Capsalidae Baird, 1853 Entobdellinae Bychowsky, 1957 Type genus: Entobdella Blainville in Lamarck, 1818 Other genera: Listrocephalos Bullard, Payne & Braswell, 2004; Neoentobdella Kearn & Whittington, 2005; Pseudoentobdella Yamaguti, 1963; a new genus proposed and defined below. Comments. The diagnosis for the Entobdellinae was emended by Kearn & Whittington (2005). Branchobdella n. gen. Type and only species: Branchobdella pugetensis (Robinson, 1961) comb. nov. Etymology: Reflects branchial (gill) microhabitat, compared with preference for skin in most Entobdella spp. Diagnosis: With features of the Capsalidae sensu Yamaguti (1963) and Entobdellinae sensu Kearn & Whittington (2005). Median haptor sclerites large relative to haptor size. Ventral haptor surface lacking papillae. Marginal valve present, conspicuous. Tendons entering haptor from body musculature attach to proximal end of anterior hamuli. Anterior attachment apparatus comprising 1 pair of elongate, anterolateral adhesive pads; each pad subdivided into 3 areas. Two reservoirs for male accessory gland secretion, 1 inside, 1 outside sac enclosing male copulatory organ. Posterior (proximal) wall of sac thick, probably muscular. Male copulatory organ a penis. Vagina short, straight, not convoluted. Vaginal opening posterior to excretory pore and ootype. No seminal receptacles communicating with ovo-vitelline duct (needs confirmation in sectioned material). Glands of Goto present. Entobdella rosaceus Crane 1972
Entobdella rosaceus Crane, 1972 (Fig. 15K) Crane's (1972) description is based on a single specimen from the skin of a round-bodied host, the pink seaperch, Zalembius rosaceus. Reference to the holotype (broken transversely into an anterior and posterior half) reveals some errors. The whole animal is shown in Crane's fig. 1 and with reference to the haptor this is a ventral view. However, the common genital opening is shown on the right margin of the body. In the text the common genital opening is said to be located on the left body margin, as in other entobdellines, and our observations on the holotype confirm that this is the correct location of the common genital opening in E. rosaceus. In Crane's fig. 2, the uterus is incorrectly labelled "vagina" and the ootype is mislabelled as "uterus". The vagina is not illustrated and we were unable to find it in the holotype. Seminal receptacles are hard to resolve but at least 2 and possibly 4 are present. Glands of Goto and eyes are present. Crane claimed that E. rosaceus is the only species of Entobdella in which the "posterior anchor" (= posterior hamulus) has a "long, thin root" extending anteriorly. We confirmed the observation of Klassen et al. (1989) that this anterior root is not part of the sclerite. Papillae are present on the ventral haptor surface. Entobdella Blainville in Lamarck, 1818 Type species: Entobdella hippoglossi (Müller, 1776) Blainville, 1818 [see synonyms listed below under E. hippoglossi]. Other species: E. brattstroemi Brinkmann, 1952a [syn. E. hippoglossi of Klassen et al. 1989]; E. soleae (Van Beneden & Hesse, 1864) Johnston, 1929 [syn. Phyllonella soleae Van Beneden & Hesse, 1864; Epibdella producta Linstow, 1903]; E. squamula (Heath, 1902) Johnston, 1929 [syn. Epidella (sic) squamula Heath, 1902; Entobdella hippoglossi of Klassen et al. 1989]; 3 new species described below. Species inquirendae: E. aegyptiacus Amer, 1990; E. rosaceus Crane, 1972 [syn. E. hippoglossi of Klassen et al. 1989]; E. steingroeveri (Cohn, 1916) Johnston, 1929 [syn. Epibdella steingroeveri Cohn, 1916; Entobdella hippoglossi of Klassen et al. 1989]; Entobdella sp. on 'righteye flounder' (identity of fish uncertain) at Sydney Inlet, British Columbia (Hoskins et al. 1976). Comments. The diagnosis of Entobdella was emended by Kearn & Whittington (2005). Detailed reasons for the changes in species composition of Entobdella were provided earlier. Impetus for this study came from the investigation by Kearn & Whittington (2005) in which former Entobdella species from elasmobranch rays were transferred to Neoentobdella. During this investigation it became apparent that the various synonymies proposed by Klassen et al. (1989) were in need of reassessment. Entobdella brattstroemi Brinkmann 1952
Entobdella brattstroemi Brinkmann, 1952 (Figs. 15H, 35) Type host and locality: Fine flounder, Paralichthys adspersus (Steindachner, 1867) (Pleuronectiformes: Paralichthyidae); Pacific Ocean, off coast of Chile, Golfo de Ancud, N of Isla Abtoa, 41°47'18" S, 73°20'55" W, depth 60 m (Brinkmann 1952a). Other locality: Coquimbo (approximately 29°57' S, 71°25' W), approximately 1300 km north of type locality. Specimens collected by Dr M. T. González (Entobdella sp. 2; Table 2). Site on host: Skin. Holotype: Adult specimen already designated by Brinkmann (1952a) (SMNH No.: LUCE type 3864; M107, 1 slide). Voucher specimens: 2 adult specimens (SAMA AHC No 29195, 2 slides) from P. adspersus off Coquimbo, Chile (Entobdella sp. 2: Table 2). Specimens studied: Holotype and voucher specimens listed above. In present study, based on holotype and 2 vouchers (see above): total length 4403 (3971 – 5191) (n = 3); body width 3335 (2873 – 4003) (n = 3); haptor length and breadth 2265 (2045 – 2587) and 2345 (2088 – 2797) respectively (n = 3); length of accessory sclerite 312 (282 – 355) (n = 5); length of anterior hamulus 877 (698 – 963) (n = 5); length of posterior hamulus 146 (121 – 170) (n = 4); pharynx length and width 428 (345 – 500) and 635 (478 – 738) respectively (n = 3); testis length and width 286 (250 – 331) and 536 (506 – 563) respectively (n = 3). Accessory sclerites stout with strongly developed and characteristically shaped flanges along inner and outer borders of curved distal third (Figs. 15H, 35B). Outer flange wider than inner flange. Differential diagnosis: Distinguished from other Entobdella spp. by characteristic shape of accessory sclerites (Figs. 15H, 35B). On skin of Paralichthys adspersus. Comments. The holotype of E. brattstroemi is in a poor condition – in particular the shapes of the accessory sclerites are hard to resolve. The 2 specimens donated by Dr González (Entobdella sp. 2; Table 2) are in good condition and are lodged as vouchers at the SAMA (see above). The type locality is approximately 1300 km south of Coquimbo where Dr González collected her specimens. Entobdella pugetensis Robinson 1961
<i>Entobdella pugetensis</i> Robinson, 1961 <p>(Fig. 26)</p> <p> There is a record by Beverley-Burton (1984) of this species on the skin of <i>Atheresthes stomias</i> (Jordan & Gilbert, 1880) (Pleuronectiformes: Pleuronectidae) but other records and the specimens examined in our study (Table 2) are from gills. Robinson’s (1961) account of this relatively small parasite (body length quoted: 1.9 – 4.34 mm) is based on 9 specimens. We found that tendons associated with the accessory sclerites attach to the anterior (proximal) end of the anterior hamulus (Fig. 26A). Subdivision of the anterolateral adhesive pads into 3 separate areas, an arrangement illustrated and described by Robinson (1961) and confirmed by us (Fig. 26A), provides a link with skin-parasitic <i>Entobdella</i> spp. However, 3 significant features set <i>E. pugetensis</i> aside from its skin-parasitic relatives. (1) The posterior (proximal) wall of the penis sac is exceptionally thick and probably muscular. This wall becomes progressively thinner distally until, about halfway along the penis sac, it dwindles to a relatively thin sheath for the penis (Fig. 26A). (2) The vagina is relatively short and straight, 8 in diameter. Close to the ventral surface it flares, creating a relatively conspicuous funnel-shaped opening with a diameter of about 15 (Fig. 26A). The vaginal opening lies posterior to the excretory pore and just posterior to the ootype. Hence it occupies a much more posterior location than in any of the other entobdelline species in our study. Proximally the vagina approaches the vitelline reservoir, where it narrows abruptly, but a connection with the vitelline reservoir was not detected. No circular fibres surrounded the vaginal opening when viewed with bright field or phase contrast microscopy. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
