Professor Kees van der Heijden : commentary on Rowland and Spaniol (2021)

    No full text
Working with Kees as his apprentice scenario planner, I have been fortunate to have participated in many scenario workshops, both on the Strathclyde MBA program and with organizations. Alongside these workshops, I am also very privileged to have been an assistant to Kees on a number of scenario projects with organizations in a range of countries. I have learned many things in the time spent with Kees, and consider his book, "Scenarios: The Art of Strategic Conversation" to be the definitive field guide to the art and craft of scenario planning, albeit there have been a plethora of books on the subject since. The objective of this commentary is to discuss from a practical perspective, three things I have learned from my years of experience with Kees which have proved useful in my scenario work with client organizations, namely the elicitation of client views and insights, the value of the "Business Idea" and the scenario development timescal

    Access Control and Service-Oriented Architectures.

Access Control and Service-Oriented Architectures" investigates in which way logical access control can be achieved effectively, in particular in highly dynamic environments such as service-oriented architectures (SOA's). The author combines state-of-the-art best-practice and projects these onto the SOA. In doing so, he identifies strengths of current approaches, but also pinpoints weaknesses. These weaknesses are subsequently mitigated by introducing an innovative new framework called EFSOC. The framework is validated empirically and preliminary implementations are discussed.

Paths to justice in the Netherlands: looking for signs of social exclusion

    No full text
In 2003 Genn's Paths to Justice study for the UK was replicated in the Netherlands. A survey was held among 3.500 citizens into their experiences with problems for which there might be a legal solution. The data were collected by internet questionnaires, which were addressed to a random sample of an internet panel. In this paper we present some major findings on: (1) the incidence of justiciable problems within the population; (2) the kind of strategies people choose to solve their problems; (3) the outcome of different strategies for resolving justiciable problems; (4) the public's perceptions of the legal system. More specifically, we study differences with respect to age, marital status, educational level, income level and social class, in order to shed some light on the role and scope of social exclusion. Our results suggest that access to justice in the Netherlands is not so much restricted by the supply of legal advice and the organisation of the legal system, as well as by insufficient social-psychological capabilities of the citizens concerned.Legal procedure, legal system, social exclusion

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science in 1983 and followed that with a M.Sc. degree in animal nutrition in 1985, both from the Agricultural University in Wageningen, The Netherlands. He then moved to Canada to study with Dr. Willem C. Sauer at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, AB, Canada), graduating with a Ph.D. in animal nutrition in 1988. For 3 yr, he was employed as a Swine Nutritionist and Research and Technical Service Manager with Ralston‐Purina Canada in Woodstock, ON, Canada. In 1992, he joined the Prairie Swine Centre (Saskatoon, SK, Canada) as a Research Scientist – Nutrition before moving back to Ontario to join the faculty in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science of the University of Guelph in 1994. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998 and then to Full Professor in 2003, a position he held until his death from melanoma on August 1, 2016.This is a manuscript of an article published as Patience, J. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
