Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena on syventää Miina Sillanpään Säätiön ymmärrystä heidän tuottamastaan Kunnon kaveri -hankkeen liikunnallisen ryhmätoiminnan merkityksestä ikäihmiselle. Kunnon kaveri –hanke kokemuksia lähellä tapahtuvasta ryhmätoiminnasta toteutettiin laadullisin menetelmin. Teoreettisessa viitekehyksessä rakensimme opinnäytetyön tietoperustan kolmen teeman ympärille: monipuolisiin aktiviteetteihin, kotona asumisen tukemiseen itsenäisen elämän näkökulmasta ja lähitoiminnan merkityksestä hyvinvointiin. Tutkimuskysymyksemme on ”Millaisia kokemuksia osallistujilla on Kunnon kaveri –toiminnasta?” As the number of older people grows, it is increasingly important to focus on their wellbeing and support for independent living. Physical activity and preventive action are key factors in improving the quality of life and health of older people. The aim of this thesis is to deepen the understanding of Miina Sillanpää Foundation about the importance of physical group activities for older people, produced by their project Kunnon Kaveri. Kunnon Kaveri project experiences of local group activities, was conducted using qualitative methods. Our aim was to gather more in-depth information about the experiences of people who participated in the group activities and their meaning for older people. The data was collected with five thematic individual interviews. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using the content analysis method. Our research question tried to establish what the participants experiences of the Kunnon Kaveri activities were. The interwiew data consisted of experiences and meanings related to Kunnon Kaveri activities. The data was divided into subcategories based on the themes of the experiences, from which we formed eight categories and finally divided them into three main categories. The main categories of the data are mental well-being, the perceived importance of exercise for the elderly and experience of local activities. In addition to the main categories, development suggestions related to the activities emerged in the interviews. The results showed that the participants had found new resources through the group activities and that accessible local activities and group-based hobby opportunities can improve the quality of life of the elderly

Parched Kaveri: A preliminary assessment of flow alteration and ecological condition of sub-basins of Kaveri river using global datasets

Freshwater biodiversity is in a state of crisis with an annual decline rate of 3.9% compared to 1.1% decline in terrestrial biodiversity (Living Planet Index). The actual decline rate may be higher than estimated as many of the species are data deficient or not yet assessed or became extinct before assessment. We have far surpassed the sustainable or natural limit of reductions in populations of freshwater species. With an unprecedented increase in global energy and water demand, planetaries boundaries for sustainable use of freshwater may be overstepped in the near future, as presently visible at a local scale. A staggering decline in freshwater biodiversity is a first warning signal of a looming global water crisis. With continued pressures like river fragmentation, flow regulation, overextraction of surface or groundwater, pollution, invasive species and climate change, on freshwater habitats, this crisis may shift one level higher and impact human species severely. Environmental flows forms the link between ecological health of a river and the ecosystem services we derive from it. It can be a great tool to achieve twin objective of maintaining the ecosystem integrity of freshwater habitats and deciding trade-offs for ensuring sustainable water management in a river basin. This study focuses on developing a holistic methodology for preliminary assessment of ecosystem integrity or ecological health of a river basin, which can be easily adapted to other river basins using open source global datasets. The proposed methodology was applied to Kaveri basin to test its applicability and identify the limitations of available global datasets. A widely accepted regional environmental flow assessment framework, ELOHA (Ecological Limits of Hydrological Alteration) was adapted by using global datasets. A global river classification dataset was used to identify the river classes in Kaveri basin. Monthly hydrological alteration in magnitude at the location of gauge stations was calculated, using PCR-GLOBWB data as reference for natural flow conditions, in absence of records for natural flow in a highly modified Kaveri basin. An ecosystem integrity indicator framework was developed to assess the hydrologic, geomorphic and ecological modifications in the river basin. Indicators grouped under four main categories - Connectivity status, Land Use, Biodiversity, Water Quality were adopted using exiting global datasets and values for all the sub-basins of Kaveri basin were estimated. Finally an attempt to derive flow alteration-ecological response was made. Threatened fish species percentage, quantified using IUCN spatial dataset, showed an increase in value with increase in alteration in flow magnitude. No clear relationship was observed when data for other taxonomic groups like plants, molluscs, odonata, shrimps and crabs were used. Hence, species of concern (IUCN red list category - CR, EN,VU) data can be useful in deriving preliminary flow alteration-ecological response relationship. An attempt to find linkage between flow alteration and floodplain gross primary productivity was also made. In dry season an inverse relationship was observed at few gauge stations but in general other climatic factors like rainfall and evapotranspiration had greater influence on gross primary productivity. Impact on gross primary productivity due to flow alteration could not be isolated using existing datasets because of coarse resolution.Civil Engineering | Environmental Engineerin

‘Women are supposed to endure that!’ A critical feminist exploration of obstetric violence in women’s and midwives’ birth narratives in India

Birth and violence against women are sensitive areas of research surrounded by a thick cultural silence. Women around the world experience different forms of obstetric violence during childbirth in a variety of settings by providers and support workers within health care systems. While there is evidence of obstetric violence as a global issue, more systematic exploration is needed on its causes from the perspectives of women and their carers. Obstetric violence is closely linked with issues of women’s positioning at the intersections of different forms of oppression and their experiences and perceptions of obstetric violence can be influenced by socio-cultural, demographic and economic characteristics, their immediate contexts, their reproductive histories and geographies. In this thesis, I apply a feminist perspective to explore the nature of obstetric violence and the factors that makes women vulnerable during childbirth, considering that women’s and nurse-midwives’ perspectives and experiences. I first conduct a quantitative examination of the determinants of obstetric violence in one of the economically deprived states of Bihar in India, and find women’s experiences of obstetric violence are often plural and multi-layered. Age, parity and education are found statistically significant attributes that increase women’s vulnerability to obstetric violence in Bihar. I follow this with a qualitative exploration through participatory arts-based methods to cut across the power-based and language-based barriers and learn from and present women’s embodied experiences of childbirth and obstetric violence. I used feminist methods such as birth mapping, birthing story, poetic inquiry, feminist-relational discourse analysis and voice-centered relational analysis for data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation, to bring forth women’s and nurse-midwives’ voices on this sensitive embodied issue. My research indicates that the determinants driving obstetric violence are related to women and their nurse-midwives, at the individual level, in their immediate birthing environment and in the larger social and policy level. Gender, power, culture and structure are the key themes holding the individual and the interactions of the determinants leading to obstetric violence. They need to be addressed at each of these levels through multi-sectoral approaches with women and their midwives as key stakeholders driving the change towards ensuring respectful maternity care
