A Note on Velar Nasals: The Case of Uradhi
In the past few years, a number of articles have argued that the default articulator for consonants is Coronal (see, for example, Kiparsky 1985; Iverson and Kim 1987:187; Shaw 1988; Avery and Rice 1989; and the contributors to Paradis and Prunet 1991). Paradis and Prunet (1993b), with a view to strengthening and formalizing this proposal, have expressed the Weak Coronal Hypothesis (WCH) in (1).</jats:p
The Inadequacy of Filters and Faithfulness in Loanword Adaptation
The objective of this paper is twofold. First, it aims to show that segment deletion in borrowings is largely predictable, and that this predictability might be problematic for a filter-based framework since, as we will see, it entails that phonological processes are visible to phonological constraints. For instance, it is at odds with a filter-based framework such as Optimality Theory (OT; Prince & Smolensky 1993 and McCarthy & Prince 1993), where constraints are in fact "filters", i.e. surface constraints, which do not have access to the processes of the phonological component or the intermediate forms they generate since, by definition, filters deal with final outputs only. Second, this paper will demonstrate that ill-formed segments contained in borrowings are adapted, i.e. recast into a different shape (85.2% of cases), or left unadapted (10.7% of cases) - if these are imports - instead of being deleted. Phonologically-induced segment deletion represents only 2.3% of cases, a fact which is attributed to a principle of the Theory of Constraints and Repair Strategies (TCRS; Paradis 1988a,b), the Preservation Principle. It will be shown that, although the Preservation Principle and Faithfulness (Parse and Fill) in OT seem comparable, they make indeed different predictions. In the view of Faithfulness, the optimal output (candidate) is the one which has undergone the least (segment) deletion, i.e. the one whose segments are all "parsed" (realised), in addition to being the one which has undergone the least (segment) epenthesis (Fill). In other words, the Faithfulness constraints (Parse and Fill) establish that the best candidate is the one which is as close as possible to its input. OT treats both Faithfulness constraints on a par in the sense that their ranking with respect to one another - as is the case with any other constraint in this framework - is determined on language-specific grounds, not universal ones. This means that, statistically, segment deletion in loanwords across languages should be observed as often as segment insertion, a prediction which is not empirically supported. The definitive version of this paper was published in Current Trends in Phonology: Models and Methods (1996)Paradis, Carole.
The article is an attempt to classify the novel of Gabrielle Gourdeau entitled “Maria Chapdelaine ou le Paradis retrouvé”, which retells the story of the emblematic character of French-Canadian literature (formerly portrayed by Louis Hémon in his novel “Maria Chapdelaine”). With the use of the theory of “hypertext” by Gérard Genette, the author shows that Gourdeau does not merely “continue” Hémon’s narrative but re-visions and re-invents the character of Maria Chapdelaine, by means of such techniques as transposition, transtylization and transvalorization.

The early fourteenth-century Voie d’Enfer et de Paradis by Pierre de l’Hôpital (of which the first critical edition is currently being prepared) has drawn only passing interest from critics, in spite of its importance for the development of the genre of the allegorical voyage. This paper aims to locate the still unedited work attributed to Pierre de l’Hôpital within the oitanic literature, specifically highlighting the differences that distinguish it from other literary representatives of the journey through the Afterlife and suggesting a possible intertextual link between the text typology of the Voie d’Enfer et de Paradis and that of the Songe d’Enfer by Raoul de Houdenc. Besides, after confirming the date of composition and the vast Fortleben that concerned the Voie, as well as the dynamics of reception that have influenced its fruition and subsequent theatrical re-writings, we will offer first precise account of all the four manuscript witnesses conserving the text. Moreover, we will also try to shed more light on the possible social identity and the origin of the author, whose figure has been richly miniated in some illuminations decorating a witness of the first re-adaptation of the text
This work is a critical and commented edition of Philippe Sollers's Paradis. It is divided into two parts. The first one is a study of the text. At first, the work is situated in the novelistic genre, notably through the analysis of enunciation. Then there is the examination of its mode of publication and of the status of the reader. The body of the study tries to understand the vision the author has on the subjectivity of the individual, and its impact on its productions social as well as linguistic, before investigating his metaphysical progress through theology, language and writing. The last part studies some of the process of this writing. The conclusion will try to explain the evolution of the author, from the avant-garde novel towards more classical novels. The second part is the annotated edition. It contains 2516 notes the purpose of which is to make the cultural and literary references of the text accessible, and to clarify the literal sense and to suggest interpretations.PARIS4-BU Serpente (751052129) / SudocSudocFranceF
This contribution offers a comprehensive study of the manuscript tradition of Pierre de l'Hôpital's Voie d'Enfer et de Paradis, within the limits of the four witnesses bearing the version of the poem which is attributable for certain to this author. The ecdotical analysis provides a clear picture of the stemmatic type that governed the transmission of the text. Liliana Corobcaʹs Novels “Un an în Paradis” and “Kinderland” in Critical Reading from a Thematic Perspective
This article presents how the novels Un an în Paradis and Kinderland have been received by critics from a thematic perspective. Identity, memory, alienation, childhood are themes highlighted in the novels under review, which contribute to the representation of a real, believable world.
Liliana Corobcaʹs prose is defined by narratively constructed worlds, worlds that expose taboo subjects, that illustrate limit-situations, that sustain a marginal identity.
The author stands out in Romanian literature as a distinct voice, which surprises by the chosen themes, by the style of writing, by the constructed fictional worlds, which complement the known real world. She is a writer who looks for real events to expose fictionally. Her prose is the result of a interplay between fiction and non-fiction. The authenticity of her writing is sustained by the fictionalization of individual or collective memory
The author studies five sarcophagal tombs found not far from Toulouse. The funerary furniture found there can be dated to the middle of the 6th century A.D. The presence of these five isolated burial places perhaps argues in favour of a thinly-settled population on the outskirts of the city of Toulouse in the late Middle Ages.L'auteur étudie cinq tombes en sarcophages qui ont été découvertes non loin de Toulouse.
