    No full text
Parental encouragement, self concept and adjustment are important aspects of adolescent are life and are related with each other. Present study researched up on the contribution of parental encouragement and self concept towards the adjustment of adolescents. 184 adolescents in the age range of 16 to 18 were tested on Parental Encouragement Scale, Adjustment Inventory, and the Self disclosure scale. Analysis of the result revealed that parental encouragement is related to emotional adjustment (r= -.29**, p < 0.01) and have a positive correlation with overall self concept of the adolescents (r=.26**, p < 0.01). Self- Concept was found to have a negative correlation with overall adjustment ( r= -.36**, p < 0.01) with emotional adjustment (r= -.35**, p < 0.01) with social adjustment problems ( r=-.28**, p < 0.01) and educational adjustment problems (r-.16*=p < 0.05). The self concept is negatively related to adjustment because higher score indicates adjustment problems, thus the correlation is negative. Adolescent with Low self concept had more difficulties with adjustment than those who had high self concept. Similarly adolescent who perceived low parental encouragement had adjustment problems

Anxiety, Desperation, Coping Strategies and Self- Efficacy as Predictors of Superstitious Behavior

Every country, region, religion, and even an individual household has its own set of superstitions. Superstitions can even vary from person to person. Sometimes superstitions can have a comforting consequence, which can relieve anxiety about the unknown and provide people the feeling of control over their lives. This may be the ground as to why superstitions are into existence for so long — as they have been passed on from generation to generation. The same goes for desperation. Desperation makes people weak, and it leads to rash decisions. Everyone copes in their own way with the stressors, and the coping strategies also differ from person to person. So, through this research, efforts were made to find if anxiety and desperation encourage superstitious behavior in people and if there is any relation between coping strategies, self-efficacy, and superstition. For the study, eight hypotheses were formed. A total of 194 adults were used for the research through the purposive sampling. We found that anxiety and desperation are positively related to the superstitious behavior and emotion-focused and avoidant coping was also positively associated with superstition

Every living human being has one or more than one stereotype attached to the group or community to which they belong. Some stereotypes are an asset for groups because they make them more confident about themselves and some are liability because they make the individuals to lose confidence in themselves. The present investigation was conducted to examine the effect of stereotype threat. “Students belonging or living in the villages are perceived to be poor in English language. It was hypothesized that stereotype threat will have the significant effect on the performance of village students as compared to the city. In order to verify the above hypothesis a sample of 120 students, 60 students belonging to a village and the other 60 students belonging to the city were studied. To measure the effect of stereotype Two Way ANOVA was calculated. According to the results Stereotype Threat impaired the performance of Students belong to the village as compared to students in no threat condition

thesisThe effects of “prevailing emotions and recognition of facial expressions in the virtual stimuli” was investigated using three scales emotional sensitivity self assessment scale which consisted of 20 items, Danva 2 test which consisted of 24 pictures of happy, sad, fearful and angry emotion and PANAS-GEN scale which consisted of 20 items, ten items projecting negative affect and ten items projecting positive effect. The results on all the three scales were compared and gender differences were found. Also, differences were found in positive and negative emotions with intensity. The total sample taken was 122 subjects (61 males and 61 females) in the age range of 18-25 years. The study found that females of the present age-group were more sensitive to emotionality than males. They were also found to be better at recognizing emotions in the facial expressions more accurately. However, judging the intensity of facial emotions did not show any differences between the males and females. This study explains the relationship between emotional sensitivity, positive emotions and negative emotions, happiness, sadness, fearfulness anger and judging the emotional intensity accurately. The correlations have been found to be significant at P<0.5 and P<0.01 level. The study could be implicated as a great tool of investigation in the fields of forensic psychology, investigating agencies, marketing, and advertising

The aim of the study was to find out relationship between the perceived parental style of rearing, self-concept and self-esteem and to find out the best predictors of self-esteem among the parental style of rearing and self-concept.150 adolescents in the age range of 13 to 18 were tested on, Self-Disclosure Form, Parental perception questionnaire and State self-esteem. Analysis of the result revealed that parental perception of rearing style showed low correlation with self-concept. The results revealed that parental style of rearing has no significant correlation with self-concept. All the attributes of self-concept except physical appearance have a positive correlation with self-esteem significant at p<0.01 level and popularity significant at p<0.05.The results revealed that Mother’s style of rearing whether ‘Responsive style’ or ‘dominating style’ both have positive correlation with selfesteem. ‘Responsive style ‘having correlation of (r = .19*, p< .05) and similarly demanding style of rearing by the mother has positive correlation with self-esteem r = (.22*, p< .01).Adolescent with Low self-concept had more difficulties with adjustment than the high self-concept. Similarly adolescent who perceived low parental perception had low selfesteem

ABSTRACT The study was conducted to investigate the relationship on self-esteem, anxiety, locus of control and academic performance among university students. The sample consisted of 120 students (60 males and 60 females). Pearson correlation and t-test were used to analyze the data. The results of the study revealed that there exists a positive relation between self-esteem and academic performance (r=0.78). Negative correlation was found between anxiety (State/Trait) and academic performance (r=-0.41;r=-0.56). No significant relation was found between locus of control and academic performance (r=0.08). Gender differences were found on self-esteem and anxiety but no differences in gender were found for locus of control and academic performance. Keywords: Self-esteem; State Anxiety; Trait Anxiety; Locus of Control; Academic Performance

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
