H.C. was supported by a fellowship from the former Flemish Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology, now Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship (VLAIO, grant no. 141328). Fieldwork was supported by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), under expedition grant no. AWI_PS106/1_2-00 and the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) under its Statutory Research Task Nature & Environment WOT-04-009-047.04. We thank Captain Thomas Wunderlich and the crew of RV 'Polarstern' expedition PS106/2 for their support. We are very grateful to everyone who collected samples, that is Nils Koschnick, Jennifer Steffen, Erik Sulanke, Kim Vane and Susanne Fuchs with the assistance of Elisa Bravo Rebolledo, Giulia Castellani and Julia Ehrlich. We sincerely thank Birte Matthiessen, Paul E. Renaud and 2 anonymous reviewers for their constructive comments that helped improve the paper. Polar cod were sampled and processed according to and within the laws, guidelines and policies of the German Animal Welfare Organisation; no specific permissions were required. The fish collected are neither endangered nor protected in the coastal waters of the Svalbard Archipelago. Polar cod were sacrificed immediately after sampling. 11. An Arrangement of Silence
The importance of silence for contemplation in the medieval monastery is well known. This chapter examines an alternative silence - that of withholding information. Like many letter collections of the twelfth century, those ascribed to Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) may have presented a selective image of their author. The lacuna in the documentation of Anselm’s first political exile raises the question of the extent to which monastic silence and the act of letter collecting are intertwined. Thus I analyse the arrangements of two such letter collections from the perspective of a ‘macro-text’ - an independent narrative. More specifically, I argue that these collections render an image of Anselm that idealizes silence as the virtue of an archbishop living in a state of monastic renunciation.</p
Una lectura iconográfica de Descartes
Is there a "true" portrait of Descartes? While we know, with a few exceptions, who painted or engraved Descartes' portrait, we recognize Descartes without knowing if the paintings and engravings portray him "truly." What do Hellemans and the unknown author of "Descartes as Faust" have in common with Weenix's painting? The answer is unequivocal: the books; to such an extent that the book serves as an attribute. The icon of modern philosophy is the one that hides to think; it is the one who, from the secret behind the mask, looks at the viewer and forces him, under the prism of iconography, to return from the world of representation to the letter of the text.¿Hay algún retrato “verdadero” de Descartes?
Exploring Substance Discourse: An Analysis of Reddit Posts Across Substance Types, Canadian Cities, and Political Standings
Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) have developed into a global epidemic, creating a significant burden worldwide. The SUD crisis persists due to limited awareness, treatment accessibility misconceptions, stigmatization, and prejudice against individuals who use substances, particularly if they are diagnosed with SUD. Public attitudes and stigmatizing beliefs towards individuals with mental health and SUDs are shaped by the language utilized to label individuals with these disorders. As such, emerging movements from people with lived/living experience (PWLLE) suggest changing the language we use to speak about individuals who use substances, e.g., person-first versus identity-first language. While the conceptual lens of stigma has been developed through research, the symbolic forms of stigma, such as language, are not as often updated. Given that stigma is recognized as a social and cultural process that is continuously evolving to reflect changes in substance use patterns, the lexicon used to determine stigmatizing language may shift with changes in preferred substances and substance use patterns. As such, the aim of this study is to provide an updated list of current stigmatizing terms used to describe substance use or those who use substances, obtained from conversations about substance use on Reddit. In addition, we would like to see how stigmatizing language changes across substance types, major cities in Canada, and their affiliated political parties
