    No full text
In this episode Jon O\u27Gorman hosts James Holmes, Kevin McCranie and new this week from the Joint Military Operations Department, Milan Vego. They begin by discussing the perspectives of Mahan and Corbett and what makes them different. They move to commonly held misconceptions on each of their theories. The guests bat around the points of agreement and disagreement between the two, especially concerning the concepts of offense and defense. They provide clarity on what the term fleet in being means and how it can be used. Lasty, we discuss commerce raiding and the key takeaways of naval theory for the contemporary environment in regard to China.https://digital-commons.usnwc.edu/profiles-in-strategy/1027/thumbnail.jp

    Quantum mechanics in a nutshell

    No full text
Covering the fundamentals as well as many special topics of current interest, this is the most concise, up-to-date, and accessible graduate-level textbook on quantum mechanics available. Written by Gerald Mahan, a distinguished research physicist and author of an acclaimed textbook on many-particle physics, Quantum Mechanics in a Nutshell is the distillation of many years' teaching experience. Emphasizing the use of quantum mechanics to describe actual quantum systems such as atoms and solids, and rich with interesting applications, the book proceeds from solving for the properties of a single particle in potential; to solving for two particles (the helium atom); to addressing many-particle systems. Applications include electron gas, magnetism, and Bose-Einstein Condensation; examples are carefully chosen and worked; and each chapter has numerous homework problems, many of them originalCovering the fundamentals as well as many special topics of current interest, this is the most concise, up-to-date, and accessible graduate-level textbook on quantum mechanics available. Quality Protein Maize Germplasm Characterized for Amino Acid Profiles and Endosperm Opacity

    No full text
Quality protein maize (QPM) is improved over normal (non-QPM) maize in grain concentrations of the essential amino acids lysine and tryptophan. Quality protein maize has a long history as tropical adapted germplasm, but little effort has been made to incorporate temperate or sub-tropical germplasm for temperate adaptation and interactions between different modifier loci in these backgrounds are poorly understood. A design-II mating scheme including new temperate and subtropical lines produced 69 hybrids. Large hybrid genetic variation components resulted in substantial broad-sense heritability H2 estimates, specifically tryptophan (0.46) and endosperm opacity (0.82). A microbial assay for amino acid estimation proved robust across diverse environments with minimal genotype × environment (G×E) effects. Endosperm opacity had no G×E effects across both Texas and Iowa locations demonstrating stability for this trait. Endosperm opacity primarily followed an additive, midparent trend, with a few hybrids deviating from the trend (36%) suggesting a complex nature of multiple modifier loci across diverse germplasm. The top QPM hybrid outperformed the top commercial hybrid by 35 and 30% for lysine and tryptophan as a proportion of grain, respectively. QPM line Tx832 was a parent of top hybrids for lysine and tryptophan, and the highest noncommercial hybrids for methionine. Minimal correlations with yield and other traits suggest that future breeding should result in QPM hybrids with increasingly competitive yields. This article is published as Mahan, Adam L., Seth C. The ‘Sea Power’ Concept and Spanish-American War 1898: Reflexion of Captain A.T. Mahan

Wojna z Hiszpanią nie tylko potwierdziła słuszność koncepcji Mahana, ale także pozwoliła kapitanowi uzupełnić swoje wizje o dodatkowe tezy zawarte w książce: Lekcje z wojny z Hiszpanią i inne artykuły (Lessons of the War with Spain, and Other Articles). Jednocześnie Mahan argumentował, że należało by zrezygnować całkowicie z projektowania okrętów starszych typów, jakimi były monitory. The article discusses the problem of results of and lessons from the Spanish-American war of 1898 through the «sea power» concept. American captain Alfred Thayer Mahan, who was the author of this concept, believed that the guarantee of the power and prosperity of any great political power was a powerful navy. In this view, the United States, which Mahan also counted among the mightiest world powers, should build its navy more actively.  Not only did the war with Spain confirm Mahan’s ideas, but also allowed him to expand his concept, leading to the publication of his book Lessons of the war with Spain and other articles. Although Mahan noticed the successful ending of the war on land and at sea, he also pointed out some serious miscalculations that should be corrected as soon as possible. In particular, the US government had to take care of improving its coastal fortifications. If Spain had chosen the tactics of raiding coastal cities, the US would have suffered colossal damage. Other issues postulated by Mahan included increasing the number of warships and army units. In his opinion, it was necessary to allocate additional funds for that purpose and launch a publicity campaign to win the people’s support. While analysing the composition of the US Navy, Captain Mahan recommended focusing on the construction of two types of warships: battleships, to play the main role in sea battles and cruisers that, stripped of armour, were to serve as support for the battleships. Mahan also argued that the construction of older types of ships, such as monitors, should be abandoned

Epitaxial ternary RexMo1-xSi2 thin films on Si(100)

    No full text
Reactive deposition epitaxy was used to synthesize thin layers of RexMo1-xSi2 on Si(100). In the case of x>=1, ReSi2 layers of excellent crystalline quality have been reported previously [J.E. Mahan, K. M. Geib, G. Y. Robinson, R. G. Long, Y. Xinghua, G. Bai, and M.-A. Nicolet, Appl. Phys. Lett. 56, 2439 (1990)]. In the case of x=0, however, virtually no alignment of theMoSi2 and the substrate is found, although this silicide is nearly isomorphic to ReSi2. For intermediate values of x, highly epitaxial ternary silicides are obtained, at least for a Mo fraction up to 1/3
