver uma reflexão acerca dos desafios da tradução de ficção policial nos dias de hoje. No seu início, este tipo de ficção foi desvalorizado, visto como literatura inferior. Porém, uma evolução positiva tem vindo a ocorrer nas últimas décadas, encaminhando o subgénero para uma posição cada vez mais respeitada. Assim, partindo da própria prática da tradução de ficção policial, o interesse pela análise deste fenómeno surgiu com a obra da autora britânica P.D. James, e com o recurso às abordagens e estratégias de tradução de diversos investigadores dos Estudos de Tradução. O projeto pretende dar ênfase ao contributo de P.D. James para uma visão crescentemente positiva do policial. A reflexão incide nos desafios emergentes desta nova visão, e analisam-se as dificuldades concretas que se levantaram à tradução, assim como as estratégias utilizadas e soluções encontradas. Considera-se que este projeto é pertinente para os Estudos de Tradução, na medida em que o policial é um dos subgéneros literários mais consumidos e, consequentemente, traduzidos no mundo. Por essa razão, é essencial que haja mais reflexão e investigação no campo da tradução acerca deste tipo de literatura, sendo que é pela tradução que estas obras literárias se disseminam, algo que traz uma grande responsabilidade ao tradutor.This project aims to present a proposal for the translation of two short stories by P.D. James from the work Sleep No More: Six Murderous Tales, published in 2017, and seeks to reflect on the challenges of translating crime fiction today. At its beginning, this type of fiction was devalued, seen as inferior literature. However, an interesting and positive evolution has been taking place in the last couple of decades, leading the genre to an increasingly respected position. An interest in analysing this phenomenon arose, starting from the actual practice of translating crime fiction, with the British author P.D. James, and using the approaches and translation strategies of various researchers in the field of Translation Studies. The project aims to emphasize P.D. James' contribution to the increasingly positive view of the crime fiction genre. It will reflect on the challenges emerging from this new vision, and analyse the difficulties that have arisen in translation, as well as the strategies used, and solutions found. I believe that this project is relevant to the field of Translation Studies, as crime fiction is one of the most widely consumed and, consequently, translated literary genres in the world. For this reason, it is essential that there is more reflection and research in the field of translation about this type of literature, since it is through translation that these literary works are disseminated, something that imposes a great responsibility on the translator

    Lu-Hf, Sm-Nd, and U-Pb isotopic coupling and decoupling in apatite

    Available online 12 October 2022Apatite is a useful geochronological tool due to its common occurrence and incorporation of a variety of radioactive parent isotopes during crystallisation. However, an understanding of the geological conditions recorded by each of these isotopic systems in apatite is necessary for their effective application to geological problems. In this study, U–Pb, Sm–Nd, and Lu–Hf dates for apatite grains from samples of 3.0 Ga TTG gneisses in the Akia terrane of the North Atlantic Craton (south-western Greenland) were obtained in order to better understand the conditions under which isotopic re-equilibration in apatite is achieved. This isotopic data records at least two thermotectonic events subsequent to the initial magmatic crystallisation of these rocks. Whereas the Lu–Hf and Sm–Nd isotopic systems in these apatites record a regional high temperature metamorphic event at ̃2.7 Ga, the U–Pb system records a milder thermal event at 1.7 Ga. This decoupling of the U–Pb from the Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf systems in apatite reflects a difference in closure temperature. The regional thermal effects of the 1.7 Ga Nagssugtoqidian orogeny in adjacent parts of the North Atlantic Craton resulted in partial to complete reequilibration of the U–Pb systems in apatite across the Akia terrane but were insufficient to cause open system behaviour of Sm–Nd or Lu–Hf. The indistinguishable apatite Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf ages produced in each analysed sample suggest that these systems are similarly susceptible to isotopic re-equilibration. The older ages produced by the Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf systems relative to U–Pb in apatite demonstrate that the former are more robust and thus more likely to faithfully record high temperature events than the U–Pb system.Jack Gillespie, Christopher L.     This paper attempts to evaluate whether Albanian rural social structure has changed to the extent that individual rights and protection of those rights have become important policy questions. If the evaluation suggests that rural Albanians retain the set of family-oriented norms and beliefs that are based primarily on patriarchalism and patrilineal inheritance, we must address the following questions: How appropriate is the mixture of western law that emulates individualistic notions of property rights with the customary family-tenure system of rural Albania? What are the likely problems that could emerge during the transition given a potential conflict between family notions of ownership and individual notions of ownership? This paper discusses five broad issues: the contemporary importance of family ownership, the role of the patriarch, the contemporary inheritance procedures, the vulnerability of specific groups of women, and the structure of the Albanian family.
