    Designing effective animated icons for children

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Information Technology is an essential part of the National Curriculum in the UK, yet despite the growth of IT in schools that this has generated, there is evidence that children are not to be taken into consideration enough when designing aspects of educational software. The functionality available in education software packages tends to be made available through static icons, yet there are problems with their implementation as they can at times cause confusion for the user in terms of the functionality that they are aiming to represent. In order to make icons in educational software more effective, and to meet the needs of children, of the use of animated icons has been suggested. Animating the function of the icon aims to provide a clarification of its meaning and demonstrate its capabilities, as well as explaining to the user the method of use. However, there is little information available on how to support the design of effective animated icons. Focusing on a target age group of 11 to 12 year olds, this thesis argues that some form of support mechanism should be developed for the design of animated icons to ensure that consideration is being given to the types of object that children find useful and accessible. A set of dimensions where guidance on visual aspects of the icon may be useful are developed through analysis of relevant literature and it is highlighted that they do not provide any insight into what types of object may be helpful in designing the animated icons. This thesis then argues that animated icon design can be usefully informed by psychological theories of learning and that using such theories as a base may provide an understanding of how children identify icon functionality. The thesis introduces and critiques Piaget’s Genetic Epistemology theory, Vygotsky’s Sociocultural theory and Leontjev’s Activity Theory, identifying aspects of the theories which may be of relevance to the design of animated icons. By investigating the relationships between the dimensions of animated icons and the concepts from the theories of learning, insights are developed into the impact of visual factors on a child’s identification and understanding of icon functionality. The thesis goes on to report a practical study where the sample is a group of 11 to 12 year old children. The practical study consists of three phases. The first phase gathers data related to the children’s familiarity with computers and the types of software packages that they use. The second phase looks at their use and recognition of static icon functionality. The last phase involves using the findings from phases 1 and 2 to create and evaluate a set of animated icons, the development of which is based on the relationships between the concepts from theories of learning and the identified dimensions of animated icons. The analysis of the evidence from the practical study leads to a small set of design principles being proposed that are aimed to provide advice/guidance on how to design animated icons effectively for this target age group, with an emphasis on the types of object that might be used. The principles are underpinned by the concepts from the theories of learning and presented in a manner that aims to be understandable by, and accessible to, designers

    ABSTRAK Telah dilakukan penelitian pengembangan buku saku digital berbasis kearifan lokal kabupaten Kaur pada mata pelajaran biologi . Media pembelajaran Biologi di MAN Kaur pada materi ekosistem berupa buku paket dan LKS belum terdapat media pembelajaran digital yang mendukung pembelajaran mengaitkan dengan kehidupan nyata dan alam sekitar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui cara pengembangan buku saku digital berbasis kearifan lokal kabupaten Kaur pada materi biologi, mengetahui kelayakan buku saku digital berbasis kearifan lokal kabupaten Kaur pada materi biologi, mengetahui respon pendidik dan peserta didik terhadap buku saku digital berbasis kearifan lokal kabupaten Kaur pada materi biologi. Penelitian ini telah dilakukan di MAN Kaur, kecamatan kaur selatan, kabupaten Kaur, Bengkulu. Jenis penelitian R&D (research and development) metode pengembangan dari Borg and Gall dengan 7 tahapan yang sudah disederhanakan. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah angket para ahli (media, materi, bahasa, dan budaya), angket tanggapan (pendidik dan peserta didik), dan dokumentasi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian kelayakan buku saku digital berbasis kearifan lokal kabupaten Kaur pada mata pelajaran biologi mendapatkan presentase rata-rata validator ahli media sebesar 88%, ahli materi 88%, ahli bahasa 89%, dan ahli budaya sebesar 91% sehingga memiliki kriteria “sangat layak”. Sedangkan untuk respon pendidik sebesar 90% dan respon peserta didik sebesar 89% dengan kriteria “sangat baik”. Berdasarkan penilaian oleh ahli media, materi, bahasa, ahli budaya dan respon pendidik dan peserta didik maka disimpulkan bahwa media buku saku digital berbasis kearifan lokal kabupaten Kaur pada mata pelajaran biologi sangat layak dan menarik digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran . Biology learning media at MAN Kaur on ecosystem material in the form of textbooks and worksheets, there is no electronic learning media that supports learning to relate to real life and the natural environment. This research aims to find out how to develop a digital pocket book based on Kaur district's local wisdom on biology material, find out the feasibility of a digital pocket book based on Kaur district's local wisdom on biology material, find out the response of educators and students to the digital pocket book based on Kaur district's local wisdom on material biology. This research was conducted in MAN Kaur, South Kaur subdistrict, Kaur district, Bengkulu. Type of research R&D (research and development) development method from Borg and Gall with 7 simplified stages. This research uses expert questionnaire research instruments (media, materials, language and culture), response questionnaires (educators and students), and documentation. Based on the results of research on the feasibility of a digital pocket book based on local wisdom, Kaur District in biology subjects received an average percentage of media expert validators of 88%, material experts 88%, language experts 89%, and cultural experts 91% so that it has the criteria "very feasible ”. Meanwhile, the teacher response was 90% and the student response was 89% with the criteria "very good". Based on assessments by media, material, language, cultural experts and responses from educators and students, it was concluded that the digital pocket book media based on local wisdom in Kaur district in biology subjects was very suitable and interesting to use as a learning medium.     M.Sc (Mathematics and Computing) Thesis.The present dissertation entitled, “A Study of New Topologies on R” comprises certain investigations carried out by me at School of Mathematics, Thapar University, Patiala, under the supervision of Dr. Jatinderdeep Kaur, Assistant Professor, School of Mathematics, Thapar University, Patiala. The aim of this work is to find new topologies with this new set of basis B− and B+. The topologies generated from this new set of basis are different from standard, lower limit, upper limit and k-topologies. We compared well known topologies with new topologies on R. The whole work is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 is introduction which includes brief account of definitions and their examples which will be required for the later chapters. In chapter 2, we have studied some main theorems which guarantees how topology can be generated from given base and vice-versa. The aim of chapter 3 is to study well known topologies on R and their topological properties. In chapter 4, we introduced new topologies on real line and compared them with well known topologies on R. At the end of this dissertation, we have bibliography of research papers and books cited in the dissertation

    Sapi Kaur merupakan sapi lokal yang ada di Kabupaten Kaur dan keberadaannya tersebar di 15 Kecamatan, salah satunya di Kecamatan Padang Guci Hulu Kabupaten Kaur. Sapi Kaur hidup dan berkembang biak di daerah Kecamatan Padang Guci Hulu Kabupaten Kaur dan umumnya dimiliki oleh petani pedesaan sejak dahulu hingga sekarang. Sapi kaur memiliki bentuk badan yang kecil, padat, dan kompak dengan pundak pada jantan berpunuk, sedangkan pada betina tidak memiliki punuk namun bagian pundaknya tidak rata sedikit menonjol dibanding sapi Bali betina. Sapi kaur memiliki warna yang bervariasi yaitu putih, abu-abu, bahkan ditemukan pula warna bulu merah bata dan hitam. Sapi ini termasuk tipe sapi potong berukuran kecil namun memiliki kontribusi yang cukup besar bagi pemenuhan kebutuhan daging dan sebagai penghasilan tambahan bagi para peternak di daerah tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui besarnya usaha peternakan sapi Kaur yang dipelihara secara ekstensif di kecamatan Padang Guci Hulu Kabupaten Kaur. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan pada bulan Oktober-November 2019. Responden dari penelitian ini adalah 30 orang peternak sapi Bali yang memiliki skala kecil yaitu 1-5 ekor sebanyak 10 responden, skala sedang 6-10 ekor sebanyak 10 responden, dan skala besar 11-23 ekor sebanyak 10 responden. Variabel yang diamati pada penelitian ini meliputi biaya tetap, biaya variabel, biaya produksi, penerimaan, pendapatan, BEP (Break Even Point), dan R/C. Data yang diperoleh dari hasil penelitian ditabulasi dalam bentuk tabel dan diolah secara matematis kemudian dianalisis secara deskriptif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang telah di lakukan di Kecamatan Padang Guci Hulu Kabupaten Kaur dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa rata-rata pendapatan peternak sapi Kaur pada berbagai skala kepemilikan yaitu pada skala 1-5 ekor rata-rata pendapatan per tahun adalah sebesar Rp 6.039.130, pada skala kepemlikan 6-10 ekor rata-rata pendapatannya adalah sebesar Rp 17.139.662 per tahun, dan pada skala kepemilikan 11-23 ekor rata�ratanya adalah sebesar Rp 44.616.184 per tahun. Berdasarkan BEP capaian titik impas produksi pada skala kepemilikan 1-5 ekor adalah 0,425 ekor dengan harga yang harus dicapai sebesar Rp 4.698.336, pada skala kepemilikan 6-10 capaian titik impas produksi yaitu 0,428ekor dengan harga yang harus dicapai sebesar Rp Rp 4.698.525, pada skala kepemilikan 11-23 ekor capaian tititk impas produksi yaitu 0,554 ekor dengan harga yang harus dicapai sebesar Rp 6.089.205. Dan Berdasarkan R/C secara keseluruhan usaha ternak sapi Kaur yang dilakukan oleh peternak cukup menguntungkan melihat R/C yang berada diatas 1, yang mana pada skala kepemilikan 1-5 ekor yaitu 1.500, pada skala kepemilikan 6-10 ekor yaitu 1.995, dan pada skala kepemilikan 11-23 ekor yaitu sebesar 2.717

    Laser-induced forward transfer techniques for printing functional materials and photonic devices

    The subject of this thesis is to study the Laser-Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT) technique using a time-resolved method in order to gain a better insight into the dynamics of the transfer process and to use the technique for rapid prototyping of photonic devices and printing piezoelectric materials for energy harvesting applications. A nanosecond shadowgraphy technique was used to study the triazene polymer (TP)-dynamic release layer (DRL) assisted LIFT technique for solid-phase ceramic materials namely gadolinium gallium oxide (Gd-Ga-O) and ytterbium doped yttrium aluminium oxide (Yb:YAG). The dependence of the distance travelled by the shockwave and the ejected donor material, their velocities and the quality of the ejected donor pixel on the laser fluence, the thickness of the TP-DRL and donor film thickness was studied and is discussed. Segmented channel waveguides, X-couplers and mode-filters based on titanium (Ti) indiffused lithium niobate (LN) have been fabricated using the LIFT technique. The segment separation was found to be the key factor in determining mode profiles of waveguides. The corrugations due to the segmented nature of the deposits was observed to introduce non-adiabatic behavior in the mode filters which was further confirmed by theoretical modeling. Forward transfer of donor films with patterns to be transferred machined into them prior to LIFT have been investigated. This technique allows debris-free printing of thicker and fragile donors films with extremely smooth and uniform edges in intact and solid-phase without the need of any sacrificial layer. Results of debris-free printing of micro-pellets of zinc oxide (ZnO) with extremely good quality edges from donor films pre-machined using focused ion beam (FIB) are presented. Printing and post-transfer characterization of both lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and non-lead based ZnO piezoelectric materials for energy harvesting applications using the LIFT and TP-DRL assisted LIFT techniques have been studied and discussed

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Perceived Parental Encouragement and Self-Concept in Relation to Adjustment in Adolescents

    Parental encouragement, self concept and adjustment are important aspects of adolescent are life and are related with each other. Present study researched up on the contribution of parental encouragement and self concept towards the adjustment of adolescents. 184 adolescents in the age range of 16 to 18 were tested on Parental Encouragement Scale, Adjustment Inventory, and the Self disclosure scale. Analysis of the result revealed that parental encouragement is related to emotional adjustment (r= -.29**, p < 0.01) and have a positive correlation with overall self concept of the adolescents (r=.26**, p < 0.01). Self- Concept was found to have a negative correlation with overall adjustment ( r= -.36**, p < 0.01) with emotional adjustment (r= -.35**, p < 0.01) with social adjustment problems ( r=-.28**, p < 0.01) and educational adjustment problems (r-.16*=p < 0.05). The self concept is negatively related to adjustment because higher score indicates adjustment problems, thus the correlation is negative. Adolescent with Low self concept had more difficulties with adjustment than those who had high self concept. Similarly adolescent who perceived low parental encouragement had adjustment problems
