Oral History Interview with Mary Jean Tanner, December 30, 2004

    No full text
The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Mary Jean Tanner. Tanner joined the Army after working as a civilian in a parts warehouse at Kelly Field. She was given special clearance to handle the Norden bombsight. Upon enlisting in the Army, she was sent to Algiers, as secretary to General Sables. She was the only woman in the chemical warfare unit there. The water in Algiers had been so badly contaminated by air raids as to be deemed unsafe, even for bathing. One evening, while she was sitting on her bed, a 90mm high-explosive dud landed where her chest would have been, had she been lying down. Later, an ammunition boat exploded near her office, shattering her window and covering her in glass. Tanner returned home and was discharged in the fall of 1943. As a result of her experiences abroad, she experienced extreme anxiety during thunderstorms, hiding in the closet. And she never told anyone that she had been a WAC, as she felt that women were looked down upon for having served

Sen and the art of educational maintenance: evidencing a capability, as opposed to an effectiveness, approach to schooling

    No full text
There are few more widely applied terms in common parlance than ‘capability’. It is used (inaccurately) to represent everything from the aspiration to provide opportunity to notions of innate academic ability, with everything in between claiming apostolic succession to Amartya Sen, who (with apologies to Aristotle) first developed the concept. This paper attempts to warrant an adaptation of Sen’s capability theory to schooling and schooling policy, and to proof his concepts in the new setting using research involving 100 pupils from 5 English secondary schools and a schedule of questions derived from the capability literature. The findings suggest that a capability approach can provide an alternative to the dominant Benthamite school effectiveness paradigm, and can offer a sound theoretical framework for understanding better the assumed relationship between schooling and well-being

Book Review of "Architecture of Happiness" by Alain de Botton. Pantheon Books, New York.

    No full text
De Botton’s book is an exploration (often philosophical and poetical) of architecture and its contribution to human wellbeing. At the heart of this lyrical, often humorous and beautifully illustrated book is a clearly articulated insight into the complex and dynamic transactions that occur between humans and the buildings that they design, construct and choose to inhabit. In paraphrasing John Ruskin, de Botton suggests that humans seek two things from their buildings - “We want them to shelter us. And we want them to speak to us …of whatever we find important and need to be reminded of” (p.62). This metaphor of dialogue, conversation and the eloquence of structure is a central thread upon which the author frequently returns and elaborates

The Bachelor paper «Robert Walser`s «Geschwister Tanner» as a Bildungsroman has the aim to interprete Walser`s novel as a Bildungsroman. The paper explores the development of the terms «Bildungsroman» and «Entwicklungsroman» over the 18th, 19th and 20th century. It also includes a short biography of the Swiss author Robert Walser. In the third part of the Bachelor paper, the novel "Geschwister Tanner" is analyzed closely and the focus is on the development opportunities of the protagonist and deals with the question if he takes his chances. The conclusion of the paper is that the protagonist Simon Tanner fails to go through a positive development. Despite his many ideas he fails to realize them
