Medical Imaging: Image Processing, K. M. Hanson, ed. Posterior sampling with improved efficiency
The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique provides a means to generate a random sequence of model realizations that sample the posterior probability distribution of a Bayesian analysis. That sequence may be used to make inferences about the model uncertainties that derive from measurement uncertainties. This paper presents an approach to improving the efficiency of the Metropolis approach to MCMC by incorporating an approximation to the covariance matrix of the posterior distribution. The covariance matrix is approximated using the update formula from the BFGS quasi-Newton optimization algorithm. Examples are given for uncorrelated and correlated multidimensional Gaussian posterior distributions

Realization of a multinode quantum network of remote solid-state qubits
The distribution of entangled states across the nodes of a future quantum internet will unlock fundamentally new technologies. Here, we report on the realization of a three-node entanglement-based quantum network. We combine remote quantum nodes based on diamond communication qubits into a scalable phase-stabilized architecture, supplemented with a robust memory qubit and local quantum logic. In addition, we achieve real-time communication and feed-forward gate operations across the network. We demonstrate two quantum network protocols without postselection: the distribution of genuine multipartite entangled states across the three nodes and entanglement swapping through an intermediary node. Our work establishes a key platform for exploring, testing, and developing multinode quantum network protocols and a quantum network control stack.Accepted Author ManuscriptQID/Hanson LabALG/GeneralBUS/Quantum DelftQID/Wehner GroupQuantum Internet DivisionQuantum Information and SoftwareQN/Hanson La
Distributed entanglement and teleportation on a quantum network
We report on the realization of a multi-node quantum network. Using the network, we have demonstrated three protocols; generation of a entangled state shared by all nodes, entanglement swapping and quantum teleportation between non-neighboring nodes.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.QID/Hanson LabQCD/Vandersypen LabALG/GeneralBUS/Quantum DelftQID/Wehner GroupQN/Borregaard groepQuantum Computer ScienceQN/Hanson La
Coastal erosion at Hai Hau beach in the Red River Delta, Vietnam
Many coastal areas in Vietnam suffer from erosion. One of the worst affected areas is the Hai Hau beach, located in the Red River delta in northern Vietnam. Over the last hundred years, vast parts of the beach have eroded at an average rate of approximately 25 m per year. Important agricultural land has vanished into the sea and families have been forced to abandon their houses because of the erosion is not explained but suggested reasons are for example dam construction, weak dikes and unfavourable hydrodynamic conditions The wave climate, and thus the sediment transport, in northernVietnam is highly dependent on the two main wind directions from the northeast and the south, because of the winter and ) summer monsoon, respectively . Vietnam is also.subject to sporadic typhoons that cause great damage when they strike the coast, especially in combination with storm surges. Based on a 20-year long wind record from 1976 to 1995, obtained from two islands outside the coast of northern Vietnam, the longshore transport rate over these years was determined by a one dimensional numerical wave model. The model consists of three independent parts: offshore waves, nearshore waves and -longshore sediment transport. This model indicates a southward-directed transport along the Hai Hau beach. In addition, sea maps and satellite photos from the 20th century were compared in order to find out the historic shoreline development generally. The main protection method that is generally used in Vietnam, as well as in Hai Hau district, is sea dikes. These dikes consist of an earth core covered by a revetment layer of cobbles. Unfortunately, these dikes are not strong enough to withstand the impact of harsh waves for any longer periods. Historically, a line of sea dikes has been destroyed at least once every decade. A couple of hundred meters behind the front sea dike typically lies another dike, ready to meet the waves when the first one breaches. Consequently, this defence arrangement is often recognized as a double dike system, but also as a retreat strategy since the erosion problem is not solved, just slowed down. The major cause of erosion is likely not due to human activities (such as dam buildings,or river cut-offs), instead because of the natural properties of Hai Hau coastal area, seasonally bounded longshore currents in combination with weak sea dikes favour erosion.KWP-collectio

Medical Imaging: Image Processing, K. M. Hanson, ed. Uncertainties in tomographic reconstructions based on deformable models
Deformable geometric models fit very naturally into the context of Bayesian analysis. The prior probability of boundary shapes is taken to proportional to the negative exponential of the deformation energy used to control the boundary. This probabilistic interpretation is demonstrated using a Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) technique, which permits one to generate configurations that populate the prior. One of many uses for deformable models is to solve ill-posed tomographic reconstruction problems, which we demonstrate by reconstructing a two-dimensional object from two orthogonal noisy projections. We show how MCMC samples drawn from the posterior can be used to estimate uncertainties in the location of the edge of the reconstructed object

2D/3D registration makes it possible to use pre-operative CT scans during X-ray fluoroscopy guided interventions for navigation purposes. For this registration task a fast voxel-based method is presented, which uses a recently introduced similarity measure (pattern intensity). This measure is especially suitable for 2D/3D registration, because it is robust with respect to structures as, for instance, a stent visible in the X-ray fluoroscopy image but not in the CT scan. The method uses only a part of the CT scan for the generation of digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) to accelerate their computation. Nevertheless, computation time is crucial for intra-operative application, because numerous DRRs must be computed. The suitability of different volume rendering methods for 2D/3D registration has been investigated therefore. A method based on the shear-warp factorization turned out to be especially suitable and builds the basis of the registration algorithm. The algorithm has been applied to images of a spine phantom and to clinical images. For comparison, registration results have been calculated using ray-casting. The shear-warp factorization based rendering method accelerates registration by a factor of up to seven compared to ray-casting without degrading registration accuracy. Using a vertebra as a feature for registration, computation time is in the range of 3-4s (Sun UltraSparc, 300MHz) which is acceptable for intra-operative application
