The use of neuropsychological tests to study the effects of aging on driving performance in the UK

    No full text
Research was conducted to identify a series of neuropsychological tests to assess the ability to drive. Driving performance of young and old UK drivers was modeled through multiple linear regression and univariate logistic regression tools. The UFOV3 test (i.e. the third subtest of the UFOV test) had comparatively high discriminating ability in separating poor-drivers from not-poor-drivers, with 92.86% of the drivers correctly classified; the UFOV3 test resulted in a Sensitivity of 62.5%. Age and a composite cognitive measure were also found to be sound discriminators of poor-drivers and not-poor-drivers with 91.07% and 89.28% of the drivers correctly classified respectively; both age and the composite cognitive measure resulted in a Sensitivity of 50%. It was found that the commonly recommended Clock Drawing Test and the Trail Making-B test were insignificant predictors of driving ability. Results suggest that for a score greater than 220 on the UFOV3 test, the driver may be further evaluated by a driving specialist to ascertain questionable driving behavior. Also, drivers above the age of 77 were more susceptible to exhibiting unusual driving behavior; if such drivers have UFOV3 scores greater than 220 it would be more appropriate to evaluate driving behavior through a driving specialist.</p

An Analysis of Allocative Efficiency of Wheat Growers in Northern Pakistan

Restricted translog production model is used to estimate the allocative efficiency of wheat growers in Peshawar Valley. It is found that average allocative efficiency is 72 percent. To increase the allocative efficiency, farmers need to increase the use of nitrogen and phosphorous and decrease the use of tillage and irrigation.

Deflection of coupled elasticity–electrostatic bimorph PVDF material: theoretical, FEM and experimental verification

    No full text
Piezoelectric materials have wide applications in the field of mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering because of its voltage dependent actuation. Piezoelectric material goes through voltage generation whenever deflection is induced in it and vice versa. Piezoelectric bimorph beam has been widely used for sensing and actuating. In the actuation mode, an electric field is applied across the beam thickness, one layer contracts while the other expands. This results in the bending of the entire structure and tip deflection. In the sensing mode, the bimorph is used to measure an external load by monitoring the piezoelectric induced electrode voltages. In this research work, a 2D bimorph piezoelectric actuator model having two layers made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) material was developed to examine the inverse piezoelectric effect. Finite element analysis (FEA) was carried out on specially designed actuator model by using MATLAB Partial Differential Equation (PDE) ToolboxTM. Theoretical analysis has been carried out to measure the tip deflection under applied electric field. The laboratory test was performed to investigate the deformation behavior of piezoelectric actuator. It is observed that, more the electric field applied, more the material would be deformed in a particular direction. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical results

The political and economic role of trade, unions and associations in the Gaza strip 1967-1993

This thesis attempts to examine the political and economic role of the trade unions and associations in the Gaza Strip 1967-1993. The main theme of analysis is based upon the assumption that these indigenous organizations showed a high degree of politicization. The thesis discusses the unstable socio-economic-organizational- political-and legal setting in the Gaza Strip under the Israeli occupation which constituted a limit on the overall performance of the Palestinian organizations. Within this volatile setting, three main actors interacted: the trade unions and associations, the Israeli occupation authorities, and the Palestinian political factions. The study gives a general review of the associations and non governmental organizations working in the Gaza Strip and it examines the genesis of the Palestinian trade unionism and the trade unions in the Gaza Strip. These organizations constituted a Palestinian institutional- organizational national response and worked parallel to the occupation apparatus. The thesis goes on to analyse the political role of the trade unions and associations in the Gaza Strip through discussing : the nature of their relationship with the Israeli authorities; their relationship with the Palestinian political movements; their positions towards the uprising (intifada); and their attitudes towards the peace process. The study argues further that the economic role of the trade unions and association was very limited compared to their political role. The loan programmes and economic activities of two lending organizations working the Gaza Strip are examined. The lending capacity of the credit organizations was less than US10million(theGDPoftheGazaStripwasaboutUS10 million (the GDP of the Gaza Strip was about US250 million in 1993). Most of their loans went to finance services, consumptive, and non-productive projects
