Correlated Local Fluctuations in the Hydrogen Bond Network of Liquid Water
The hypothesis that liquid water can separate into two phases in the supercooled state has been supported by recent experimental and theoretical studies. However, whether such structural inhomogeneity extends to ambient conditions is under intense debate. Due to the dynamic nature of the hydrogen bond network of liquid water, exploring its structure requires detailed insight into the collective motion of neighboring water molecules, a missing link that has not been examined so far. Here, highly sensitive quantum mechanical calculations detect that the time evolution of nearby hydrogen bonds is strongly correlated, revealing a direct mechanism for the appearance of short-range structural fluctuations in the hydrogen bond network of liquid water for the first time. This correlated dynamics is found to be closely connected to the static structural picture. The distortions from the tetrahedral structure do not occur independently but are correlated due to the preference of nearby donors and acceptors to be in similar environments. The existence of such cooperative fluctuations is further supported by the temperature dependence of the local structural evolution and explained by conventional analysis of localized orbitals. It was found that such correlated structural fluctuations are only observed on a short length scale in simulations at ambient conditions. The correlations of the nearby hydrogen bond pairs of liquid water unveiled here are expected to offer a new insight into connecting the dynamics of individual water molecules and the local structure of the hydrogen bond network.
Vibrational Signature of Water Molecules in Asymmetric Hydrogen Bonding Environments
The O-H stretching vibrational modes of water molecules are sensitive to their local environments. Here, we applied effective normal mode analysis to isolate contributions of each of the two hydrogen atoms to the vibrational modes nu(1) and nu(3) of water molecules in the liquid phase. We demonstrate that the decoupling of the two contributions f(d) and the frequency splitting of the vibrational modes Delta omega(13) are inextricably related to the symmetry of the hydrogen bonding environment. We show that ambient liquid water modeled at the density functional level of theory exhibits the characteristics of an asymmetric environment with an average decoupling of 0.82 and a splitting of 137 inverse centimeters Such large value of decoupling and splitting would account for the inhomogeneous broadening as observed in the vibrational spectra of liquid water. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. A density functional theory study of the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde over vanadia supported on silica, titania, and zirconia
Density functional theory was used to investigate the mechanism and kinetics of methanol oxidation to formaldehyde over vanadia supported on silica, titania, and zirconia. The catalytically active site was modeled as an isolated VO{sub 4} unit attached to the support. The calculated geometry and vibrational frequencies of the active site are in good agreement with experimental measurements both for model compounds and oxide-supported vanadia. Methanol adsorption is found to occur preferentially with the rupture of a V-O-M bond (M = Si, Ti, Zr) and with preferential attachment of a methoxy group to V. The vibrational frequencies of the methoxy group are in good agreement with those observed experimentally as are the calculated isobars. The formation of formaldehyde is assumed to occur via the transfer of an H atom of a methoxy group to the O atom of the V=O group. The activation energy for this process is found to be in the range of 199-214 kJ/mol and apparent activation energies for the overall oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde are predicted to lie in the range of 112-123 kJ/mol, which is significantly higher than that found experimentally. Moreover, the predicted turnover frequency (TOF) for methanol oxidation is found to be essentially independent of support composition, whereas experiments show that the TOF is 10{sup 3} greater for titania- and zirconia-supported vanadia than for silica-supported vanadia. Based on these findings, it is proposed that the formation of formaldehyde from methoxy groups may require pairs of adjacent VO{sub 4} groups or V{sub 2}O{sub 7} dimer structures
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
