Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. ß-cell transplantatie: een stap in de genezing van type 1 diabetes patienten
Type 1 diabetes is een ziekte van onbekende oorsprong, gekenmerkt door selectieve destructie van insulineproducerende cellen door toedoen van T-cel gemedieerde autoimmuniteit. Bij het stellen van de klinische diagnose wordt levenslange insuline injectie onvermijdelijk. Deze dagelijkse insuline injecties vormen een zware sociale last voor de patiënt en de familie. Zelfs met intensieve insulinetherapie zijn sterk schommelende glucosewaarden immers bijna onvermijdelijk. Deze schommelingen vormen een risico op het ontwikkelen van chronische complicaties van diabetes. In de westerse wereld zijn deze complicaties (o.a. blindheid, nierfalen, diabetische voet en amputaties, CVA en myocard infarct) verantwoordelijk voor de meeste diabetes gerelateerde morbiditeit en mortaliteit. Nieuwe en experimentele therapieën hebben als doel om deze verwoestende complicaties te voorkomen of te vertragen. Eilandjestransplantatie is een experimentele behandeling die als doel heeft de secundaire complicaties te vertragen. Door implantatie van een metabool adequate hoeveelheid ß-cellen, met een insulinesecretie afgestemd op de metabole nood, wordt de glucose homeostase hersteld en zou op die wijze de incidentie van ernstige hypoglycemie en chronische complicatie kunnen afnemen.Eilandjestransplantatie is al lang voorgesteld als alternatief voor pancreas- transplantatie. Studies in proefdieren toonden aan dat de eilandjes kunnen ingeplant worden met behulp van een eenvoudige techniek met als resultaat langdurige correctie van de glucosecontrole. Bovendien kon in diermodellen aangetoond worden dat voorbehandeling van eilandjes de immunogeniciteit van het donor materiaal vermindert zodat succesvolle transplantatie mogelijk was zonder langdurig gebruik van immuunsuppressie. Gedurende jaren echter konden geen van deze resultaten herhaald worden in type 1 diabetes patiënten. De eerste vooruitgang werd geboekt toen men aantoonde dat humane eilandjes in staat waren om diabetes te corrigeren in patiënten die tevens een niertransplantatie ondergingen, hoewel het percentage succesvolle casussen op langere termijn beperkt bleef.Shapiro et al. toonde in een meer recente studie aan dat eilandjestransplantatie in niet-uremische patiënten succesvol was in 80% van de gevallen 1 jaar na transplantatie. Ook in België werd er een multi-centrisch project opgestart onder leiding van Prof. Pipeleers, waar verschillende universiteiten (KUL, UIA, VUB, ULB, RUG, ULG) samenwerken in een klinisch eilandjes transplantatieprogramma. Het hier voorgestelde onderzoek maakt deel uit van dat programma. Doel van het onderzoekHet belangrijkste opzet van dit werk was de overleving van ß-cell allogreffes in type 1 diabetes patiënten te verbeteren door het identificeren van de belangrijkste factoren die de overleving ervan bepalen. Ons eerste doel was na gaan of de overleving van en de metabole controle door ß-cell allogreffes kan verbeterd worden door gebruik van gestandaardiseerde en gecultiveerde ß-cell allogreffes. Dit laat toe om de celsamenstelling van de greffes te onderzoeken vóór de eigenlijke implantatie en zo greffes te implanteren met een gekend aantal ß-cellen en gekende zuiverheid. Ons tweede doel was om de functionele ß-cell massa van ß-cell allogreffes in non-uremische type 1 diabetes patiënten te meten, door gebruik te maken van een hyperglycemische clamp. Resultaten werden vergeleken met drie controlegroepen: type 1 diabetes patiënten die een gecombineerde pancreas-nier transplantatie ondergingen, patiënten zonder diabetes die een niertransplantatie ondergingen en gezonde vrijwilligers. Ons derde doel was na gaan of de overleving van ß-cell allogreffes kan verbeterd worden door gebruik te maken van een immuunsuppressief protocol zonder calcineurin inhibitor (tacrolimus). Hiervoor werd een pilootstudie opgezet waarin een immuunsuppressief protocol met ATG-sirolimus monotherapie werd vergeleken met een combinatietherapie van ATG-sirolimus en tacrolimus. Samenvatting van de resultatenEen eerste bevinding was dat de overleving van en de metabole controle door de ß-cell allogreffes beter voorspelbaar wordt door gebruik te maken van gecultiveerde ß-cell allogreffes met een gekende celsamenstelling en een gekend aantal ß-cellen. Het aantal ß-cellen in de allogreffe correleerde sterk met onze klinische eindpunten. We stelden vast dat minstens 2 x 106 ß-cellen per kilogram lichaamsgewicht nodig zijn om, 2 maanden na transplantatie, overleving van de greffe (= C-peptide > 0.5 ng/ml) en een verbetering van de glucosecontrole te bekomen. Wij toonden aan dat het bereiken van een stabiele glucosecontrole- uitgedrukt in een afname van de variatiecoëfficiënt van de ochtendglycemie- een onmiddellijk voordeel is voor de getransplanteerde patiënten. De stabielere glucosecontrole is bovendien geassocieerd aan een afname van het risico op ernstige hypoglycemie. Een tweede bevinding was dat de hyperglycemische clamp kan gebruikt worden om de functionele ß-cell massa na transplantatie te meten. Een opvallende bevinding was dat zowel type 1 diabetes patiënten die een ß-cell transplantatie ondergingen als ook de ontvangers van een gecombineerde pancreas-nier allogreffe, een gedaalde functionele ß-cell massa hebben op respectievelijk 1.5 en 3 jaar na de transplantatie. Wij toonden aan dat voor het meten van de functionele ß-cell massa de hyperglycemische clamp gevoeliger is dan de klassieke metabole eindpunten (ochtendglycemie en HbA1c) of glucosestimulatie of glucagonstimulatie alleen. Ten derde toonden we aan dat het gebruik van ATG-sirolimus monotherapie resulteerde in een lagere overlevingskans van de ß-cell allogreffe in vergelijking met ATG-sirolimus en tacrolimus. Bovendien was het gebruik van sirolimus geassocieerd aan het optreden van ernstige nevenwerkingen en een toename van voorafbestaande proteïnurie. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
