Keith Thomas: el historiador y la felicidad
David Wootton, profesor en la Universidad de York, repasa para el Times londinense la última obra de Keith Thomas, The Ends of Life. Roads to fulfilment in early modern England (OUP).
Manners and Civilization in Early Modern England (Yale UP), del veterano Keith Thomas.

Some aspects of sulphur in organic synthesis
The development of novel synthetic methods in organic chemistry is important for it allows the construction of complex molecules by new routes. Studies were made on the anion derived from 3-dimethylamino-lphenylthioprop-l-ene with the view to developing a new a,8-unsaturated acyl anion equivalent. A new route to substituted 1,3-bis(phenylthio) alk-l-enes was discovered and is described in Chapter One. Chapter Two describes new approaches to cyclopent-2-enones. 1-Phenylthio-2-(phenylthiomethyl)cyclopent-l-ene was prepared and the anion of this reacted with a number of electrophiles. Alkylated products were hydrolysed with mercuric chloride providing a cyclopentanone-2methylidene anion equivalent and, potentially, a new general route to cyclopent-2-enones.Pyrindicin, a fungal metabolite of biological interest, is the topic of Chapter Three. The attempted synthesis of this alkaloid by several routes was not successful.</p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
