Participatory Design and Action Research: Identical Twins or Synergetic Pair?

    No full text
In this paper we explore the similarities and differences of participatory design and action research in a cross-disciplinary fashion. We briefly outline two distinct studies: (1) a design study that examines mobile interactions of backpackers, and (2) an urban sociology study to better understand social networks of apartment residents. The first study follows a participatory design approach. The second study is guided by action research principles. We reflect on the research practice of these two studies in order to discuss the key methodological features of each. We would like to invite the larger participatory design community to continue the comparison and exploration we have begun here. By outlining the tools and techniques, and the application thereof we hope to promote the usefulness of action research for participatory design projects and vice versa

    Personal health records

The paper addresses the complex interplay between patients, healthcare professionals, and technology in relation to the treatment of chronic patients. It reflects on an ongoing interdisciplinary action research project striving to design and implement IT support for communication and collaboration in the distributed heterogeneous network of chronic patients and the healthcare professionals that take care of them. An interactive personal health record (PHR) has been designed as part of the project. As such it is part of a trend to find ways to include patients in their own care process. This has been motivated by expected health benefits for the patients as well as promises to lead to reduced costs for a burdened healthcare system

Systems Development: Possibilities for and Obstacles to Changing Practice

Too little time, too few people, and too poor techniques and tools are frequent explanations of why a system development project does not come up to expectations. This article will discuss some other explanations centering around two concepts: approaching the product and handling project situations. The article is partly inspired by Schön's studies of how various professionals think when they work, and partly by my own studies of the working practices of computer specialists

TRADE UNIONS' INFLUENCE ON TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE.

    No full text
This article presents some of the results from a project about trade unions and technological change and the research method used. Chapter 2 describes some problems of the application of edp-technology until now. Chapter 3 deals with the research method used, and the main activities of the project are described. Chapter 4 presents proposals for control mechanisms for the unions against the employers' use of technology. The DDE (Development, Democracy and Edp) project was a research project carried out in co-operation with the Danish trade unions. The main purpose was to increase the possibilities of the trade unions for influencing the application of edp. Another purpose was to develop research and education in the field of system work.</p
