    Research Question: How much is the cost borne out by the family for treatment of fatal diarrhoea in rural settings? Objective: To assess the money spent in the treatment of fatal diarrhoea in under fives. Study design: Cross- sectional. Settings: Rural areas. Sample size: 95 under five deaths amongst 2094 under five children. Participants: Parents of deceased children. Study variables: Causes of deaths, type of treatment facility, cost treatment. Analysis: Simple proportions. Results: It was observed that the cost of treatment of fatal diarrhoea went up when the physicians were changed frequently during the course of treatment and also when a practitioner from outside village was consulted

    Function Spaces and Weak Formulation of Partial Differential Equations

    Functional analysis plays an increasing role in the applied sciences and mathematics. It is an abstract branch of mathematics that is developed from classical analysis. Proper functional analytic setting is important for the study of initial and boundary value problems. It is also important for the construction of effective numerical schemes. With the discovery of distributions, the role of functional analysis in partial differential equations has become more important. Numerical methods like finite element and finite volume methods depend on the results of functional analysis both for the construction and error analysis of the schemes. The accuracy of several approximations to partial differential equations very much depends on the smoothness of the analytical solution to the equation under consideration. So, smoothness of data becomes very important in the analysis. For this motive, we will consider some classes of functions with some specific differentiability and integrability properties, called function spaces. Chapter 1 starts with an introduction to function spaces with examples and we define the different norms which are used in analysis of partial differential equations. In addition to this, we have included the different inequalities which will be used in forthcoming chapters. In Chapter 2, we discuss the theory of distributions and also discussed the need of distributions. Several properties like differentiability, measure as distribution and functions as distributions have discussed. The concept of weak derivatives and convolution of distributions have included. Finally, in Chapter 3, we study the Sobolev spaces and norm defined on theses spaces. Then we study some extension theorems, imbedding theorems, compactness theorems, and trace theory. Then motivation for weak solution and its existence and uniqueness through LaxMilgram Theorem. Some test examples have been studied for weak formulation from elliptic partial differential equations

    Numerical methods for solving the system of differential equations

    The numerical methods are very useful in estimating the approximate solutions of differential equation’s problems. Among such methods three methods namely Euler’s method, Modified Euler’s method and Runge-Kutta method are studied and are applied to the real life problems to have approximated solutions. Chapter-wise account of this thesis is as follows : Chapter 1 is preliminary in nature. This consists of the basic terminology regarding differential equations and it’s system along with real life examples. Secondly it deals with the origin and applications of differential equations. Chapter 2 deals with the study of numerical methods and their implementation in the problems of differential equations and system of differential equations. It consists of illustration of numerical methods along with examples. Chapter 3 consists of real life problems where differential equations play an important role and for those problems the numerical methods studied in chapter 2 are applied. Two problems naming Pricing policy of goods and R¨ossler system which involves higher order differential equation and system of differential equations respectively are taken. Numerical methods are applied to have approximate solutions. It also consists of matlab implementation for these problems

    Central myofibroma of the maxilla

    Myofibroma is a rare benign localized or generalized proliferation of myofibroblastic tissue occurring mostly in infants or children. In the oral region, most lesions occur in the mandible, lip, buccal mucosa, and tongue; however, the lesions arising in the maxilla are very rare. Myofibroma has an aggressive clinical presentation and is often treated aggressively because of an inappropriate diagnosis. A unique feature of central myofibroma of the jaws is the potential for teeth and other odontogenic structures to be involved by tumor. We report a case of myofibroma arising in the left side of the maxilla of a 12-year-old girl and describe the differential diagnosis from other spindle cell lesions of neural and smooth muscle origin. We treated the case using surgical excision under general anesthesia. Immunohistochemical staining was done for establishing the diagnosis since histopathological diagnosis with conventional staining could not distinguish myofibroma from spindle cell tumors

    Transforming Open Data to Linked Open Data: An Ontology Framework Based on New Zealand Case Study

    Open government initiatives are increasingly gaining momentum and are becoming a critical part of the democratic fabric of both developing and developed nations. The primary motivation behind the initiatives is to provide transparency to the general public and encourage wider data usage by not only government-employed professionals but also by the general public and data scientists. As part of open governance, governments around the globe are increasingly releasing governance-related data that was either classified or undisclosed before the open data initiative. However, the consumption of the data has been dearth largely due to the nature of the data being disparate and heterogeneous formats. This has given rise to a need for frameworks that would be able to transform this data into an easily consumable form and make it accessible to stakeholders as well as the general public. This thesis proposes the design, implementation, and usage of an approach driven by an ontology that captures the knowledge of a subset of data released by the New Zealand government as a part of the open data initiative. The proposed framework transforms open data into linked open data based on a novel ontology developed as part of this research. While open data is commonly available in huge quantities, it lacks quality, accuracy, consistency, and completeness. It can be challenging to find information from this data for analysis towards an objective. There are many rich open data repositories globally. However, they are challenging to understand and use, because the data can only be accessed with a complex set of key phrase search options. Even then, it might end up retrieving data that might be irrelevant and/or incomplete. To mitigate this, ontology-based search, which uses semantics rather than keywords, has been proven to be more effective in strengthening the quality of queries for searching for content from repositories. This thesis presents a novel framework for semantically linking and achieving disparate open datasets. The framework and end-to-end process are demonstrated using open datasets for agriculture, land, and rainfall sectors in New Zealand. The framework is used to generate ontologies, which are then populated using the data and stored in a knowledge base. We then demonstrate how the knowledge base can be used to extract valuable, rich information pertaining to an objective. We demonstrate how ontologies can be linked manually as well as semi-automatically. Manual linking requires domain experts, whereas semi-automatic linking reduces the overhead of the dependency on domain experts to manually link the concepts. The result of this approach is promising in terms of enhancing the quality of data and the efficiency of the search. An expert evaluation was conducted to demonstrate and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the ontology framework. The proposed framework was given to seven domain experts to access the knowledge base and do an end-to-end evaluation. The evaluators were asked to answer questions on five criteria: usability, reliability, correctness, usefulness, and effectiveness. A thematic review was then conducted for the collated feedback of domain experts using Nvivo. The results demonstrate the proposed scheme can effectively link open data by generating ontologies for disparate open data, which can then be used to supply useful information derived from a conflation of the original data sets

    Karyotypic architecture of Zygogramma bicolorata Pallister (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Chrysomelinae) from Kurukshetra, Haryana, India

    This study examined the chromosomal structure and behavior of Zygogramma bicolorata, a species belonging to the subfamily Chrysomelinae within the family Chrysomelidae. Traditional Giemsa staining was employed for morphological characterization, while C-banding was used to detect constitutive heterochromatin. Karyotype analysis revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 24 and a meioformula of 11AA + Xyp. Most chromosomes were either metacentric or submetacentric, whereas the Y chromosome was acrocentric. Within the subfamily Chrysomelinae, both increases and decreases in chromosome number were observed, likely resulting from centric fission and centric fusion events, respectively. But in genus Zygogramma only increase in chromosome number suggests the involvement of Robertsian centric fission in the generation of karyotypic diversity

    Seven plant species belonging to family Malvaceae were subjected to standard palynological studies in order to generate data for pollen characterization and identification of medicinally important mallows from Punjab, NW India. Pollen grains of this family are unique being porate and echinate having isolated spines. Pollen grains are either 3-porate, 6-7 porate or polypantoporate with oblate spheroidal shape and reticulate or semitectate reticulate exine. Based on various palynological parameters like the range in size, shape, aperture, exine thickness, ornamentation, etc. key to identification of presently studied taxa has been evolved.</jats:p
