The History of the Kernohan Notch Revisited
The history of false localizing signs is intimately linked to the birth of modern neurology and the unraveling of the mysteries of localization through neurological examination at the end of the 19th century. This phenomenon has attracted much attention but has not been properly explained, even in the authoritative handbooks such as that by Oppenheim. A scholarly article written by Kernohan and Woltman in 1929 is considered to be a landmark in the history of neurology and neurosurgery in that it provided the definitive answer and an exhaustive explanation of the problem, leading some neurologists to conclude that the localization of a lesion is not an exact science. However, despite the professional manner in which Kernohan and Woltman presented their case, they did not offer an explanation. In another article published 2 years earlier in 1927, Groeneveld and Schaltenbrand provided a pathophysiological and anatomical explanation of the phenomenon, described in detail. Although Kernohan and Woltman themselves refer to that previous article, it was this article that provided the first logical, clear, indubitable explanation of the phenomenon that we today refer to as the Kernohan notch
The fall of Doha and the rise of regionalism? CEPS Policy Brief No. 111, September 2006
The indefinite prorogation of the WTO’s Doha trade talks in July suggests that the global appetite for multilateralism may now be seriously weakened. In this new Policy Brief, CEPS Senior Research Fellow David Kernohan and T. Huw Edwards of Loughborough University look at how a failed or significantly delayed Doha round (say till 2009 at the earliest) could affect the scope and structure of any eventual WTO deal. In particular, if a rise in regionalism in the interim is inevitable, they ask whether the EU should reassess its regional trade policy objectives? A move from a multilateral focus to a twinned regional-multilateral trade policy stance will have consequences, both for practical reasons of EC ‘institutional capacity’ and for strategic reasons, in terms of choice of partner/s. Either way, tough decisions will have to be made. Wherever possible, the authors argue that these tactical choices should be preceded by careful technical analysis of the choice of regional partners and trading groups, as well as on traditional ‘diplomatic’ methods of trade partner selection

This book aims to apply recent thinking in philosophy to the age-old problem of the meaning of life, and to do so in a way that is useful to atheists, agnostics, and humanists. The book reorients the search for meaning away from a search for purpose and toward a search for what truly matters, and criticizes our society's prevailing theory of value, the preference satisfaction theory of the economists. It next argues that emotions are our best guides to what matters in life, and shows how emotional judgments about what matters can be true. Finally it discusses how a meaningful life can be lived, describes the role of justice, freedom, identity, and culture in its construction, and compares the meaningful with the happy life. Andrew Kernohan has a Ph.D in philosophy from the University of Toronto and is an Adjunct Professor at Dalhousie University. He is the author of Liberalism, Equality, and Cultural Oppression (Cambridge University Press, 1998) and various articles in professional philosophy journals

Key Clinical Message Kernohan–Woltman phenomenon is a rare and paradoxical neurological situation in which a transtentorial lesion leads to compression of the contralateral cerebral peduncle responsible for compression of the descending corticospinal fibers with clinical consequence of a motor deficit ipsilateral to the primary lesion. This phenomenon should attract the attention of clinicians in order to avoid unfortunate incidents such as wrong‐side craniotomy in neurosurgical practice. In this work, we report a similar situation. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The First Case of Kernohan-Woltman Notch Phenomenon Caused by Epidural Hematoma in a Pediatric Patient
Kernohan-Woltman notch phenomenon (KWNP) is an ipsilateral motor weakness due to compression of the contralateral cerebral peduncle. Most of the KWNP cases reported have been due to subdural hematomas, intracranial space-occupying lesions, and spontaneous bleeding of vascular malformations. In this study, we present the first pediatric case of KWNP caused by a traumatic epidural hematoma. Although subdural hematomas are the most frequent reason for KWNP, epidural hematomas may cause paradoxical ipsilateral signs not only in adults but also in pediatric patients.</jats:p
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Kernohan-Woltman Notch Phenomenon Caused by Acute Traumatic Subdural Haematoma
A 27-year-old man suffered from right hemiparesis after a closed head injury. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a right hemisphere subdural haematoma with midline structure shifted to the left. The CT finding was believed to be mislabeled because the site of haematoma did not correlate with an ipsilateral hemiparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right transtentorial uncal herniation and a small lesion within left cerebral peduncle, suggesting Kernohan-Woltman notch phenomenon (KWNP). KWNP has been rarely seen in patients with acute traumatic subdural haemorrhage. Anatomical small maximum tentorial notch width is the possible anatomical factor predisposing our patient to this phenomenon. (Hong Kong j.emerg.med. 2014;21:116-119) </jats:p
