Reactive Motion Generation for Robots in Dynamic Environments
In the near future robots are sought to become an integral part of human everyday
life. Also in industrial settings robotic Co-Workers are expected to become a commodity. Even
though the particular application areas may vastly change, a robot always needs to act in a
dynamic and partially unknown environment. It shall reactively generate motions and prevent
upcoming collisions. If contact is desired or inevitable, it has to handle it robustly and safely.
For preventing collisions in a real-time fashion the Circular Fields method is a powerful scheme,
which we developed further and evaluated it extensively. After an initial analysis in rather
complex 2D simulations, we extend the evaluation to 3D as well as 6D, where we introduce a
hybrid strategy based on Circular and Potential Fields. Finally, the 6D implementation of a
hybrid Circular & Potential Fields approach is used to perform the experimental analysis for
static multi-object parcours and to avoid a dynamically moving human in a 6D task motion.
Based on the algorithms for collision avoidance we also develop and experimentally verify an
algorithm for tactile exploration of complex planar 3D wire elements, whose structure is a-priori

Imaginaries of History and the Ambiguity of Violence: Walter Benjamin and the Modern Intellectual Tradition in the Middle East |
The Centre for Islamic and Middle East Studies at the University of Oslo and the Academy of Fine Art at Oslo National Academy of the Arts are pleased to present a series of lectures and workshops on the modern intellectual history of the Middle East. Focusing on Walter Benjamin’s reception in the Middle East, this event brings together two keynote speakers, Jens Hanssen and Sami Khatib, who will discuss various imaginaries of history and the ambiguous notion of violence in the work of Benjamin as well as Mahmud Darwish and Hannah Arendt, and others.
These issues are pertinent to the work of the Centre for Islamic and Middle East Studies and the Academy of Fine Art, both of which have a longstanding engagement in the Middle East – the Centre through its ongoing scholarly activity in the field, the Academy through its long-term collaboration with the International Academy of Art Palestine. Gathering students and scholars from both institutions, this event offers a variety of perspectives on the importance of discussing European and Arab modern thought in their interrelation
Politics of Negativity:Launching of the First Issue of the Journal Stasis
How is it possible to say ‘no’ – to contradict, oppose, reject or deny something? Philosophy of the last two centuries draws attention to the paradox of negation, which cannot help but reaffirm what it pretends rejecting. Nevertheless, at least since Hegel, ‘negativity’ became an essential ingredient of modernity to the point that all major concepts of modern thought – such as subjectivity, freedom, and revolution – seem to necessarily imply a positive evaluation of the negative. 20th century philosophy may also be read as a desperate search for absolute negativity, one that would not have anything positive in it and would therefore represent a pure act of disjuncture. However, such an absolutely negative attitude displays a troubling melancholic side too: instead of negating something, the epoch of negativity may end up simply ‘willing nothing’. What happens then when negativity goes awry? The first issue of Stasis reflects on the possibility of rehabilitating the virtues of the negative as an antidote to resist political melancholia and turn it into new revolutionary theories and practices. Stasis is a peer-reviewed bilingual journal (English/Russian) in social and political theory, which is published by the European University at St. Petersburg. Stasis means at once a particular position, an interrupting suspension, and an uprising. The first issue includes articles by Ray Brassier, Sami Khatib, Vitaly Kosykhin, Artemy Magun, Jamila Mascat, Gregor Moder, Benjamin Noys, and Oxana Timofeeva

Radiological diagnosis of median nerve lipoma: A case report from Palestine
Lipomas are benign neoplasms that develop from adipocyte-rich adipose tissue. They affect up to 2% of the population and make up about 50% of all soft-tissue neoplasms. The most common locations for them to appear asymptomatically are the neck, upper back, proximal limbs, and chest. They typically start off as single, distinct, movable lumps. A 50-year-old man who had pain and edema in his right wrist came to our hospital. The patient’s history dates back to 9 years ago, when he first began to complain of swelling in his wrist rest but no discomfort. According to a clinical examination, he has a soft, non-painful bump in his right wrist. After being monitored for 9 years with no change in the size of the tumor on his right wrist, the patient started to experience right hand pain and a weak right grasp. Mag-netic resonance imaging is the preferred visualization method for examining hand tumors; it is advised to perform a preoperative complementary ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging investigation in cases of atypical findings or nonfrequent locations of nerve com-pression, which are clinically interpreted as idiopathic compression.Writing the manuscript: Oadi N.
