The effect of kettlebell training on body composition, flexibility, balance, and core strength
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of kettle bell training on body composition, flexibility, and balance. Seventeen subjects (9 male, 8 female) completed a kettle bell training protocol which was held two times per week for 8 weeks. Eleven volunteers with similar characteristics served as a control group. Pre and post-testing evaluation included body composition measurements, low back, hamstring, and shoulder flexibility, static and dynamic balance, and core strength tests. No significant differences were seen in body composition (weight, sum of skinfolds, and% body fat), static balance, flexibility (shoulder raise, trunk hyperextension, and sit and reach), or dynamic balance in the anterior direction. Core strength, as measured by the plank test, increased by 70% ( 45 sec). Also, dynamic balance showed a significant improvement in the posterolateral direction of7.20 em (10.7% increase) and there was a similar improvement (p < .05) of 8.6 em (13.7% increase) seen in the posteromedial direction. Results indicate that kettlebell training can improve dynamic balance as well as core strength and endurance. Incorporating kettle bell training into a workout routine may provide additional benefits not typically seen with traditional training

Understanding usage patterns of electric kettle and energy saving potential
The availability of smart metering and smart appliances enables detecting and characterising appliance use in a household, quantifying energy savings through efficient appliance use and predicting appliance-specific demand from load measurements is possible. With growing electric kettle ownership and usage, lack of any efficiency labelling guidelines for the kettle, slow technological progress in improving kettle efficiency relative to other domestic appliances, and current consumer attitudes, urgent investigation into consumer kettle usage patterns is warranted. From an efficiency point of view, little can be done about the kettle, which is more efficient than other methods of heating water such as the stove top kettle. However, since a majority households use the kettle inefficiently by overfilling, in order to meet energy targets, it is imperative to quantify inefficient usage and predict demand. For the purposes of scalability, we propose tools that depend only on load measurement data for quantifying and visualizing kettle usage and energy consumption, assessing energy wastage through overfilling via our proposed electric kettle model, and predicting kettle-specific demand, from which we can estimate potential energy savings in a household and across a housing stock. This is demonstrated using data from a longitudinal study across a sample of 14 UK households for a two-year period
Differential Acquisition of m-Sequences using Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation
In this contribution a novel sequential estimation method is proposed for the acquisition of -sequences. This sequential estimation method exploits the principle of iterative soft-in-soft-out (SISO) decoding for enhancing the acquisition performance, and that of differential pre-processing for the sake of achieving an enhanced acquisition performance, when communicating over various communication environments. Hence the advocated acquisition arrangement is referred to as the Differential Recursive Soft Sequential Estimation (DRSSE) acquisition scheme. The DRSSE acquisition scheme exhibits a low complexity, which is similar to that of an -sequence generator, while achieving an acquisition time that is linearly dependent on the number of stages in the -sequence generator. A low acquisition time is achieved with the advent of the property that the proposed DRSSE scheme is capable of determining the real-time reliabilities associated with the decision concerning a set of, say , consecutive chips. This set of consecutive chips constitutes the sufficient initial condition for enabling the local -sequence generator to produce a synchronized local despreading -sequence replica. Owing to these attractive characteristics, the DRSSE acquisition scheme constitutes a promising initial synchronization scheme for acquisition of long -sequences, when communicating over various propagation environments
