Oral history of Kien Tam Nguyen, born in 1947 in Cambodia. She lived part of her early years in north Vietnam until 1954 when her family migrated to Saigon, where she completed most of her schooling. As a student she often assisted injured soldiers during the war. She lost a brother during that time period. Her Buddhist faith is a strong part of her life, as she meditates often. After marriage she opened her own hair salon out of her home in Saigon. When the war ended, she was evacuated with her son, while her husband evacuated the country separately. She ended up in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas while he ended up in Camp Pendleton. They were able to reunite the family and resettled in Los Angeles and then Orange county. She co-founded Tam Beauty College with her husband, which later became Advance Beauty College under her children’s management.Recorded Digitall

Minagawa Kien (1734-1807): the Relation between his Meichû and Kien tõyõ

pdfIt is always a moot point, of course, but I think that a case can be made for Meichû to be the most important of Minagawa Kien's many works, in the sense of the most authoritative formulation of his mature thought. The book (6 fascicles) is written in Chinese, and in the lexicographical mode. It consists of over sixty words, i.e. Confucians terms, which are defined and explained with help of many quotations from the Chinese Classics. To judge by the date of Kien's own preface, the book was finished in 1784, but it took another four years before the book appeared in print. It was not the kind of text, however, that would make the author's name a household word all over Japan. That may be the reason why Kien decided to write Kien tôyô. In composition, Kien tôyô partly overlaps with Meichû, and in the book he every now and then refers to the other text. In style, however, the two are completely different. Kien toyo is written in soro-bun, and composed in the form of a number of letters to an otherwise unnamed daimyo. In style and composition, Meichû and Kien tôyô show many resemblances to Ogyû Sorai's Benmei and Sorai-sensei tômonsho, and also the relation between these two texts seems comparable to the relation obtaining between the two compositions by Sorai. In my lecture, I will discuss both the individual texts of Meichû and Kien tôyô, and the inter-textual relations outlined above.conference pape

Using Enhancing our heritage toolkit for assessing management effectiveness of the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve

    No full text
Biosphere reserves operating under the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme aim to achieve three mandate management objectives of conservation, sustainable socio-economic development, and logistic support. The apparent mismatch between the biosphere reserve (BR) concept and implementation reality has led to the call for assessment of management effectiveness as part of a system to support management of sites under the Seville Statutory Framework for the Biosphere Reserves Network since 1995. We used the Enhancing our Heritage Toolkit developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and UNESCO to evaluate the management effectiveness of the Kien Giang Biosphere Reserve (KGBR). A lack of broad understanding for the conceptual model leads to the biosphere reserve concept being essentially an artificially constructed model with little buy-in from agencies of government and limited efforts to pursue an adequate planning and implementation process. The management system established in KGBR lacks operational funding and its staff lacks adequate knowledge of the BR model, but exhibit strong sectoral commitments that cut across the BR approach. Consequently, most of the important values found in the KGBR are ineffectively protected and managed. The case study in Kien Giang suggests that this management effectiveness evaluation tool can be used to assess performance and management outcomes of sites and assist stakeholders in adaptive planning and improving BR performance and effectiveness.https://viurrspace.ca/bitstream/handle/10613/5091/CuongDartHockings.pdf?sequence=3&isAllowed=

Includes bibliographical references and index."Communicating with Memes: Consequences in Post-truth Civilization investigates the consequences of memetic communication, the causes of these consequences, and what action--if any--should be taken in response. Communicating with memes across social media networks has become a commonplace activity in today's world, despite the fact that just years earlier, this mode of communication was a rarity. The rapid adoption of this new mode of communication through ubiquitous social media and device use is resulting in a major transformation of the ways in which we think and behave in our digital world. From the election of Donald Trump, to online harassment and identity theft, to the resurgence of once-eradicated diseases due to the anti-vaxxer movement, Grant Kien analyzes fourteen major consequences of this shift and confronts the question of how to approach these consequences"--Publisher's description.Memes and memetic communication -- Our digital steamworks -- Rehash(tagged) -- Urgency and emergency -- Living the discrete life -- Digital moral panics and mass hysteria -- Bitty, ungrand narratives -- All in the hive -- Ironic camouflage -- Immortal misinformation -- Memetic politics and armchair activism -- Twenty-first century witch hunting -- Looks good man: aesthetic dominance -- We're all situationists now -- Ethical (r)evolution.1 online resource (xvi, 255 pages)

Football is a highly competitive and physically demanding sport. Since football matches last for a long duration (90 minutes) on a large field, athletes must continuously move, leading to significant physical exertion. Therefore, physical fitness is a crucial and essential factor for modern football players. This study aims to select a set of exercises to enhance the physical fitness of male athletes on the five-a-side football teams at Kien Luong High School, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam. To do it, the research has employed conventional methods, including literature synthesis and analysis, interviews, pedagogical testing, pedagogical experiments, and statistical mathematics. The research subjects include 12 male athletes from the five-a-side football teams at Kien Luong High School, Kien Giang Province, Vietnam. The study identified 29 exercises to develop the physical fitness of these athletes, including 3 speed exercises, 14 strength exercises, 3 endurance exercises, 2 flexibility exercises, and 7 coordination exercises. The application of these exercises in practice showed a statistically significant improvement in the physical fitness of the subjects after the experiment (P<0.05).  Article visualizations
