The author revisits some persistent legends of pirates in Maine, verifying some visits, like those of Dixie Bull and the Horn-Decker gang and debunking others, like those of Captain Kidd and Blackbeard. With an in-depth look at whether pirate Sam Bellamy or his colleagues, particularly Paulsgrave Williams and Oliver La Buse, visited the Maine coast

Objets rituels, maladie et transmission, l'emploi de la buse du soufflet par les forgerons moose (Burkina Faso)

The Moose smiths use the « nose of the bellows » pẽbga, to heal a disease located at the end of the intestin (anus and rectum). This disease is said to be caused by damage done to forge by some sort of theft. After an account of the local description of the causes, of the symtoms and of the treatment, the author sets off the analogies that link the human body to the « nose of the bellows » on one hand, and to the iron work on the other hand. She shows that theses analogies are integrated in a coherent way in an ideology clearly defined by the smiths. It deals with theis role as tool producers and as warrants of the agricole activity. The « nose of the bellows » and the disease related to it then become material tools that bring out the forgotten links between powers related to the forge and human beings and, at the same time, the relation between the smiths and the others. Calderoni Lidia. Çetinkaya, Buse S. The Specter of Whiteness: The Racial Psyche in the Short Storiesof Flannery O?Connor, Master?s Thesis, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Belgin Elbir, 110 p.ABSTRACTThis thesis focuses on the questions of guilt and redemption that haunt thewhite Southern community in the U.S. in the post-civil war era, in six stories byFlannery O?Connor. The psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud are used as the maintheoretical approach to analyze the reasons for and consequences of the trauma thatthe white Southern community has experienced. The psychoanalytic concepts of theego-ideal and superego are used to explain how the protagonists are caught up in bothan illusory sense of superiority and the guilt of slavery that accompanies it. The maintheoretical sources are Freud?s works: ?On Narcissism,? ?The Uncanny,? and Totemand Taboo.Alongside Freudian concepts, René Girard?s sociological theory ofscapegoating, which he explains in Violence and the Sacred, is employed to analyzethe issue in relation to the white Southern community as a whole and to emphasize thecollective quality of the experience. The thesis consists of three chapters:In the first chapter, ?the creation of the ego-ideal,? is analyzed in the author?s?The Geranium? and ?Judgement Day.? The illusory sense of white superiority islinked with the creation of the ego-ideal in psychoanalysis. In the second chapter, ?The Superego,? the author?s ?Everything That RisesMust Converge,? and ?The Artificial Nigger? are discussed, using Freud?s essay ?TheUncanny? as the main theoretical source. In the third chapter, ?The Mechanism of Scapegoating,? the author?s storiesentitled ?Revelation,? and ?The Partridge Festival? are analyzed, taking Girard?sViolence and the Sacred and Freud?s Totem and Taboo as the main theoreticalsources.Bu tezde İç Savaş sonrası güney Amerika'yı içine alan ve bunalıma sokan suç ve kurtuluş kavramları, güneyli yazar Flannery O'Connor'ın altı hikayesi: ?The Geranium,? ?Judgement Day,? ?Everything That Rises Must Converge,? ?The Artificial Nigger,? ?Revelation? ve ?The Partridge Festival? 'inde ele alınmıştır.Güneyli beyaz toplumun yaşadığı travmanın sebep ve sonuçlarını incelerken Sigmund Freud'un geliştirdiği psikanalitik kuram esas alınmıştır. ?Ego ideali? ve ?süperego? psikanalitik terimleri, hikayelerdeki başkahramanların üstün beyazlık sanrısı ve buna bağlı olarak gelişen kölelik kurumunun hissettirdiği suçluluk duygusunu açıklamada kullanılmıştır. Kuramın açıklanmasında Freud'un ?Narsisizm Üzerine,? ?Tekinsizlik?? ve Totem ve Tabu eserleri kullanılmıştır.Tezde Freud'un yanısıra Fransız antropolog René Girard'ın eseri Şiddet ve Kutsal'da incelediği günahkeçisi mekanizması esas alınarak hikayelerde incelenen beyaz karakterlerin travmasının toplumsal kökenli olduğu vurgulanmıştır.Tez üç bölümden oluşmaktadır:Birinci bölüm, ?Ego İdeali'nin Oluşumu?nda, yazarın ?The Geranium? ve ?Judgement Day? hikayeleri incelenmiştir.

Corn-bran: Alternative cellulosic filler for polypropylene

In this study, the use-ability of corn bran (CB) as a reinforcing filler in polypropylene (PP) matrix was investigated. The properties of CB/PP composites were compared with wood fiber (WF) filled PP composites. In order to enhance the interfacial adhesion, maleated-PP (PP-g-MAH) (MaPP) was used. The CB/PP and WF/PP composites were compounded in an Xplore laboratory compounder. The CB/PP/MaPP and WF/PP/MaPP composites were characterized by tensile test, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thennogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The morphology investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was shown that corn bran can be an alternative candidate to be used as a reinforcing natural filler source for thermoplastic composites

    No full text
This master thesis reports the research and design activities about designing a new Philips intense pulsed light (IPL) Lumea Prestige hair removal device for generation Z users. Philips invented an Intense pulsed light hair removal device for a painless hair removal experience. However, the new consumers generation Z are coming to the market who are born between 1997 to 2012. Philips would like to see how the IPL device can fit into generation Z consumers. Firstly, research was conducted about the current usability issues of the IPL hair removal device. Secondly, generation Z was selected as the target group because of the current market trend. Thus, user research was conducted about understanding the generation Z personal care characteristics. Contextmapping method was used here for deeper understanding of the users. Next, research was done about finding out how to match the current IPL device insights with the characteristics of the generation Z, and how the Philips IPL device can fit into the generation Z personal care routine. In the end, a design goal was discovered based on the research. Afterwards, co-creation and ideation were conducted for discovering ideas for the design. Moreover, an exploration on shapes was conducted as well. In the end, a new shape and a new design were created for the generation Z users. In the end, usability tests have been conducted with real generation Z participants in order to validate the design goal.Design for Interactio

Model System Studies of Wear Mechanisms of Hard Metal Tools when Cutting CFRP

    No full text
AbstractWithin the publicly-funded ZAFH research project SPANTEC light, the Competence Center for Tribology in Mannheim, Germany, examines the wear mechanisms of hard metal tools when cutting carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic in drilling and milling processes. The research project includes a test series with a tribological model test. The development of a new tribological simulation model system, a modified pin-on-disc system respectively called as edge-on-disc system, for cutting CFRP with hard metal composites is systematically analyzed and presented in this work. With this model system, a new method for tool wear analysis of the tool materials against CFRP is described. As result, there are further findings on the wear mechanism of the hard metal tungsten carbide in cobalt matrix (WC-Co) compared with carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Research parameters for the tribological system in this paper are the WC-Co materials, with their WC-grain size and cobalt content, and the carbon fiber orientation. This study introduces a first approach to determine WC-Co wear compared with a CFRP-specimen, unlike most hard metal wear tests. Furthermore it is shown, that properties of the drilling and milling processes can be adapted by altering the model systems rotating speed and normal force. The results originality is also provided by using a variety of WC grain size classes (sub-μm to approximately 7-9μm grain size) and cobalt contents far above usual CFRP-machining properties to show the wear process between carbon fibers and WC-Co in detail

Policies for Enhancing Public Trust and Avoiding Distrust in Digital Government During Pandemics: Insights from a Systematic Literature Review

    No full text
The coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) has demonstrated the importance of the state capacity and public policy-making process in managing both the pandemic and the resulting crisis. Trust and/or distrust in the relationship between citizens and authorities can determine the success or failure of states in combating pandemics. The goal of this study is to provide insight into trust and distrust in digital government during pandemics by creating an overview of the scattered knowledge. Accordingly, the chapter creates an overview of the factors influencing trust and distrust in digital government in pandemics. The results showed that factors affecting distrust are mostly associated with problems in the interactions between citizens and public authorities, whereas factors affecting trust address governments’ policy responses and public compliance. The level of trust is a dynamic condition that can either be strengthened or broken. A single factor can result in trust for one person and distrust for another person. Surprisingly, trust and distrust can coexist at the same time. Governments must pursue a balance between trust- and distrust-related factors in times of pandemics to derive the dual benefits of trust and distrust.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Information and Communication Technolog

The Algae transported on drifting objects and washed ashore on the Netherlands coast

    No full text
Little attention has been paid till now to the algae, transported to the Netherlands coast on drifting objects. About a century ago T. D. Vrijdag Zijnen and G. Bisschop (near Scheveningen, ± 1845), and L. H. Buse (between Wijk aan Zee and Zandvoort, ± 1840—1847) were the first to pay attention to this subject. The material collected, especially that by the first two investigators, is mentioned in the Prodromus Fl. Bat. (1853). The book of Van Goor (1923) contains a chapter on these algae, in which, however, only few new observations occur. The author is much indebted to Dr Josephine Th. Koster for her kind help, as well as to Dr S. J. v. Ooststroom. The material, collected by Vrijdag Zijnen, Bisschop and Buse is almost completely present in the collections of the ‘Rijksherbarium’ and the ‘Koninklijke Ncderlandse Botanische Vereniging’, Leiden. The material, collected during the last few years has for the greater part been brought together by the present author, and furthermore especially by K. Swennen (Den Helder), J. Stock (Amsterdam), A. Mulder (Haarlem) and P. Leenhouts (Scheveningen). This material belongs to the collection of the Rijksherbarium, Leiden, but most of it is, for the time being, put under the charge of the “Comité ter Bestudering van de Nederlandse Mariene Flora en Fauna” (“Committee on the Netherlands’ Marine Flora and Fauna”) and temporarily preserved in “Het Filiaal”, Leiden
