Does Downloading PowerPoint Slides Before the Lecture Lead to Better Student Achievement?: Reply
This reply responds to a comment by Cannon (2011) that opens the debate on consistency of the effect of downloading PowerPoint slides before lectures on students’ exam performance. Cannon (2011) points out potential endogeneity problems in Chen and Lin (2008) and attempts to explore the unconditional mean effect of downloading PowerPoint slides for the full sample. In this reply, we firstly argue that the estimates in our original article are consistent since the effect of interest is the “conditional†treatment effect but not the unconditional mean effect. We provide explanations for our rationale of estimating the “conditional†treatment effect. Secondly, we propose a modified downloading variable to replicate Cannon’s analysis. Our results suggest that downloading PowerPoint slides before the exam does not produce a significant effect on absent students’ exam performance which is different from the results in Cannon (2011). Our analysis does support Cannon’s argument that students fixed effects are different across different attendance status.

As external pressure is applied to a pack of disordered particles, the system will be condensed into an amorphous jammed state possessing excess low-frequency vibrations and liquid-like mechanical responses, where the shear modulus (G) vanishes and the bulk modulus (K) holds a finite value. The criterion to judge whether such an ensemble of particles can be regarded as a continuous medium is still ambiguous due to the complexity of the system brought up by the non-affinity describing to what extent the internal particles tend to slide away from each other. In this article, by building the 2D packing derived networks, a ’liquid-solid’ transition governed by networks’ graph topology is investigated. This transition sheds a light on designing mechanical metamaterials, which permits one to separately tune its moduli or fix the Poisson ratio as well as enhance its stiffness. Our work reveals a more comprehensive understanding of how topological factors take effects on mechanical responses of randomly packing derived networks and provide more freedom in experimentally constructing tunable mechanical metamaterials.On the other hand, deformed Kagome lattices which perform fancy topological properties, are characterized by its polarization. This polarization can be calculated from its unit cell’s geometry. Domain wall between two kinds of polarization lattices can be either self-stress state or soft mode. Self-stress states, in which net force is zero with nonzero structural elements forces play an important role in load-bearing ability of ideal central-force networks’ structures and network consisting of real materials with bending forces. Soft mode demonstrated as a deformation of the structure with zero elements forces is a zero-frequency vibrational mode with zero vibrational energy.
