Polymer/TiO2Nanorod Nanocomposite Optical Memristor Device
Modulation of resistive switching memory by light opens the route to new optoelectronic devices that can be controlled both optically and electronically. Applications include integrated circuits with memory elements switchable by light and neuromorphic computing with optically reconfigurable and tunable synaptic circuits. We report on a unique nanocomposite resistive switching material and device made from a low concentration (μ0.1% by mass) of titanium dioxide nanorods (TiO2-NRs) embedded within the azobenzene polymer, poly(disperse red 1 acrylate, PDR1A). The device exhibits both reversible electronic memristor switching and reversible polarization-dependent optical switching. Optical irradiation by circularly polarized light causes a trans-cis photochemical isomerization that modifies the conformation and orientation of the photoactive azo-unit within the polymer. The resulting expansion of the composite (PDR1A/TiO2-NR) polymer film modifies the conduction pathway, facilitated by the presence of the TiO2-NRs, as a semiconductor material, through the (PDR1A/TiO2-NR) polymer film, which provides a sensitive means to control resistive switching in the device. The effect is reversible by changing the polarization state of the incident light. A charge-flux memristor model successfully reproduces the current-voltage hysteresis loops and threshold switching properties of the device, as well as the effect of the illumination on the electrical characteristics
Migration of the Antarctic Polar Front through the mid-Pleistocene transition: evidence and climatic implications
The Antarctic Polar Front is an important biogeochemical divider in the Southern Ocean. Laminated diatom mat deposits record episodes of massive flux of the diatom Thalassiothrix antarctica beneath the Antarctic Polar Front and provide a marker for tracking the migration of the Front through time. Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1091, 1093 and 1094 are the only deep piston cored record hitherto sampled from the sediments of the circumpolar biogenic opal belt. Mapping of diatom mat deposits between these sites indicates a glacial-interglacial front migration of up to 6 degrees of latitude in the early / mid Pleistocene. The mid Pleistocene transition marks a stepwise minimum 7 degree northward migration of the locus of the Polar Front sustained for about 450 kyr until an abrupt southward return to a locus similar to its modern position and further south than any mid-Pleistocene locus. This interval from a “900 ka event” that saw major cooling of the oceans and a ?13C minimum through to the 424 ka Mid-Brunhes Event at Termination V is also seemingly characterised by 1) sustained decreased carbonate in the subtropical south Atlantic, 2) reduced strength of Antarctic deep meridional circulation, 3) lower interglacial temperatures and lower interglacial atmospheric CO2 levels (by some 30 per mil) than those of the last 400 kyr, evidencing less complete deglaciation. This evidence is consistent with a prolonged period lasting 450 kyr of only partial ventilation of the deep ocean during interglacials and suggests that the mechanisms highlighted by recent hypotheses linking mid-latitude atmospheric conditions to the extent of deep ocean ventilation and carbon sequestration over glacial-interglacial cycles are likely in operation during the longer time scale characteristic of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. The cooling that initiated the “900 ka event” may have been driven by minima in insolation amplitude related to eccentricity modulation of precession that also affected low latitude climates as marked by threshold changes in the African monsoon system. The major thresholds in earth system behaviour through the Mid-Pleistocene Transition were likely governed by an interplay of the 100 kyr and 400 kyr eccentricity modulation of precession
De kosten van een zandsuppletie op het strand van de Kop van Goeree uitgevoerd met behulp van de zogenaamde "Punaise"
In het 1e deel van het afstudeerverslag van A.H. van Berk (lit. 1) werd de vraag gesteld of een baggersysteem voor het kustonderhoud van de Kop van Goeree met de punaise (fig. 0) in één van de wingebieden A, B of C (fig. 2) kan konkurreren met een systeem met een cutterzuiger in wingebied E. Voor het antwoord op deze vraag zijn de kosten van zowel de uitvoering met de punaise als die met de cutterzuiger bepaald. Deze kosten zijn omgerekend naar de gemiddelde jaarlijkse kosten voor het kustonderhoud en onderling vergeleken. Chua mem-components for adaptive RF metamaterials
Chua's mem-components are ideal for creating adaptive metasurfaces for manipulating EM waves given that they hold their state without external biases. In this paper, we propose a generic adaptive reactive element that is in fact a memcapacitor/meminductor. This element makes use of a polymer that demonstrates reversible trans-cis photochemical isomerization, thus making it possible to change the distance between two conductive plates by up to 25%. Furthermore, a design methodology for utilizing these devices is presented
Single-Case Research Designs and Report Writing at Undergraduate Level

Introduction: Psychological science is undergoing a period of change and transformation.
Statement of the Problem: The crisis in confidence over psychological science has led to an emphasis on larger and larger sample sizes, sustaining an unfortunate neglect of single-subject research designs in undergraduate education.
Literature review:
We identified several excellent articles advocating for the benefits of single-subject and small N designs over group-based research designs, yet single-case designs are seldom taught at undergraduate level.
Teaching Implications: Teachers of psychology are provided with resources for implementing training in single case research designs at undergraduate level, enabling students to draw objective conclusions in an N-of-1 research report. We do this using an example from a recently developed module on wellbeing science.
Conclusion: Embedding an underused methodological approach for determining objective change in single individuals into undergraduate psychology curricula will help to develop practical skills applicable to many roles in the discipline of psychology, the healthcare sector and the quantified-self community
