Measurements of 220Rn and 222Rn and CO2 emissions in soil and fumarole gases on Mt. Etna volcano (Italy) : implications for gas transport and shallow ground fracture
Author Posting. © American Geophysical Union, 2007. This article is posted here by permission of American Geophysical Union for personal use, not for redistribution. The definitive version was published in Geochemistry Geophysics Geosystems 8 (2007): Q10001, doi:10.1029/2007GC001644.Measurements of 220Rn and 222Rn activity and of CO2 flux in soil and fumaroles were carried out on Mount Etna volcano in 2005–2006, both in its summit area and along active faults on its flanks. We observe an empirical relationship between (220Rn/222Rn) and CO2 efflux. The higher the flux of CO2, the lower the ratio between 220Rn and 222Rn. Deep sources of gas are characterized by high 222Rn activity and high CO2 efflux, whereas shallow sources are indicated by high 220Rn activity and relatively low CO2 efflux. Excess 220Rn highlights sites of ongoing shallow rock fracturing that could be affected by collapse, as in the case of the rim of an active vent. Depletion both in 220Rn and in CO2 seems to be representative of residual degassing along recently active eruptive vents. This work was funded by the Istituto Nazionale di
Geofisica e Vulcanologia (S.G., M.N.) and by the Dipartimento
per la Protezione Civile (Italy), projects V3_6/28-Etna

A Sr-Nd-Hf isotope characterization of dust source areas in Victoria Land and the McMurdo Sound sector of Antarctica
Determining the geographical provenance of dust provides crucial insight into the global dust cycle. For the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS), the importance of Southern hemisphere potential dust sources has been thoroughly investigated using radiogenic isotopes, whereas proximal dust source areas located on the periphery of the ice sheet remain poorly documented from a geochemical standpoint. In this work, we expand the existing isotopic (Srsingle bondNd) catalogue of dust and sand-sized sediments from Victoria Land and the McMurdo Sound sector, and incorporate Hf isotopic data to place additional constraints on dust source identification. The isotopic field for materials considered in this study is characterized by 87Sr/86Sr ratios ranging from 0.703 to 0.783, εNd between −12.01 and 6.36, and εHf from −16.77 to 6.89. As reported in previous works, the data reveal close relationships between Antarctic sediments and distinct parent lithologies; in addition, our findings emphasize the background presence of very fine dusts originating from dominant global sources and regional volcanic activity as barriers to direct source-to-sink comparison of isotopic signatures. Thus, geochemical characterizations of dust sources to the Antarctic ice sheet involving multiple size fractions, including coarser-grained particles more susceptible to short-range transport, can help us to rule out global sources of dust when examining local sediment cores and ice cores

Mr. D. V. Kilback
Each school year brings new challenges to students and
staff, requiring fresh approaches to old problems, and a
revised perspective on essential goals.
We have struggled this year with development of course
objectives and evaluation plans, with more weighty final
exams, and a different budgetting system. The School Board
is holding regular meetings in the various schools, thus
enabling members to become more familiar with daily operations.
The cafeteria committee, under sponsorship of the senior
students council, is continuing to provide an effective and
satisfying service to the students and staff. We are anticipating
a substantial upgrading of the cafeteria facilities to further
improve this function.
Our extra-curricular scene has been very exciting and
impressive this year, with outstanding accomplishment in
sports, the fine arts and other activities. We appreciate all
the students, teachers and other persons who have assisted
with coaching and supervising various events during the year.
Our instructional program, with its breadth of academic and
vocational-type courses, need periodic assessment in terms of
value to students and congruence with school and community
objectives.
Again, thanks to our Yearbook Committee and their advisor,
Mr. Hart, for another quality production.

In recent decades teamwork has become not only a popular topic for public discussion, but also the focus of numerous scientific insights. The abundance of publications on this subject suggests that organizing teamwork has become one of the phenomena of organi‑ zational activity. On the other hand, based on his numerous research, the author of the paper raises the question of whether the concept of teamwork analysed in such publications is studied within the framework of scientific concepts. For instance, some authors believe that the only distinguishing feature of a team is an efficiently working group; the formation of the team is a long‑term process and to achieve this the group needs to undergo several stages of development (Hersey, Blanchard, Tuckman, Jensen, Katzenbach, Smith, Liker, Kasiulis, Barvydienė, Savanavičienė, Šilingienė, Gražulis); other authors use these concepts as synonyms (Boddy, Peiton) and analyse them in the context of formal and informal sta‑ tus. Thus, the concept of effective and ineffective teams has become the additional object of the research. Numerous researchers limit their research to the analysis of functional roles within well‑established teams (Benne, Sheats), at the same time neglecting the impact of personality traits on the activity of the work group. Specialists do not agree on the team size (Manz, Sims, Miller, Stoner et. al.), purpose (Meskon, Katzenbach, Smith, Sakalas et. al.), and periodically arising constraints on the team development and the like. As a result, scholars and practitioners perceive the issues of team work differently, thus they often talk at cross purposes. The author of the paper believes that it is expedient to consider the information collected up to now on the topic of teamwork within the overall context of the development of management science, which at the same time would provide for the development of conceptual theoretical proposals for scientific teamwork models (systems).Autor artykułu na podstawie swoich badań dotyczących pracy zespołowej zadaje pytanie, czy w literaturze przedmiotu bada się tę pracę jako system koncepcji naukowej? Tuckman i M.A.C.
Zircon geochronology and tephra glass compositions from Atitlán caldera (Guatemala)
Here, we present zircon geochronology and tephra/glass compositions from four explosive Pleistocene eruptions of the Atitlán caldera in Guatemala. Our datasets encompass zircon 238U-230Th disequilibrium, U-Pb, and (U-Th)/He geochronology, analyzed using a CAMECA IMS 1280-HR secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) at Heidelberg University, Germany, alongside noble-gas and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) at Curtin University, Australia. Major and trace element compositions of glass shards were determined through electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) at GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and by laser ablation ICPMS at the Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica in Taipei. Whole-rock U-series analyses were carried out using a ThermoFisher Neptune multi-collector ICPMS at the University of Wyoming (UWYO, USA)
Vector Autoregression Models (VAR) - Response to Criticism Structural Econometric Models
In seventies, structural models were subjected to the criticism more and more. In the article the author presented reasons of the criticism of structural models and theoretical bases of vector autoregression models which was introduced in article C. A. Sims in 1980. An example of using VAR models was also expressed for the modelling of macroeconomic variables. In the summary the author described defects and virtues of VAR models in the context of the structural attempt at the econometric modelling
On informativeness of Granger-causality tests
The purpose of this paper is to show that the application of Granger-causality tests is not informative unless one possesses additional theoretical knowledge. Previous criticism on Granger-causality testing pointed out mostly the differences between the common sense understanding of causality and Granger’s definition. The author demonstrates that Granger’s definition of causality is philosophically justified. However, the use of its tests is misleading due to: data non-linearity, too low sampling rate, time series cointegration, thirdvariable fallacy, non-linear causal dependency, and the rational expectations of economic agents. It can be said that the fallibility of Granger-causality testing described in the literature makes drawing conclusions about the existence and direction of causal relationship possible only if the researcher applying a Grangercausality test has knowledge of the mechanism connecting the two time [email protected]ła Główna HandlowaAshrafulla S., Haldar J., Joshi A., Leahy R. 2012 Canonical Granger causality applied to functional brain data, „Biomedical Imaging”, 9, IEEE International Symposium on IEEE.Beebee H. 2009 Introduction, [in:] The Oxford Handbook of Causation, H. Teaching pronunciation as a volunteer ESL tutor: Determining needs and designing support
The demand for English instruction surpasses the availability of trained professionals and affordable programs as increasing numbers of immigrants and other international visitors to the U.S. seek out opportunities to improve their English language skills (Henrichson, 2010). To help meet this need, many community programs—often staffed entirely by volunteers—offer classes in a variety of informal settings. In most programs, however, the key qualification for volunteer tutors is simply that they are native speakers of English and are willing to share their time to help others (Henrichsen, 2010; Pennycook & Coutand-Marin, 2003; Snow, 2006). In other words, most volunteers have no professional preparation in teaching ESL .
This ultimate aim of this study was to develop professional development resources—specifically in the area of pronunciation—designed for those who volunteer in adult ESL programs, but who have little/no professional training in ESL. Interviews were conducted with 20 volunteer tutors and 11 adult ESL students to assess their knowledge and attitudes about pronunciation teaching and learning. The interview findings were considered in conjunction with current research in pronunciation pedagogy to develop a program that would provide volunteers with a research-based foundation in pronunciation pedagogy that would ultimately help them provide more effective support for their students.
The resulting program has a flexible structure to accommodate the realities of a community program staffed by busy volunteers. The program is designed to span several months and includes resources for an introductory workshop, scripts for a series of short video tutorials about a variety of pronunciation topics, and accompanying print materials to use with students.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2020-08-01The student, Linda Sims, accepted the attached license on 2018-07-10 at 17:23.The student, Linda Sims, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2018-07-10 at 17:41.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2018-07-12 at 15:34.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12811 on 2018-09-27 at 11:36:45Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-27T16:47:30Z (GMT). Zircon petrochronology and tephra compositions of the last four explosive eruptions from Ilopango caldera (El Salvador)
Here we present zircon petrochronological data, tephra whole-rock/glass compositions, and amphibole thermobarometry comprising the last four explosive eruptions of Ilopango Caldera in El Salvador (Tierra Blanca eruptive suite, TB). Our datasets include 238U-230Th disequilibrium geochronology, trace-elements, and oxygen isotope compositions from polished and unpolished zircon crystals analyzed using a CAMECA IMS 1280-HR secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) at Heidelberg University, Germany. Additionally, pumice clasts whole-rock chemical analyses from the TB suite were performed at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) using a PANalytical AXIOS Advanced wavelength-dispersive spectrometer, whereas major and trace-elements, glass shard, and mineral compositions were collected using an electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) at GEOMAR - Helmholtz-Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at Institute of Earth Sciences, Academia Sinica in Taipei. Whole-rock Sr-Nd isotope determinations were carried out at Departamento de Geología, Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE; Mexico) with a Nu-Instruments thermal ionization mass spectrometer (Nu-TIMS), whereas whole-rock U-series were determined using a ThermoFisher Neptune inductively-coupled mass-spectrometer multi-collector (ICP-MS-MC) at the University of Wyoming (UWYO, USA)
