    Dream House on the Prairie

    No full text
Dream House on the Prairie is an architect’s journey through several decades, with candid accounts of what went wrong—and what went right—in reconstructing a deteriorating century-old farmhouse. The author reflects on dealing with contractors, carpenters, and crafts persons, and the impact that various tumultuous construction projects had on the family. He recounts experimentations with passive solar design, natural ventilation, wind energy, geo-thermal systems, openings between living spaces, and extensive visual connections to the exterior. This book is published as Osterberg, A. Can foreign exchange intervention signal monetary policy changes?

    No full text
An examination of the ability of foreign exchange intervention to signal upcoming changes in monetary policy, showing that for such a signaling mechanism to make sense, the link between intervention and monetary policy should be clear, the implied policy should be credible, and information about intervention should be communicated accurately to market participants.Foreign exchange - Law and legislation ; Monetary policy

Nurturing the Mind through Environmental Stimuli

    No full text
The dictionary defines nurture as "the act or process of raising or promoting the development of; training; rearing; upbringing" . Nurture also means "to feed" and "to nourish" (Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, 1977 edition) . Nurturing the mind involves a proper balance of internal and external stimuli. The nurturing of crops also has internal and external stimuli and has a number of interesting parallels to the nurturing of students in the architectural design studio. The author will examine these parallels in order to increase the reader's awareness of successful nurturing methods and techniques on the part of the studio instructor. The characteristics of a supportive "nurturing" environment are discussed in the paper through a series of analogies to the planting and raising of crops. It is the hoped that an increased understanding of the nature of nurturing will aid design educators in the classroom. This presentation is published as Osterberg, A.E., Nurturing the Mind Through Environmental Stimuli, presented at ACSA Western Regional Meeting, held at Colifornia State Polytechnic Univeristy Pomona, A October 1988. https://www.acsa-arch.org/. A Comparison of Four Passive Solar Residences

    No full text
Four passive solar houses in Iowa designed by the author are described and compared in this paper . The f1rst two residences discussed employ one lane lap pools just inside south walls of glass. The first example is an old fannhouse which has been added onto and retrofitted. The design and perfonnance of the house is compared to that of the second example, a newly constructed sup er insulated residence. The third house incorporates a direct gain addition to an existing residence. A so1Jth facing wall was removed to create a large open interior space. The fourth desiqn is an example of a sun space addition to an existing house and employs doorways and automatic dampers to transfer heat from the sunspace to the house. This paper is published as Osterberg, A.E. New results on the rationality of survey measures of exchange-rate expectations

    No full text
In light of research questioning the usefulness of economists' models of exchange-rate determination, this paper investigates the rationality of survey measures of expectations for Deutschmark/dollar exchange rates for 1989-97. Using Liu and Maddala's (1992) "restricted cointegration" test, the author cannot reject the assumption that survey measures are unbiased exchange-rate forecasts. This finding is related to market participants' anticipation of the impact of economic policies.Foreign exchange rates ; Rational expectations (Economic theory)

This invention relates to optical energy transmitting devices and to a method of making same. More particularly, the invention relates to thin elongated optical devices of novel construction and arrangement for enabling the efficient separate or simultaneous transmission, as desired, of optical energy in the form of different independent but readily distinguishable electromagnet modes of energy propagation from one end thereof to the other in accordance with the character of light being received from suitable light source means disposed adjacent one end thereof for transmission to suitable receiving and detecting means disposed adjacent the opposite end thereof. The invention also includes the method of making same

Recent cross-section, diffractive and forward multiplicity measurements with TOTEM

    No full text
TOTEM is dedicated experiment at the LHC to the measurements of total cross-section, elastic scattering and diffraction. Elastically and diffractively scattered protons are measured in Roman Pots and charged particles by the T1 and T2 telescopes in the pseudorapidity range 3.1 to 6.5. TOTEM has measured the luminosity-independent total, elastic and inelastic proton-proton cross- sections at √ s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV using low-pileup runs with a dedicated β ∗ = 90 m optics. At √ s = 7 TeV, the cross-sections were also determined using the CMS luminosity giving results that are in excellent agreement with the luminosity-independent ones, despite having very different systematic dependencies. Moreover, since TOTEM is capable to detect diffractive events with masses down to 3.4 GeV, a limit on the cross section for low mass diffraction has been set from the difference between the overall inelastic cross section (measured only using elastic scattering) and visible inelastic cross section (measured using T1 and T2). The differential elastic proton- proton cross section has been measured over a wide range in | t | for √ s = 7 TeV. TOTEM has also determined double diffractive cross-section in the forward region at √ s = 7 TeV as well as studied soft single diffraction. In addition, TOTEM has performed an inclusive forward charged particle pseudorapdity density measurement in 7 TeV proton-proton collisions for the range 5.3 < | η | < 6.4 using T2. Next, TOTEM will together with CMS measure the charged particle pseudorapidity density at √ s = 8 TeV simultaneously in the central (CMS tracker) and forward (T2) region
