Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter
Name of the author: Jiří Smetana Name of the MA thesis: Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter University: Charles University in Prague Faculty: Faculty of Arts Department: Institute of the Germanic Studies Supervisor: Doc. PhDr. Milan Tvrdík, CSc. Place and date of publishing: Prague, March 2011 The subject of the present work is Adalbert Stifter's utopia. The aim is to outline its main essence and in part describe the motives that had led Stifter to his utopia. The work describes the artistic, political and social background of the Biedermeier era and approximates Stifter as its principal representative in Austrian literature. Adalbert Stifter's talent was versatile; he had affection for nature and art. Art was one of his most faithful friends. Stifter's Biedermeier literary works are original and in a certain sense possess great depth. For every opinion in these works is put down rationally. In this regard we would be hard pressed to find selfcontent in Stifter's late work. This opinion is also shared by the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger, who regards Adalbert Stifter higher than Johann Wolfgang Goethe for this very reason. As Rosegger rightly states, Stifter's style is also very original.1 This work takes note of the utopian features in some of Stifter's short stories and in his educational..
Adalbert Stifter and his relation to the Czech Bohemian forest
Adalbert Stifter´s works are connected with his home and origin. The nature of South Bohemia and the Bohemian Forest are not only local but historical elements of his works. His realism does not only describe but also critically portrays life of the people living in this surrounding. An analysis will be done on the basis of three tales: Der Hochwald, Der beschriebene Tännling and Der Waldgänger. The analysis literary processes the plot and life in the Bohemian Forest. The first part focuses on selected works and their connection to the life of the author. It summarizes his life from his youth to his early adulthood. The second part deals with the belief in God which is an important element of Stifter´s works. The third part focuses on author´s criticism of people´s treatment of nature. This bachelor thesis will be written in Czech

The Philosophy of Education of Adalbert Stifter as Reflected in Der Nachsommer
Der Nachsommer is one of the best and most well-known novels of the nineteenth century Austrian author and educator, Adalbert Stifter. Because nearly all the characters of Der Nachsommer are directly or indirectly connected with the process of education, this work lends itself especially well towards interpretation as an Erziehungsroman (i.e., a novel dealing with education.) There are a few other, and shorter, works by Stifter in which he also deals with his ideas of education, but this paper will purposely concentrate only on this, his major educational and literary work, as his other works give additional examples, but do not contribute significant new insights into his philosophy of education
The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter
Petrusová, Kateřina (2011): The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter. Prague: Institute of Germanic Studies, Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. This thesis deals with the role of children at the work of Adalbert Stifter, an Austrian author of the first half of the 19th century, born in Horni Plana (Oberplan) in Southern Bohemia. Adalbert Stifter was not just a writer and a painter but also a pedagogue (he worked as a supervisor of elementary schools for Upper Austria). All these activities, in association with his life experience and personal problems, were reflected in his literary work. I mainly focus on his three works: collections Studies (Studien), Colored Stones (Bunte Steine) and the novel (Bildungsroman) Indian Summer (Der Nachsommer). Childhood already appears in his early work, considered as a period of human development (Menschenwerdung). In Stifter's later stories, for example in his collection Bunte Steine, the characters of children are at the forefront: they are always confronted with the adult world and especially with the powerful laws of nature. This relationship is formulated in the foreword to this collection in the form of Stifter's gentle law (das sanfte Gesetz). The whole concept of the child is completed in the novel Der Nachsommer, where a..
Commissioning of the New Beam Halo Monitoring System for the CMS Experiment
A new Beam Halo Monitor (BHM) detector system has been installed in the CMS
cavern to measure the machine-induced background (MIB) from the LHC. This back-
ground originates from interactions of the primary beam halo with the nal set of
collimators before the CMS experiment and from beam gas interactions. The BHM
detector uses the directional nature of Cherenkov radiation and event timing to select
particles coming from the direction of the beam and to suppress those originating from
the interaction point. It consists of 40 quartz cylinders, placed on each side of the CMS
detector, coupled to UV-sensitive PMTs. For each bunch crossing, the PMT signal is
digitized by a charge integrating ASIC and the arrival time of the signal is recorded.
The data are processed in real time to yield a precise measurement of per-bunch-crossing
MIB rate for each beam. This measurement is made available to CMS and the LHC,
in order to provide real-time feedback on the beam quality and improve the e ciency
of data taking. The BHM detector is now in the commissioning phase, and rst results
have been obtained.Stifter, Kelly. (2015). Commissioning of the New Beam Halo Monitoring System for the CMS Experiment. Retrieved from the University Digital Conservancy, https://hdl.handle.net/11299/174970
Player agency in interactive narrative: audience, actor & author
The question motivating this review paper is, how can
computer-based interactive narrative be used as a constructivist learn-
ing activity? The paper proposes that player agency can be used to
link interactive narrative to learner agency in constructivist theory,
and to classify approaches to interactive narrative. The traditional
question driving research in interactive narrative is, ‘how can an in-
teractive narrative deal with a high degree of player agency, while
maintaining a coherent and well-formed narrative?’ This question
derives from an Aristotelian approach to interactive narrative that,
as the question shows, is inherently antagonistic to player agency.
Within this approach, player agency must be restricted and manip-
ulated to maintain the narrative. Two alternative approaches based
on Brecht’s Epic Theatre and Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed are
reviewed. If a Boalian approach to interactive narrative is taken the
conflict between narrative and player agency dissolves. The question
that emerges from this approach is quite different from the traditional
question above, and presents a more useful approach to applying in-
teractive narrative as a constructivist learning activity
Automatic morphological analysis and interlinking of historical Irish cognate verb forms
The main aim of the author’s research project is to use computational approaches
to gain more insight into the historical development of Irish verbs. One of the objectives is to investigate how a link between the electronic Dictionary of the Irish
language (eDIL),1 covering the period c. 700–c. 1700, but focussing on Early Irish
(7th–12th centuries), and the nascent Foclóir Stairiúil na Gaeilge ‘The Historical
Dictionary of Irish’,
2 covering the period 1600–2000, could be implemented. Such
a link will be hugely beneficial for scholars operating at the intersection of the medieval and modern period (see Table 1), who currently lack a comprehensive lexical resource for the “intermediate” early modern period. This paper stems from research carried out during a
Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship (GOIPG/2017/1808) funded by
the Irish Research Council. The author would also like to acknowledge the
anonymous reviewer for helpful feedback and the editors for seeing this publication through.Peer reviewe
Intercultural and National Aspects in the Literary Work of Adalbert Stifter: Concerning the Question of Regional and National Literature
Téma této diplomové práce pojednává o interkulturních a národnostních aspektech v literárním díle Adalberta Stiftera k otázce regionální a národní literatury. ObhájenoThe topic of this thesis deals with intercultural and national aspects in the literary work of Adalbert Stifter regarding the question of regional and national literature. Initially, the author focuses on the life of the writer Adalbert Stifter, specifically his childhood and period of study. She then discusses the author's literary output, where brief attention is paid to several of his works, especially the historical novel Witiko and the short story Bergkristall. The author also addresses the question of regional literature, to which the writer is classified as part of Bohemian Forest literature. At the same time, the author presents the cultural situation of the 19th century, more precisely the mutual relationship between Czechs and Germans in the Czech lands. The analysis of Adalbert Stifter's work is part of this thesis, where the author will search for intercultural and national aspects, which will be commented upon and from which a conclusion will be drawn in relation to the question of the national aspect of his work
