    Nadia Passerini is interviewed by Hannah Makin, Commission Editor. Nadia Passerini is Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Bologna (Bologna, Italy). She obtained the degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Bologna in 1992 and the PhD in Pharmaceutical Science in 1997. Her research focuses on the study of drug delivery systems, developing new technologies and new apparatus for the production of solid dosage forms (microparticles, granules and tablets), which can optimize the bioavailability of drugs according to the specific needs of the therapy. Furthermore, she is interested in the solid-state characterization of the produced delivery systems in order to correlate their physicochemical properties to the in vitro release of the drugs. Currently, her research focuses in particular on the production and characterization of microparticles produced by the spray congealing technology. She is author of over 50 international peer-reviewed publications and over 50 contributions (poster and oral presentations) to national and international conferences

    Worth can be a difficult thing to understand and define, even under the best of circumstances. Nadia Boulanger is known to have told her teacher, Gabriel Fauré, that “if there is one thing of which I am certain, it is that my music is worthless.” As a teacher, Boulanger empowered her students to listen for the internal logic present in the pieces of art that she considered valuable. This document will apply Nadia Boulanger’s teachings to her compositions to demonstrate that her music does have worth. To that end, these analyses will compile data to discern the internal logic in her pieces. As a performer, Nadia Boulanger coupled her analytical beliefs to her performance practice; her concerts were shaped by and carefully crafted to present her analyses. Her formal classes included an informal ticket to hear her commentaries in action. Therefore, in addition to analytical validation, the author intends to demonstrate the value of Nadia Boulanger’s music through the arrangement and performance of her compositions as brass chamber music. as brass chamber music

    Level of awareness in contact lens care in UiTM Puncak Alam / Fatin Nadia Mohd Khalil

    Background: Nowadays, contact lens had become a trend especially among young adults. As one of an optical device, contact lenses will be placed directly in front of our cornea. It is a safe optical device to wear as long as the wearers practicing a correct contact lens care. However, a failure to apply a proper practice in daily routines can cause contact lens complications which might lead to visual threatening. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the level of awareness towards contact lens care among contact lens users in UiTM Puncak Alam. Methods: In this cross sectional descriptive study, 60 participants from UiTM Puncak Alam were selected as the respondents to answer the questionnaire on their level of awareness in contact lens care. The participants who wear the contact lens were identified from UiTM Primary Optometry Clinic and Contact lens Clinic. Besides that, the questionnaires were also distributed at the faculties located in UiTM Puncak Alam. Results: Among all the participants involved, majority of 95% were female, meanwhile 5% of the participants were male and their mean age were 22.38 ± 1.485 years. The results of the study revealed that the level of awareness towards contact lens care among students in UiTM Puncak Alam was high. 83.3% of them agreed that tap water cannot be used to clean the contact lens. All of the respondents (100%) acknowledged that hand washing is essential before handling the contact lens. It was also found that 86.7% of them agreed that eye examination is necessary before prescribing the contact lens while 85% of them stated that after care assessment is also crucial after using it. Conclusion: As a conclusion this study has succeeded in determining the high level of awareness towards contact lens care in UiTM Puncak Alam. Their level of awareness in contact lens plays important roles to help in preventing any contact lens complications later

Maintaining vigilance is one of the requirements in many workplaces, especially those that rely on monitoring, such as: surveillance tasks, security monitoring, and air traffic control. These tasks necessitate a specific level of arousal, to provide an acceptable level of cognitive efficiency. Vigilance decrement could result in fatal consequences like accidents, loss of life, and system failure. In this thesis, we investigated the possibility of assessing the vigilance levels using a fusion of Electroencephalography (EEG) and eye tracking data. Vigilance levels are induced by performing a modified version of Stroop Color-Word Task (SCWT) for 30 minutes. Feature-level fusion based on the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) has been employed to enhance the classification accuracy for vigilance level assessment. In the feature level fusion, EEG and eye tracking features are concatenated into a single vector-feature-space and then fed as an input to the Support Vector Machine classifier. The results of the fusion showed that both modalities’ accuracies have been enhanced. The highest accuracy for the fusion was using the EEG Delta band of 96.8± 0.6%, which is higher than using the EEG Delta band without the fusion (88.18±8.5%) or the eye tracking date alone (76.8 ± 8.4 %).College of EngineeringMultidisciplinary ProgramsMaster of Science in Biomedical Engineering (MSBME

    Role of Sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) in the management of metabolic syndrome and related disorders: Focus on NAFLD-atherosclerosis interplay

    Sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) is a commonly used spice in the Mediterranean region and considered as healthy food ingredients. The beneficial value of sumac is well documented in folk medicine. Accumulating data explored the phytochemical, nutritional and therapeutic proprieties suggesting sumac as a potential functional food. Here, we discuss the general and scientific aspects of sumac. Sumac is rich in different polyphenolic compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic acids. The potential therapeutic effects of sumac have been studied in various cellular and animal models, as well as in human. These reports suggest that Sumac has potential effect against oxidative stress, inflammation, obesity, hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyperlipidemia, which represent key pathogenic mechanisms contributing to cardio-metabolic, liver, and cancer diseases. Clinical studies using sumac or its major compounds, suggest that this herbal product may represent a useful therapeutic tool in the management of metabolic-related conditions such as liver-atherosclerosis complications

    Background: Carvacrol, a plant phenolic monoterpene, is largely employed as food additive and phytochemical. Objective: We aimed to assess the lipid lowering and protective effects of carvacrol in vitro using cellular models of hepatic steatosis and endothelial dysfunction. We also investigated if and how the binding of carvacrol to albumin, the physiological transporter for small compounds in the blood, might be altered by the presence of high levels of fatty acids (FAs). Methods: Hepatic FaO cells treated with exogenous FAs mimic hepatosteatosis; endothelial HECV cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide are a model of endothelial dysfunction. In these models, we measured spectrophotometrically lipid accumulation and release, lipoperoxidation, free radical production, and nitric oxide release before and after treatment with carvacrol. The carvacrol binding to albumin in the presence or absence of high levels of FAs was assessed by absorption and emission spectroscopies. Results: Carvacrol counteracted lipid accumulation and oxidative stress in hepatocytes and protected endothelial cells from oxidative stress and dysfunction. Moreover, high levels of FAs reduced the binding of carvacrol to albumin. Conclusion: The results suggest the good potential of carvacrol in ameliorating dysfunction of hepatic and endothelial cells in vitro. High levels of circulating FAs might compete with carvacrol for binding to albumin thus influencing its transport and bio-distribution

    Navigating dating and romantic relationships as an adult with Tourette Syndrome: an exploratory study

    Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder defined by recurrent and intrusive involuntary tics that begin in childhood. Individuals with TS often face significant psycho-social challenges, given the public nature of their tics and the fact that their symptoms are often misunderstood by others. This study explores how adults with TS navigate dating and romantic relationships, including the challenges they face and the strengths they have developed in this process. Five adult women with TS were interviewed using a semi-structured interview about their psycho-social experiences of living with TS and how the disorder has affected their dating experiences. The interviews were qualitatively analyzed as individual case studies and also compared and contrasted on the basis of five major research questions: 1) How do adults with TS navigate dating and romantic relationships? 2) What challenges and limitations do adults with TS face in dating and pursuing romantic relationships? 3) How do adults with TS go about explaining their symptoms to romantic partners? 4) How do the socio-emotional experiences of adults with TS with family and peers influence their dating experiences? 5) What factors are helpful for adults with TS in navigating dating and romantic relationships? Findings from the study indicate several themes among the subjects’ experiences: Choosing whether, why, when, how and what to disclose to partners; challenges of explaining tics and TS to others; reasons for concealing tics; impact of making disclosures to romantic partners; family and peers’ responses as a model for how romantic partners may respond; family and peers’ responses as a motivation for getting different responses from romantic partners; and considering genetics and children. Implications for individuals with TS and their parents are discussed, and recommendations for mental health professionals working with such individuals are made.Psy.
