Energy transfers in small-scale and large-scale dynamos

    No full text
We study energy transfers during magnetic energy growth in small-scale and large-scale dynamos. We perform direct numerical simulations for magnetic Prandtl number Pm =20 and 0.2 in a periodic box on 1024^3 grid. Energy fluxes and shell-to-shell energy transfers indicate that in small-scale dynamo for Pm =20, the magnetic energy growth takes place due to a non-local energy transfer from large-scale velocity field to small-scale magnetic field. On the other hand, in large-scale dynamo for Pm =0.2, local energy transfers from large-scale velocity field to large-scale magnetic field takes place

Learning from biophysical heterogeneity: inductive use of case studies for maize cropping systems in Central America

    No full text
Global society has become conscious that efforts towards securing food production will only be successful if agricultural production increases are obtained through mechanisms that ensure active regeneration of the natural resource base. Production options should be targeted in the sense of that their suitability to improve agricultural production and maintain natural resources is evaluated prior to their introduction. Biophysical targeting evaluates production options as a function of the spatial and temporal variability of climate conditions, in interaction with soil, crop characteristics and agronomic management strategies. This thesis contributes to the development of a system-based methodology for biophysical targeting. Cropping system simulation and weather generator tools are interfaced to geographical information systems. Inductive use of two case studies - a green manure cover crop and reduced tillage with residue management - helped to develop the methodology. Insight is gained into the regional potential for and the soil and climate conditions under which successful introduction of these production options may be achieved. The resulting information supports regional stakeholders involved in agriculture in their analysis and discussion, negotiation and decision-making concerning where to implement production systems. This process can improve the supply of appropriate agricultural production practices that enhance production and conserve soil and water resources

Population differences in immune responses to Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccination in infancy.

    No full text
Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination induces a marked increase in the interferon (IFN)-gamma response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis purified protein derivative (Mtb PPD) in UK adolescents, but not in Malawian adolescents. We hypothesized that Mtb PPD-induced IFN-gamma after BCG vaccination would be similar in infants from these 2 countries. Infants were vaccinated with BCG during the first 3-13 weeks of life. Three months after BCG vaccination, 51 (100%) of 51 UK infants had an IFN-gamma response to Mtb PPD, compared to 41 (53%) of 78 of Malawian infants, in whom responses varied according to their season of birth. We conclude that population differences in immune responses after BCG vaccination are observed among infants, as well as among young adults

Synchronization Methods for Wavelet Packet Multicarrier Modulation

    No full text
Wavelet Packet based Multi-Carrier Modulation (WPM) offers an alternative to the well-established Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) as an efficient multicarrier modulation technique. It has strong advantage of being generic transmission scheme whose actual characteristics can be widely customized to fulfill several requirements and constraints of advanced communication systems. In the last decades wavelets have been favorably applied in signal and image processing fields but they just recently attracted attention of the telecommunication community. Therefore, some research questions remain to be addressed before novel WPM can be used in practice. One of the major concerns involves the performance of WPM transceivers under various synchronization errors. In this thesis we analyze the interference in WPM transmission caused by the carrier frequency offset and time synchronization errors. Using standard wavelets, the sensitivity of WPM transceivers to these errors is evaluated through simulation studies and their performances are compared and contrasted to OFDM. To alleviate the WPM‘s vulnerability to time synchronization errors, a method of synchronization is proposed. The proposed time synchronization method in WPM is based on already published feed-forward decision-directed approach which uses correlation method in the wavelet domain (after processed by the analysis filter bank in the receiver side), with lower implementation complexity and improved stability. The proposed method can be considered as “coarse” time synchronization, suitable for estimating large time offset but with less precision. Through computer simulations the performance of the proposed method is proven and further its performance is compared for different parameters of wavelet filters.TelecommunicationsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Design thinking for repurposing used packaging timber

    No full text
Timber and wood based materials like plywood have been used for packaging from a long time. As a normal practice the used packaging timber in India is used for repacking, as firewood and low-end interior decoration purpose. Sustainable eco-efficient repurposing of used packaging timber forms the basis for \u84DESIGN THINKING FOR RE-PURPOSING USED PACKAGING TIMBER?. Used packaging timber from industries and warehouses is obtained by scrap dealers and sorted according to material, size, quality and quantity. The scrap dealers remove nails and screws and the material is sold in retail by weight to the user. Design Circle, Bangalore, India have been re-purposing used packaging timber and plywood from 2004 onwards. The packaging timber from scrap dealers is processed further to suit different product categories like toys, educational products, lifestyle accessories, physiotherapy products, play and furniture using regular woodworking techniques. Value addition to the material is done by glue lamination transforming the packaging timber into solid timber sections with expensive feel and look. The constrained availability of the raw material calls for design of low quantity and high quality production. The paper presents product examples for different sections of the pyramid, designed and executed at design circle, Bangalore. The paper points the constraints, fresh avenues, sustainable practices in raw material procurement and in product design. The paper emphasizes the importance of re-purposing of a renewable, sustainable, material like timber after serving its originally intended purpose

    Morvan syndrome following B-cell lymphoma

    No full text
Morvan syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease named after the French physician Augustin Marie Morvan. It is characterized by multiple, irregular contractions of the long muscles, weakness, pruritus, hyperhidrosis, insomnia, and delirium. Here, we describe a 17-year-old young man, previously diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, who presented with multiple asynchronous fasciculations of the long muscles of his lower extremities accompanied by numbness. The patient responded initially to pulse corticosteroids with diminution of the fasciculations. He achieved complete remission following 7 consecutive, monthly intravenous immunoglobulin injections. The present case is described in the context of the available literature. © The Author(s) 2010.Barber PA, 2000, NEUROLOGY, V54, P771; FISCHERP.C, 1974, REV NEUROL, V130, P111; GIL R, 1984, REV NEUROL, V140, P728; HALBACH M, 1987, J NEUROL, V234, P433, DOI 10.1007-BF00314093; HAUG BA, 1989, CLIN NEUROL NEUROSUR, V91, P53, DOI 10.1016-S0303-8467(89)80008-3; IWASAKI Y, 1990, EUR ARCH PSY CLIN N, V239, P335, DOI 10.1007-BF01735061; Josephs KA, 2004, J CLIN NEUROPHYSIOL, V21, P440, DOI 10.1097-00004691-200411000-00008; Kimura J., 1989, ELECTRODIAGNOSIS DIS; Lee EK, 1998, J NEUROL NEUROSUR PS, V65, P857, DOI 10.1136-jnnp.65.6.857; Liguori R, 2001, BRAIN, V124, P2417, DOI 10.1093-brain-124.12.2417; Madrid A, 1996, J NEUROL, V243, P350, DOI 10.1007-BF00868410; Morvan A., 1890, GAZ HEBD MED CHIR, V27, P173; VERNAY D, 1986, ARTHRITIS RHEUM, V29, P1413, DOI 10.1002-art.17802911190
