    Distinct pseudogap and quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in the superconducting state of nearly optimally doped SmFeAsO0.8F0.2 single crystals

    We use femtosecond spectroscopy to investigate the quasiparticle relaxation and low-energy electronic structure in a nearly optimally doped pnictide superconductor with Tc=49.5K. Multiple relaxation processes are evident, with distinct superconducting state quasiparticle recombination dynamics exhibiting a T-dependent superconducting gap, and a clear "pseudogaplike" feature with an onset above 180 K indicating the existence of a temperature-independent gap of magnitude ΔPG=61±9meV above Tc. Both the superconducting and pseudogap components show saturation as a function of fluence with distinct saturation fluences 4 and 40μJ/cm2, respectively. © 2009 The American Physical Society

    42214 layered Fe-based superconductors: Anab initiostudy of their structural, magnetic, and electronic properties

    As a follow-up to the discovery of a new family of Fe-based superconductors, namely, the RE4Fe2As2Te1-xO4 (42214) (RE = Pr, Sm, and Gd), we present a detailed ab initio study of these compounds highlighting the role of rare-earth (RE) atoms, external pressure, and Te content on their physical properties. Modifications of the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of the pure (e.g., x = 0.0) 42214 compounds and their possible correlations with the observed superconducting properties are calculated and discussed. The careful analysis of the results obtained shows that (i) changing the RE atoms allows one to tune the internal pressure acting on the As height with respect to the Fe planes; (ii) similarly to other Fe pnictides, the 42214 pure compounds show an antiferromagnetic-stripe magnetic ground state phase joined by an orthorhombic distortion (not experimentally found yet); (iii) smaller RE atoms increase the magnetic instability of the compounds possibly favoring the onset of the superconducting state; (iv) external pressure induces the vanishing of the magnetic order with a transition to the tetragonal phase and can be a possible experimental route towards higher superconducting critical temperature (T-c); and (v) Te vacancies act on the structural parameters, changing the As height and affecting the stability of the magnetic phase

    Influence of Mg deficiency on crystal structure and superconducting properties in MgB2 single crystals

    The effects of high-temperature vacuum-annealing-induced Mg deficiency in MgB(2) single crystals grown under high pressure were investigated. As the annealing temperature was increased from 800 to 975 degrees C, the average Mg content in the MgB(2) crystals systematically decreased while T(c) remains essentially unchanged and the superconducting transition slightly broadens from similar to 0.55 to similar to 1.3 K. The reduction in the superconducting volume fraction was noticeable already after annealing at 875 degrees C. Samples annealed at 975 degrees C are partially decomposed and the Mg site occupancy is decreased to 0.92 from 0.98 in as-grown crystals. Annealing at 1000 C completely destroys superconductivity. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the main final product of decomposition is polycrystalline MgB(4) and thus the decomposition reaction of MgB(2) can be described as 2MgB(2)(s) --> MgB(4)(s) + Mg(g). First-principles calculations of the Mg(1-x)(V(Mg))(x)B(2) electronic structure, within the supercell approach, show a small downshift of the Fermi level. Holes induced by the vacancies go to both sigma and pi bands. These small modifications are not expected to influence T(c), in agreement with observations. The significant reduction in the superconducting volume fraction without noticeable T(c) reduction indicates the coexistence, within the same crystal, of superconductive and nonsuperconductive electronic phases, associated with regions poor and rich in Mg vacancies

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
