The Effects of Wind Induced Conductor Motion on Accreted Atmospheric Ice
Galloping of transmission lines creates some cyclic stresses in the conductor and accreted atmospheric ice covering the conductor, which may result in ice failure leading to shedding. Attempts have been made in this research to estimate these cyclic stresses and experimental tests have been conducted to study their effects on atmospheric ice. First, galloping of an
ice-covered conductor was simulated by appropriate modification of existing models for bare conductors submitted to galloping. Then, the results of simulation were applied as input for a new model developed using ABAQUS. Results show that the layers of atmospheric ice at the top and bottom of the conductor endure maximum stress. The results of experimental tests with increasing cyclic stress show that ice does not break during
galloping at wind velocities below 4.5 m/s. The tests under cyclic loads with constant amplitude reveal that the ice does not fail under stresses corresponding to wind speeds of 3 and 4 m/s, and
sometimes fails under stresses arising at a wind speed of 5 m/s

Nietzsche come "co-pilota"

A smart microgrid for buildings of the public administration
An important share of energy consumption is due to buildings. Smart grids and Nearly Zero Energy Buildings are among key technologies towards more efficient and sustainable power systems. The present work is part of a project for the implementation of a smart grid connecting energy efficient buildings in the historical center of an Italian city. In this work, two public buildings are considered. First, the energy consumption of the buildings has been analyzed. Then, the refurbishment of the buildings, efficient thermal systems with heat pumps, local photovoltaic generation, cogeneration and electrical mobility infrastructure have been designed. Also, the possibility of connection of a multi-vector smart grid is investigated. The results show how the implemented system can increasingly contribute to the energy performance

Compact and smart outdoor medium/low voltage substation for energy communities
Energy transition toward smart grids with deep impact of renewables, energy storage systems, and EV charging stations will increasingly promote the establishment of energy communities that own portions of the electricity grid. The energy communities will consist of clusters of multi-unit buildings and or single residential units aggregated sharing a common or multiple medium and low voltage (MV/LV) electrical substations. The size and impact of the location of these MV/LV substations can constitute a barrier especially for highly urbanized contexts where it is very complicated to provide technical spaces inside buildings for large technical systems like transformers, MV switchgear, etc. The idea of this work consists of developing a compact outdoor MV/LV substation to reduce the overall dimensions and to make the execution modularized to facilitate management and maintenance. Also an investigation of energy exchange between multi-unit buildings which are considered as the real energy community case study. The main objective for this case study is to minimize the operation cost of the system by maximizing the self-consumption
A Comprehensive techno-economic solution for demand control in ports. Energy storage systems integration
The specific types of loads such as cranes, in particular, ship to shore (STS), rubber tyred gantry (RTG), rail mounted gantry (RMG) and cold ironing system in the ports present a distinctive load profile, due to their sudden peak load demand. To deal with the problem and avoid extra costs, it is possible to apply a delay time management to cranes operation and/or to implement energy storage systems (ESSs) to take benefit of regenerative energy. At this aim, the load profile characteristics require both energy storage with high power and energy densities and fast response time. Peak shaving can optimize the load demand and facilitate the participation of small power generation units based on renewable energy resources. In this regard, many approaches are introduced such as energy management strategies, modern technologies, and installing high-tech devices such as battery energy storage (BES), ultracapacitors (UCs), and flywheel energy storage (FES) acting as ESS. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to deal with an investigation for an integrated vision and a combination of ESSs application in the ports loads. Since the ports cannot persist to have independent and uncontrolled power systems, hence, the paper proposes the organization of their global design in a microgrid approach and the coordinated management for all the services such as cranes, reefers, col ironing, trucks, offices to increase the operation and energy performance. The statistical results show that the integration of ESSs can provide peak shaving, energy saving, and cost reduction in ports

Modularized electrical power systems. The three-bus architecture
The modularization of industrial plants concerns the decomposition of the system into multiple subsystems that are built in yards located in different areas of the world and then assembled on the construction site. This design philosophy allows for the reduction of construction costs and schedules. Unconventional plant solutions can make the most of this system concept in the electrical sector. In this article, an alternative architecture for electrical distribution is proposed. The suggested scheme allows the reduction in the number of items of equipment and the weight of the system, resulting in an optimal solution for a modularized system. The results are achieved by decreasing the required installed power and the weight of the copper used for the cables
Power balancing in STS group cranes with flywheel energy storage based on DSM strategy
Considering the highest power demand by Ship to Shore (STS) cranes in pier E at the port of Long Beach, designing a proper control system can harness the peak load increasing. In this paper, tw o strategies have been used for the peak load shaving. First, demand side management (DSM) in order to peak power demand minimization by duty cycle coordination between STS cranes based on PSO algorithm and in the second part utilization of Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) to make a power balance between generation and demand side. Results in MATLAB related to reference data shows the proposed method can reduce the peak power demand in the STS group cranes and provide a proper power balance between generation and demand
