    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Dept. of Biomedical Laboratory Science/박사[한글] Leukotactin-1 (Lkn-1)은 최근에 클론된 CCR1과 CCR3에 결합하는 CC chemokine이다. Lkn-1이 중성구, 단핵구, 림프구의 화학주성제로서 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있으나, 세포내 기전은 명확하게 밝혀지지 않았다. 본 실험에서는 Lkn-1에 의해 유도되는 화학주성 신호전달과정을 이해하기 위해서 CCR1을 발현하는 사람 골수종세포에서 화학주성 활성도를 연구하였다. Lkn-1에 의해 유도되는 화학주성에 관련된 분자들을 조사하기 위해서 세포유주실험을 수행하였다. Gi/Go 단백질의 억제제인 pertussis toxin과 인지질 가수분해효소 C와 단백질 인산화효소 C의 억제제는 Lkn-1에 의해 유도되는 화학주성을 감소시켰다. 특히 단백질 인산화 효소 Cd의 특이적 억제제인 rottlerin은 Lkn-1의 화학주성 활성도를 억제시켰는데, 이것은 Lkn-1의 화학주성 신호전달과정에서 단백질 인산화효소 Cd가 관여하는것을 나타낸다. 인지질 가수분해효소 C와 단백질 인산화효소 C의 활성도는 Lkn-1의 자극에 의해서 증가하였다. 그러나, MEK 억제제인 PD98059는 화학주성 활성도를 억제시키지 않아서 ERK가 관여하지 않는다는 것을 보여주었다. Lkn-1에 의한 화학주성 활성도는 cyclonheximide 와 actinomycin D에 의해서 억제되는데 이는 화학주성에 새로운 단백질의 합성이 필요하다는 것을 나타낸다. 새로운 단백질 합성을 위해서는 전사인자의 활성화가 요구되는데, 이 중에서 가장 잘 알려져 있는 NF-kB가 관련하는지를 조사하였다. NF-kB의 억제제는 화학주성 활성도를 감소시켰고, gel shift assay 결과 Lkn-1의 자극에 의해서 NF-kB의 DNA 결합능력이 증가되었다. 이러한 결과는 Lkn-1에 의한 화학주성 신호전달이 Gi/Go 단백질, 인지질 가수분해효소 C, 단백질 인산화효소 Cd, NF-kB을 거쳐 새로운 단백질합성으로 이어지는것을 나타낸다. Lkn-1이 CCR1에 결합한 후에 일어나는 세포내 신호전달에 대한 연구를 위해서 CCR1을 발현하는 사람골수종 세포주의 신호분자 활성도를 실험하였다. Lkn-1에 의해 자극받은 세포는 시간별로 인산화된 ERK1/2를 증가시켰다. ERK의 활성도는 30분과 12시간에 최고점에 이르렀고, pertussis toxin에 의해서ERK의 활성도가 감소하였다. 인지질 가수분해효소 C와 단백질 인산화효소 Cd의 억제제도 또한 ERK의활성도를 감소시켰다. c-fos, c-myc, egr-1 같은 immediate early response genes은 Lkn-1에 의해 유도되어졌다. Lkn-1이 Gi/Go 단백질, 인지질 가수분해효소, 단백질 인산화효소 Cd를 통하여 ERK를 활성화시키는데 이러한 결과는 세포증식과 분화 그리고 유전자발현조절과 같은 다른 세포내 과정에Lkn-1에 의해 유도되어진 ERK 활성화가 관여할 수 있다는 가능성을 제시한다. [영문] Leukotactin-1 (Lkn-1) is a recently cloned CC-chemokine that binds to the CCR1 and CCR3. Although Lkn-1 has been known to function as a chemoattractant for neutrophil, monocyte and lymphocyte, its cellular mechanism remains unclear. To understand the mechanism of Lkn-1-induced chemotaxis signaling, the chemotactic activities were examined in human osteogenic sarcoma (HOS) cells expressing CCR1. Cell migration experiment was performed to examine the molecules involved in Lkn-1-induced chemotaxis. Pertussis toxin, an inhibitor of Gi/Go protein, and inhibitors of phospholipase C (PLC), and protein kinase C (PKC) blocked Lkn-1-induced chemotaxis. Especially, PKCd specific inhibitor rottlerin inhibited the chemotactic activity of Lkn-1 indicating that Lkn-1-induced chemotaxis signal is tranduced through PKCd. The activities of PLC and PKCd were also enhanced by Lkn-1 stimulation. However, MEK inhibitor PD98059 did not inhibit the chemotaxis induced by Lkn-1 indicating that extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK) pathway is not involved in cell migration. Chemotactic activity of Lkn-1 was inhibited by the treatment of cycloheximide and actinomycin D suggesting that newly synthesized proteins are needed for chemotaxis. The inhibitor of NF-kB inhibited Lkn-1-induced chemotaxis. Results from gel shift assay showed that the DNA binding activity of NF-kB was enhanced by Lkn-1 stimulation, and these results suggest that Lkn-1 transduces the signal through Gi/Go protein, PLC, PKCd, NF-kB and newly synthesized proteins for chemotaxis. To understand the intracellular events following Lkn-1 binding to CCR1, the activities of signaling molecules in response to Lkn-1 were investigated in HOS cells expressing CCR1. Lkn-1-stimulated cells showed elevated phosphorylationof ERK1/2 with a distinct time course. ERK activation was peaked in 30 min and 12 h and pertussis toxin blocked Lkn-1-induced activation of ERK showing biphasic activation of ERK. PLC inhibitor and PKCd specific inhibitor inhibited ERK activation in Lkn-1-stimulated cells. Dominant negative Ras inhibited activation of ERK. Immediate early response genes such as c-fos and c-myc were induced by Lkn-1 stimulation. Lkn-1 affected the cell cycle progression by cyclin D3 induction. These results suggest that Lkn-1 activates the ERK pathway by transducing the signal through Gi/Go protein, PLC, PKCd and Ras, and it may play a role for cell proliferation, differentiation and regulation of gene expression for other cellular processes.ope
